Notebook  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)
Version: 5.2.0.10
by: Phanx, Cirk
Save and share notes in-game!

Create an unlimited number of notes, each up to 2048 characters in length. Share your notes with other players via whisper, guild, officer, party, raid, instance, or chat channels. Notebook notes sent by other players will be temporarily added to your Notebook, where you will be able to read them at your leisure, save them permanently, or use them to update your existing note with the same name.

Using Notebook

Type /notebook or /note to open your Notebook, or bind a key to it in the Key Bindings window.

To add a note, click the New button in the upper right corner, enter a unique title, and start typing!

To edit a note, just type in the text area and start making changes. Click the Save button to save your changes permanently, or click the Cancel button to undo all your changes since the last time you saved. You can edit more than one note at a time. An asterisk will appear next to each note with unsaved changes. These unsaved changes will be lost if you log out or reload your UI, so don’t forget to Save!

To see details about a note, mouse over it in the title list. The tooltip will show who sent or edited the note last, when it was last received or saved, when it was last sent (if it was), and its size.

Sending Notes

Before you can send a note, first enable the “Can be sent” option for the note. By default, this option is disabled for notes you created yourself, but enabled for notes you received from other players. Also, notes with unsaved changes can’t be sent even if this option is enabled. Save your changes first!

To send the note, right-click the note's title, select the Send command in the menu, and then choose a channel to send the note to. Unavailable channels are grayed out. The Raid channel is only available to raid leaders and assistants at this time.

If you’re sending a note via whisper, you’ll be prompted to enter the player name. If you’re sending a note to a public server channel (like General or Trade) you’ll be prompted for confirmation before the note is actually sent. Notebook automatically ignores notes seen in public server channels, so these won’t show up in your Notebook.

Because Notebook allows you to send large pieces of text easily, it is important to point out that the responsibility for not spamming other players (and maybe even getting yourself banned by doing so) still rests on YOU! Notebook itself only imposes a very minimal limit on when you can send Notes (using a 5 second "cooldown" between sendings) because of legitimate reasons why you might need to send multiple Notes quickly.

Receiving Notes

When a Note is sent by another player to you (via raid, party, guild, whisper, or a custom chat channel), Notebook will automatically recognize this and add the Note to the notes shown in the All and Recent tabs. Notes shown in the Recent tab are either Notes you already have saved and have sent or received this session (these appear in yellow text and are editable), or Notes you have received and either do not have saved, or are an update to a Note you already have (these will appear in grey text and cannot be edited, although you can change their titles).

For received Notes shown in grey text, you will see one of two options on the buttons on the bottom-left of the Notebook window - Add (for new Notes) or Update (for Notes with the same title as one you already have, but different description text). Also, if you use the right-click menu to Delete a Note shown in grey text, you will not be prompted for confirmation like you will for Notes that you have saved.

Slash Commands

You can also use the following commands along with /notebook or /note:
  • help shows these options.
  • list outputs all the titles of your Notes to your default chat window.
  • welcome restores the initial welcome Note that comes with Notebook.

Hope you find it useful!
-- Cirk of Doomhammer
Version 5.2.0.10
  • Added support for Instance Chat

Version 5.1.0.7
  • Fixed sending notes to party/raid and numbered channels
  • Fixed some issues with the right-click menu on notes

Version 5.0.5.4
  • It's alive!

Version 3.2.0
  • Changed help text to format it for use with Blizzard options interface.
  • Replaced chat frame announcement with showing the description and slash commands in the Blizzard addons interface menu.

Version 3.0.1
  • Fixed issue that arises when logging in on a newly created character or after reinstalling WoW due to client messages arriving in unexpected order.

Version 3.0.0
  • Moved all functions into the one Notebook global table
  • Added tooltip text to the various buttons
  • Added channel numbers and correct channel ordering in the drop-down list for the channels
  • Changed the word "Remove" to "Delete" in the drop-down list
  • Removed the "Details" sub-menu from the drop-down list - this is now shown on the tooltip as you cursor over the note titles
  • Slowed down line sending rate to match Blizzard's recommendation of 1 per second
  • Added status option to report note count and memory used.
  • Various changes for version 3.0 compatibility

Version 2.2.0
  • Implemented basic modifications for Notebook to work with WoW 2 (and 2.2).
  • Replaced the "Saved" tab with an "All" tab, and added a "Mine" tab for per-current-character filtering (based on who the last saved author of the Note is).
  • Added description tooltips to the All, Mine, and Recent tabs.
  • Saving changes to a note automatically adds it to the Recent tab.
  • Implemented two fixes to avoid problems with saving Notes (one to avoid over-long strings as reported by Telic, and one to avoid a logout-before-login-completed bug).
  • Notes are now saved independent of realm, so you can access your notes on any server. Previous per-server notes will be automatically loaded and converted though, so you won't lose anything you had before.
  • If you have multiple pending-update notes with the same title, adding or updating to any one of them will remove the others from the pending list.
  • You can now only restore the welcome note (using /note welcome) if you don't have a note with the same name already.
  • Various minor tweaks to text messages, etc.

Version 1.11.0
  • Changed version and interface strings to match client patch 1.11.
  • Fixed up button usage to match the client patch 1.11 implementation.
  • Cosmetic code cleanups (login/logout and event code).
  • Changed maximum sent note length from 32 to 48 lines.

Version 1.9.0
  • First release on Wowinterface.com

I'll look into it tomorrow when the servers are back up. I haven't actually used the sending features much, and not at all in years. Should be a simple fix, though.

Thank you, Phanx.
I'm currently using Notebook, too.

In the future, I'll be cleaning up the code a bit (it definitely shows its age), but I don't plan to add, remove, or change any features. Notebook is pretty much perfect just the way it is; I've tried many other notepad-type addons over the years, and haven't liked any of them nearly as well.

Awesome. Thanks very much, Wusula!

For those of you that prefer to use a mod that is being actively maintained, TinyPad seems to be a suitable replacement. It has a bit of a different twist on format, but it can make many different notes, just like Cirk's, with notes accessible across characters.

My comments about Equilibrium Notepad still apply, and Bossnotes, while capable, is just not really meant for the same purpose (though it does excel at what it *is* meant for).

Wusula, thanks for your efforts on the fix.

Unfortunately, after trying 4 times, I still cannot get your fix to work and continue to get a constant stream of errors in-game. While I have no doubt that you reworked the code properly, I know pretty much nothing about coding myself. I simply attempted to make the supplied changes to the best of my ability.

Is there a member of the community using this addon that would be willing to make the necessary changes and upload the revised file for everyone to use?

If not, the best alternative I've found so far is "Boss Notes". I have tried "Equilibrium Notepad", but it is not as configurable as you can only have 2 pages of notes (1 per character + a "shared" page). There also seems to be a line/character limit, as it's not possible to simply cut/paste/reformat everything that Cirk's Notebook can hold into EqNotepad.

Any other suggestions for a light in-game notepad mod would be much appreciated

I fixed it by myself.
But I don't know how to upload here.
I just list how I fixed it below.
All changes are made in Notebook.xml

line 141:
Code:
			<OnClick>
				PlaySound("igMainMenuOptionCheckBoxOn");
				Notebook.Frame_ListButtonOnClick(self, button);
<!--				Notebook.Frame_ListButtonOnClick(self, arg1);-->
			</OnClick>
line 289:
Code:
					<OnMouseDown>
						local parent = self:GetParent();
						if (button == "LeftButton") then
line 745:
Code:
												local parent = self:GetParent();
												ScrollingEdit_OnTextChanged(parent, parent:GetParent());
<!--												ScrollingEdit_OnTextChanged(parent);		-->
											</OnTextChanged>
											<OnCursorChanged>
												-- A minor kludge to move to the top of the scroll-frame
												-- when resetting the text in the edit box
												if (self.cursorReset) then
<!--													arg2 = 0;	-->
													y = 0;
													self.cursorReset = nil;
												end
<!--												ScrollingEdit_OnCursorChanged(self:GetParent(), arg1, arg2 - 2, arg3, arg4);		-->
												ScrollingEdit_OnCursorChanged(self:GetParent(), x, y - 2, w, h);
												self:SetScript("OnUpdate", self.onUpdate);
											</OnCursorChanged>
											<OnUpdate>
												-- This default OnUpdate function gets replaced after the
												-- first OnCursorChanged event
<!--												ScrollingEdit_OnUpdate(self:GetParent());	-->
												ScrollingEdit_OnUpdate(self, elapsed, childFrame);
											</OnUpdate>
line 782:
Code:
												ScrollingEdit_OnUpdate(childFrame, elapsed, childFrame:GetParent());
<!--													ScrollingEdit_OnUpdate(childFrame);	-->
line 804:
Code:
							<OnVerticalScroll>
								Notebook.Frame_OnVerticalScroll(self, offset);
<!--							Notebook.Frame_OnVerticalScroll(self, arg1);	-->
							</OnVerticalScroll>
							<OnScrollRangeChanged>
								ScrollFrame_OnScrollRangeChanged(self, xrange, yrange);
<!--								ScrollFrame_OnScrollRangeChanged(self, arg2);		-->
							</OnScrollRangeChanged>
line 879:
Code:
							<OnVerticalScroll>
								Notebook.Frame_OnVerticalScroll(self, offset);
<!--								Notebook.Frame_OnVerticalScroll(self, arg1);	-->
							</OnVerticalScroll>
							<OnScrollRangeChanged>
								-- Scroll range will only change when we put new text into the
								-- textbox, so when this happens we also set the scrollbar
								-- position to zero to show the top of the text always.
								ScrollFrame_OnScrollRangeChanged(self, xrange, yrange);
<!--								ScrollFrame_OnScrollRangeChanged(self, arg2);		-->
								NotebookFrameTextScrollFrameScrollBar:SetValue(0);
							</OnScrollRangeChanged>
Hope I didn't miss anything.

Poor notebook...

Someone's going to have to take this poor thing over, it seems to be abandoned. I can see answers to a few of those problems you listed, Ross, but some of the others might be a bit more intractable.

Still servers the purpose but won't let me scroll with my mousewheel or use the arrows to move down on long text, Grabbing the bar and moving it down works but once you let go it moves back up, The "New" button brings up an error, The right click menu to delete and rename doesn't work.

Got these errors messing with notebook:

I too would like to make it much wider and I will edit the file myself also if you can tell us where?

Also, whenever I make a new note after the 3.3.5 patch it throws a lua error, but it still works regardless of error.

EDIT Okay I found that you can edit it in the .xml file but there is more too it than just changing one number here and there. I hope you will consider making it wider.
