Sound commands for every sound updated for MoP  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)
Version: 5.2 (beta 2)
by: Bluspacecow, Eisa
Technically this isn't an addon. It's a zip that contains a text file that listd the /script commands to play almost any sound in game.

If it was in the MPQ files then there should be a /script command to play them. From 25 man raid bosses to the sound a Gnome Male makes when dying.

I've also included instructions on how to do this yourself if I ever drop off the face of the earth

Instructions for use

1) Unzip the zip file

2) Open up the large over 3 MB file whose file name begins with "WoWSoundsUpdatedTo" using Word, Wordpad, Notepad or any decent text editor. It's just a text file so anything that can read a text file should do.

3) Use Control-F ie the Find function to find what you need.

3) Copy that /script command with Control-C (copy)

4) Switch to the game

5) Press Enter to bring up a chat box

6) Control - V to Paste it in.

7) Press return. The sound should play

These script commands can also be used in Macros

Now before posting in the comments about looking for a sound please make the effort to find it first.

I'm not trying to be mean or rude it's just that I might not always have the time to find it for you. I might not even be able to login to the game to test that I've found the right sound for you as I could be answering posts at work. Try searching on the NPC name or alternatives of the NPC name. Don't be afraid to try ones you think it is. Once you've exhausted all reasonable avenues to find it yourself then post and I'm sure someone will be happy to help

I've spot checked a few but haven't tested every single /script command I've listed here. Let me know if some aren't working for you.

Bluspacecow's Favourites :
/script PlaySoundFile("Sound\\Creature\\NPCGhoul\\NPCGhoulVendor04.ogg")
/script PlaySoundFile("Sound\\Creature\\NPCGeist\\NPCGeistVendor04.ogg")

Eisa's Favourites :
/script PlaySoundFile("Sound\\Creature\\Anubrekhan\\Anu_Naxx_Taunt01.ogg")
/script PlaySoundFile("Sound\\Creature\\Loathstare\\Loa_Naxx_Aggro02.ogg")
/script PlaySoundFile("Sound\\Creature\\Moroes\\MoroesSlay03.ogg")
/script PlaySoundFile("Sound\\Creature\\Mortar Team\\MortarTeamReady1.ogg")
/script PlaySoundFile("Sound\\Creature\\Wolf Rider\\WolfRiderPissed3.ogg")
(and many many more)

Verissi - Perl script for adding windows compatiable carriage returns
Mordroth of Bladefist realm - alerting to me to the fact I'ld missed some 3.1 sounds ..Thanks bro!
Eisa - For helping with the 3.2 update and making the addon I couldn't . Go take a look at AudioX a new way of exploring wow sounds
Elsa - For continued support in getting the list correct and accurate.

From now on I will be doing full extracts of all the MPQ files for each patch with new sounds in it. I will then be filtering first on all known sound file extensions then on all the other file extensions I see.

If you can't find it under what you would expect it's because it's named differently to what you would expect.

v4.2.0 *Eisa's BETA* Built entirely from fresh "(Listfile)" extracts contained in World of Warcraft 4.2.0.14333 live MPQs. Adds 1,264 new sound paths (listed in WoWSoundsNewTo420.txt). Total number of sounds is now 35,626 (listed in WoWSoundsUpdatedTo420.txt).

WoWSoundsUpdatedTo430.txt).

v5.0.5 (beta 1) Blu's attempt at updating it again. Be kind :P

Built by extracting all sounds as well as extracting all the "(Listfile)" extracts contained in World of Warcraft 5.0.5.16135 live MPQs. Adds a phenomenal amount of new sounds - 11,804 !! Total number of sounds is now 48,902 (listed in WoWSoundsUpdatedTo505.txt) . enUS locale only , other locales to be done ASAP

v5.0.5 (beta 2) Missed out on saving the linefeeds in the correct format. Should be properly formatted for both Mac and Windows now

v5.1 (beta 1) Updated for patch 5.1 Another large update - Adds 1143 new sounds bringing Total sounds up to 50,045

v5.1 (beta 2) Bug fix patch for the above. Forgot to change everything to lower case before using the Remove Duplicates command to remove cases where Blizzard's included both the upper case and lower case form of a sound. Removing 88 sounds bring Total sounds back down to 49,957

v5.2 (beta 1) Update for patch 5.2. Very large update - Adds 2492 new sounds after duplicates removed. New sounds Total now up to 52,449

v5.2 (beta 2) Due to favouring a list file approach versus a full extract with list files being used for error checking the slashes were going the wrong way. None of the macros were actually working. Forgot to test in game (whoops)

3.3.5 update finally done.

Yep yep.

With Elsa's help again got it done.

Also revised all the read me files. Some weren't wrapped correctly, the version history for 3.3.3 was incorrect as well as incorrect carriage returns and wrong encoding.

Going to check into this once I get to work to double check the files can be opened on windows machines without any problems.

EDIT : Checked it at work and redid the read me again. Reuploaded again in case anyone's wondering. All files should now be viewable

3.3.5 update pending

Yes It's coming.

I have all the MPQ files split open and all the files inside extracted.

I just need to clear a few real life tasks out of the way first then I'll start playing around with them.

Elsa , please email your listing if you have one for 3.3.5

UPDATE : Have decided will work on this when 3.3.5 is released worldwide.

No sense spending time updating if some people can't even use it !

Thanks - not that they were boneheaded mistakes. Just like the Spanish Inquisition, noone expects MPQ listfiles to randomly change capitalisation of top and second level folders. I'd blame MPQExtractor or Blizzard if I were you

How to temporarily fix the current sound list

I would happily do this, but there's no simple way to upload it because of the (strange) way that Optional Addon's work on wowinterface. That is, adding an optional addon forces the creation of a completely new addon which is linked via the Optional tab. The only way to get rid of it after it's out lived it's usefulness is to contact a moderator.

However, it's easy enough for folk to fix themselves. Here's how:-
  1. Open wowsoundsupdateto333.txt in your favourite text editor (Notepad, WordPad, UltraEdit etc).

  2. Open "search & replace" (sometimes just called replace).

  3. In the Search/Find box enter:

    Code:
    /
    In the Replace box enter:

    Code:
    \\
Note: Neither box should contain a carriage return character.

    Replace ALL.

  4. Open "search & replace" again.

    In the Search/Find box enter:

    Code:
    \\script PlaySoundFile("
    In the Replace box enter:

    Code:
    /script PlaySoundFile("
Note: There should be no carriage return after either ( character.

  5. Save changes.

  6. (Optional) Dance, sing and be merry.

I've sent you a detailed private message listing the main problem areas.
I'm not going to take those duplicates out Neither I think you should be taking them out either.

Firstly It comes out with so called "inconsistent naming" because that is exactly how it is named in the MPQ files. So if it's under "CREATURE" in one MPQ it could be under "creature" in another MPQ. I extract all the files then do a find * > list.txt to output a listing of all files that are extracted out of the MPQ files.

Capitalization is important as some sounds are duplicated in the MPQ files several times. So if you play the sound using "CREATURE" and not "Creature" it's actually playing out of a different MPQ file.

So they are not in fact duplicates. There was sounds with the same file name in multiple MPQ files.

Secondly we also have no way of knowing if Blizzard is going to use those other paths in the future. So for one patch they might use the sound of one MPQ. In another patch they might change it to use it's duplicate in another MPQ.

So the duplicate sound paths that you test for one patch may not work in another patch.

Lastly I do remember spot checking them at one point and one path would play and the duplicate would not. Rather then having to go through every one one by one I left the duplicates in there.

The reasons I've outlined above is why I'm not going to remove duplicates. I may of done at some point in the past but I'm not going to now - it's just too much effort to sort out what plays and what does not play and there is no guarantee Blizzard won't change which of the duplicates will actually play in game.

If you start removing duplicates you would have to remember to test the sounds that were duplicated to make sure they actually played and you would have to do that for every patch they put out.

Too much work IMHO. I will recheck my paths file when I get home but I will not be removing duplicates due to Capitalization. If it the same filename occurs in multiple MPQ files I'm not removing the duplicates

Sorry everyone I uploaded the wrong zip file.

The one you may have is an internal listing of every file in the MPQ files and was not meant to "go public"

Please redownload again for your usual list full of /script PlaySoundfile goodness

/facepalm

I ... erm ... uploaded the wrong zip file *ducks rotten tomatoes*

That's an internal list I keep of every file contained in the MPQ files.

It's that list I work off for extracting the sounds. I filter first on .mp3 files then on .wav files then everything else ie all other extensions to make sure I catch everything.

That list was never meant to go Live in any way shape or form and is only for my internal records.

Have uploaded the correct one now

Thanks

I've updated AudioX II (3.3.35) to take account of new sound data here. I've also added a full list of the 403 new sounds here.

Suggested improvements:
  • Consistent capitalisation for folders (E.g. "Creatures" instead of "CREATURES" and "creatures"), making the paths more readable and simply to process. Not that it matters to the WoW client (at least as far as soundpaths are concerned anyway).

  • Filter extract data for paths that contain filenames only. E.g. Lines in red are just paths to folders.
    common-2/Sound
    common-2/Sound/Ambience

    common-2/Sound/Ambience/GhostState.wav
    common-2/Sound/Ambience/GlueScreen
    common-2/Sound/Ambience/GlueScreen/GlueScreenLogin.wav
  • Place each extracted mpq's path data into a seperate text file, omitting the mpq name in the paths contained there in. E.g.

Where you have 3.3.3 mpq paths extract.txt containing:
    Code:
    common-2/Sound/Ambience/GhostState.wav
Instead have a file called common-2.txt containing :
    Code:
    Sound/Ambience/GhostState.wav

Minor quibbles aside, this new list is brilliant. Keep up the good work.
