Battle.net Ding Broadcaster

Version: 1.1
by: Rebelgecko [More]

Battle.net Ding Broadcaster does what the name implies... AND NOW EVEN MORE!

When your character dings or (optionally) gets a new achievement, it sends a Battle.net broadcast announcing what you have done to all of your RealID friends. After all, why manually take the time to spam your friends as you level an alt from 1-10 or do an instance for the first time when you can have a mod do it for you?

The mod will currently send out broadcasts when you level up or get an achievement. If you think there's something else that it should be able to broadcast, let me know.
I created this mod because patch 3.3.5 had been out for a whole day and there weren't any mods available that took advantage of the new features. I'd never made an add-on before, but I thought I'd give it a shot.

Achievement broadcasting is off by default, type "/bdb achievements true" (without the quotation marks) to turn it on.

Enjoy

Version 1.1: Added the option to broadcast achievements (/bdb achievements true). Currently off by default.

[edit] I've not been able to test this yet due to increasing downtime on the European realms from patch day (they've extended it twice now by 2 hours each time).

So I have a question: What happens when you earn lots of achievements or a level and an achievement at once? I'm guessing it rapidly changes your status for each of these things. That might prove annoying to a lot of friends as people often get two achievements at once (e.g. one is the last meta-condition of another) or ding and get an achievement for it too every 10 levels. This is the expected behaviour of the addon, I think, but if you're working on improving it it might be a good idea to add a limit to the announcements (e.g. no more than 1 per minute).

I can also imagine an amusing scenario where everyone in a 25man guild are Battle.net friends and down the lich king, each getting the achievement and announcing it to each other at the same time. Of course that in itself would be their fault and not a problem with the addon design (unlike the unlimited announces in a given time frame I mentioned above).
Thanks for your comment Ushas. This addon is still very much a work in progress in that while it does what its supposed to, it could do it much more nicely. To be honest, I haven't gotten multiple achievements at once or achievement/level simultaneously since I made the addon, but the way it is now it should send multiple broadcasts ("should" as in that's what to expect, although it's not really the cleanest way to do it). The 2nd issue I should be able to fix pretty easily (Just don't broadcast Level 10,20,30etc. achievements in addition to the Ding announcement). I'm looking into a few different things to make both multiple copies of achievements from different people and multiple simultaneous achievements from the same person less spammy on the receiving end.

break19—thanks for the heads up! I uploaded a new .zip that should be free of all the .svn and .DS_store junk

This, there is enough spam in chat from guild mates doing things on alts that i don't need to see it form all my friends as well.

Hey machead...

your zip file has mac osx-specific infos in it, as well as your .svn folder, neither of which are necessary.

I'd imagine your friends would love you if used this addon while gifting yourself levels via Recruit-A-Friend. Mwahaha!

Maybe you can make it just Ding Achiever announcer to announce achievements as well? Yeah, it would probably be a bit spammy, maybe make another addon for achievements?
I'm working on this right now, I'm going out of town but I should have a new version uploaded Saturday/Sunday. The mod now has an account-wide setting that tells it whether or not to broadcast achievements (the default is not to).
Thanks to working on and testing this mod, I've gotten really good at the Create Human-->Run around and get killed by defias dudes-->spirit rez by Goldshire-->run to mailbox and get the Can I keep him? Achievement routine.

This.

and you have no friends :O!
Don't worry, I'm not a sad hermit who made a mod to keep in touch with his imaginary friends. I just photoshopped them out on the screenshot. I didn't think they would appreciate everyone on WOWinterface being able to see their real names
