AuldLangSyne manages your friends list.

It...

will remember information about friends and display it in your friends list while they are offline.
allows you to write short notes about these friends.
allows you to back up and restore your friends list.
allows you to synchronize your friends list between characters. (This is disabled by default, mind you.)
provides a FuBar plugin with all this information, all sortable, with configurable colors. (You can also use the plugin's menu to configure the rest of AuldLangSyne.)

AuldLangSyne is modular. Any and all parts of it can be disabled if you don't want them around.

Things this does better than CT_PlayerNotes:

Notes can be set to display when a player logs on, and in tooltips for that player.
You can have different notes for characters with the same name on different servers.

Things this does better than FriendsFacts:

Has a "compact" mode, showing all the info on one line, and the note on the next.
Colors class names in the friends list.
Has options to adjust which bits of friend info get displayed.
Has been updated for recent patches. Oh yes, I went there.

I wrote this because CT_PlayerNotes was the last CTMod I was using, and I wanted to get some practice writing a non-FuBar Ace2 addon. So this resulted. Yes, I know, it's derivative. But I think I do a better job than either of the inspirations.

If you disagree, please file feature reqests or bug reports so I can make a better addon.

If you already use CT_PlayerNotes, load the game with both addons enabled, and type "/auld data ctimport" to load its notes. (Due to the way CT_PlayerNotes stores its data, you will have to do this once for each character whose friends you have made notes on.)

Auld Lang Syne is the name of a song, mostly sung around New Years Eve, whose opening line goes "should auld acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind." (Literally, "auld lang syne' translates from Scots as "old long since", but may be better rendered as "times gone by".)

A million different modern addons using modern libraries (or no libraries) currently provide that functionality. You don't need AuldLangSyne for it.

Examples of such mods include AraBrokerGuildFriends, the previously mentioned SocialState, StatBlock_Folks, Tekkub's picoFriends (more up to date version at this link) and my personal favorite: the 'experimental' Broker_Friends. My fav due to the fact it uses less CPU time than any of the others mentioned and allows you to click a name in the list to start a chat with them.

All of the above are LibDataBroker (LDB) mods (the "successor" to Fubar). Examples of LDB data display mods for them to work with can be found at this link.

At one glance I could see which guildies and friends are online, whether they're afk or not (something the default social panes don't show, except when it's a realID friend), and if they're Officer rank in case I need one. Yes, I use FriendsWithBenefits these days, which is nice for the syncing, but it doesn't come anywhere near the list that ALS used to provide. I really, really wish I could have the functionality of this list again.

I think most people cared about the FuBar plugin which can be replaced with SocialState (using Broker instead of FuBar). Notes are built into the game now... If you want sync look for Tekkub's FriendsWithBenefits. There's some comments on the wowace side that can help you get things working sorta. But making it really work at this point in my opinion is just not worth it.

They are ok, but I didn't like having to hover over both.

So I am using Broker_SocialState in the meantime. It allows for personal notes of friends, but the only thing that it does not do, that ALS does is add personal notes for guild mates.

I get very forgetful and like to put personal notes on guild members so I know who is who hehehe

Just wanted to take a bit to say that playing without Auld Lang Syne is like missing a limb.
