Well, I'm all for showing respect for addon developers... up to the point where Blizzard has to agree that third parties can advertise to users in their game without their permission.

And while I know that not being plagued by popup ads in my gameplay isn't really Blizzard showing respect for me as much as it is Blizzard protecting it's profit margin, I can't say I can complain about the side effects.

Anyways I believe Blizzard was gonna have a type of program similar to your Outfitter.
They are in the next patch, though if Blizz's track record on this sort of thing is any indication, it won't be anywhere near as robust in function as Addons like ItemRack and Outfitter.

Either way, there will be others, I am certain. As for me, I'm off to download ItemRack.

It's their business and they run it how they seem fit. Someone will copy your Outfitter and put it out somewhere so it's not like OMG QQfest. Anyways I believe Blizzard was gonna have a type of program similar to your Outfitter. I hope since you are stopping on adding addons that you also quit WoW as your protest. You make addons for the game you love to play not to profit off it. Just remember that last bit.

but unfortunately you are because you are mad at the big bad game maker for changing something you don't approve of..
This is the only power I have to express my dissatisfaction with Blizzard. Activision is run by a business man, someone who admits he doesn't even play video games. Actions speak far louder than words in business, and perhaps my feeble little attempt at being heard will fall on deaf ears, or maybe enough other Whos from Whoville will add to the chorus and Blizzard will recgonize that "we're here".

Blizzard is probably well within their rights to institute this policy, but I'm well within my rights to disagree with it and refuse to support their game any longer.
If you choose not to support WoW then do it by canceling your account(s) as opposed to screwing over the users of your mod by your current actions. The whole "Screw you guys I'm goin home" mentality will push some away that were using your addon.

If someone wants to charge for an addon and someone else is willing to pay for it then I think that's their business. If QuestHelper wants to put a line of text in the chat window at login saying "please donate if you can" then that's their business. I can turn those addons off or use alternatives if I don't like it. This new policy just makes it clear that Blizzard wants a free R&D workforce to fill in the feature and usability gaps that their own development team is unable to fill, and that many users feel that addons aren't worth so much as a dime. I'm very disappointed by both of those groups.
Maybe. I can also see the ability to charge in that way being used as a loophole to solicit profit for less than scrupulous individuals (Gold sellers, for instance) as well. I suppose it depends on how you view it.

Personally I can see this as being good for users and even developers to some extent. But again, all in your point of view. I've always found myself appreciative of volunteer efforts for my part, and so long as this policy still gives me an avenue to show that appreciation (and it does), I can't personally see a problem with it.

But, I'm not you, of course.

What it prohibits is a "donation" link being added to the Addon itself.

You can still solicit as many donations as you like at a site like this, or curse, or your own website.

My understanding is that this move by Blizzard has mostly been to stop the commercialization of addons. A move I can also completely understand. Not sure if this is encouraging news to you, or even news you already knew and considered, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway.

The current version works fine in 3.0, and itemset switching is built-in to the game in 3.1 anyway. I expect there'll still be addons to automatically trigger switches, because 3.1 doesn't provide that functionality, but all of these addons would need to be rebuilt anyway. No great loss.

That's not to say that the authors' previous efforts aren't appreciated. They definitely are!

Thanks for the understanding, I appreciate it. I'll also try to upload a .zip file with nothing but a readme in it and see if that passes through the wowinterface scanners. I was concerned that if I didn't format the .zip as an addon (ie, folder + .toc + .lua) then it wouldn't accept it but I should try. I certainly am not trying to screw existing users out of their copies, I'm just angry and not thinking entirely clearly.

Well, for anyone who needs a working copy, feel free to drop me a line, and I'll be happy to provide a copy to you via e-mail, IM or whatever.

If that's the case and you are incapable of understanding the posts I just made explaining what happened and why...
No, I'd say you're apparently incapable of comprehending that:

"I've stopped developing outfitter"

doesn't equate to:

"the current update will disable outfitter".

Not the same. Not remotely.

I actually downloaded it form the list format in WoWI, which would have somewhat shortcut my ability to read your message on the front page. It's why I took the trouble to come back here and see if I had indeed slipped up in not reading it (which I'd have been happy to take the blame for), but since it wasn't there, I really can't, can I?

But if you slipped up, and copypasta's a cruel mistress, then so be it. Thanks for adding a warning. Shame it took several people skunking their working copies and complaining about it to get it to happen. Next time you decide to play Ghandi, might want to think a bit more about who else it may affect.

Email the admins, Cairenn or Dolby most likely, as I'm sure they'd respect your wishes.

I don't use Outfitter, and never have. I don't think this tactic will achieve what I *think* is your intended goal. That said, I respect your right to do with your addon as you please. My general hope is that the addon community - and more importantly, the end-users - will arrive at some common solution that meets Blizz's requirements, as well as the requirements of authors and users. I just don't think pulling addons is going to meet that objective.

Your feud with Blizzard is none of my business. I might have personally cared until you pulled this. Because principally, I actually agree with you about Blizzard's change in policy. But thanks to this little shenanigan you pulled, I don't now. And it appears I'm not the only one you disaffected, either.
If that's the case and you are incapable of understanding the posts I just made explaining what happened and why, then I don't give a damn about you any more than you give a damn about me.

I updated the project page and I posted a message explaining this and I'm offering to email people who need another copy one if they request it. If that's not good enough then so be it.
