  • Shortens chat channel names
  • Shortens cross-realm character names and Real ID player names
  • Replaces Real ID player names and BattleTags with WoW character names
  • Enables arrow keys without the Alt key (*)
  • Enables resizing chat frames by their edges
  • Makes all channels sticky (**)
  • Makes URLs clickable for easy copying
  • Moves the input box above the chat frame
  • Sets the delay time for chat text fading
  • Stops docked chat tabs from being dragged
  • Hides the scroll, menu, and social buttons
  • Hides extra textures on chat frames
  • Hides the flashing effect on chat tabs
  • Hides channel notification messages
  • Hides repeated messages in public channels
  • Enables class colored names in all channels with a single click
  • Changes the text size in all chat frames from a single control
(*) As of Patch 5.4 using Up/Down to access previously entered chat lines without the Alt key is limited to non-secure commands only. If you need to access previously entered secure commands (like /cast or /use) you will still need to hold the Alt key.

(**) If a channel is sticky, then after talking in that channel, the chat input box will open to the same chat type again, rather than making you type /g or /ra again.
Options & Commands
  • Type /pchat for options, or find them in the Interface Options.
  • Type /clear or /clearchat to clear all visible chat windows.
  • Type /clear all or /clearchat all to clear all chat windows.
  • Type /tt" or /wt to send a whisper to your current target.
Some additional options, such as customizing which channels are made sticky and what abbreviations are used for channel names, are available by editing the Core.lua file in a plain-text editor such as Notepad. If you break something, download a fresh copy and try again.

Post a ticket or comment. If you are reporting a bug, please include directions I can follow to reproduce the bug, whether it still happens when all other addons are disabled, and the exact text of the related error message (if any) from Bugger.

  • The "Replace real names" option will continue to replace both Real ID names and BattleTags with character names.

Version 3.3.5.94

Due to file changes, you should completely uninstall your existing copy of the addon before installing this version. Removing your old saved variables is recommended, but not required.
  • Added a Shorten Player Names feature, which shortens player names by removing realm names from cross-realm players and last names from Real ID players.
  • Removed the Auto Start Chat Log feature, because I never used it.
  • Removed the Color Player Names feature, because it was just too much code and performance overhead to color the very few types of messages that the default UI doesn't already color, and also confused all the people who never read patch notes or change logs.
  • Translations are needed for all locales.
  • All existing translations for the configuration UI have been discarded, since none of them had been updated since the transition from slash commands to a GUI over a year ago. If you can provide translations for any locale, please send me a PM.
  • Additionally, several chat channels are currently only shortened in English locales, because nobody has provided translations for them. If you see a channel name that isn't shortened, please post a bug report ticket with your locale (eg. "German" or "deDE"), the English name of the channel (eg. "General"), the localized name of the channel (eg. "Allgemein"), and an appropriate short form for your locale (eg. "A").

Version 3.3.5.72

  • Removed the “Enable mousewheel scrolling” option, since this functionality is now provided by the default UI.
  • Modified the default UI's mousewheel scrolling to scroll more lines at a time, page up/down on ctrl, and top/bottom on shift.
  • Fixed a bug preventing custom short channel name formats from using the channel name in addition to the channel number.
  • Translations are needed for the new options in all locales. Also, major revisions are needed for several locales. If you can assist with translations for any locale, please send me a PM.

This is an issue with any addon that modifies the chat frame in specific ways. Some time ago Blizzard "protected" the GM petition frame, to prevent anti-spam addons from automatically submitting petitions to report spam. This means that text can only be added to the petition frame if you directly type it in, or if it is inserted by "secure" code (i.e. Blizzard code that isn't "tainted" by an addon). Unfortunately, there's nothing any addon can do about this other than not modify the chat frame, which isn't very appealing to users of chat frame addons.

You can work around this restriction by opening a chat edit box, shift-clicking the player's name into that, and then copying and pasting into the petition frame.

Today, when I shift-clicked on someone's name to add it to a GM ticket I got a popup saying that Phanx Chat was blocked from an action blah blah, etc.

Is this a Phanx Chat issue or do you think some other addon (I use no other addons that interact with chat) might be causing it?

Thanks Phanx.

(lol, I'm a poet...)

No, nor do I plan to add one. If you need to copy text from chat (other than URLs) so often that retyping it is a pain, turn on Blizzard's chat logging feature by typing "/chatlog" or "/logchat" (I forget which one). Then, your chat will be logged to World of Warcraft\Logs\WoWChatLog.txt.

This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Thanks a lot. =)

One other thing... (Sorry if it's included in this mod)
Is there an addon that allows you to copy "any" text in your chat window and copy it to your clipboard?

Well, the exact time it takes your computer's operating system to read a file from the hard disk depends on your specific computer, but to make a long story short, it takes the same amount of time to load a 1kb file as it does to load a 24kb file, so splitting the advanced config variables into their own file would double the load time of the core + config variables. Due to the fact that each locale has its own translation file (it's much easier to keep them up to date if you can compare line numbers) and there's a TOC and the options file itself, there are currently 10 files to load; adding 1 more would essentially make the addon take 10% longer to load.

If you look at your addons, you'll find that many addons reference all of their embedded libraries from an "embeds.xml" file, and only reference that file in the TOC, instead of each library. This system was originally designed because addon authors discovered that when WoW tries to load a file that doesn't exist but is listed in a TOC, it greatly increases load time. Since some users don't use embedded libraries, and either download addons without them, or delete them after downloading, and run standalone copies of each library, this meant that before embeds.xml, every addon using Ace2, for instance, was referencing a dozen or more files in its TOC that didn't exist. By contrast, referencing the same files that don't exist from an XML file doesn't increase loading time so significantly.

Also, in order to have the variables in their own file, they would need to be in the global namespace, and everything you add to the global namespace slows down access to everything else in the global namespace, and has the potential to conflict with other resources (i.e. if another addon names its global variable the same thing).

I didn't know file i/o and ref'ing non-existant files increased load times. ;-)

The options available in the Lua file are advanced confirguration, and are not officially supported. I'm not willing to significantly increase my addon's loading time (file I/O is by far the slowest part of loading, and on top of that, referencing files from a TOC that don't actually exist greatly increases loading time) just because you don't want to copy and paste a few lines once every couple of months.

Could we have the options in Core.lua be saved in another file? ie: have another file called "coreoptions.lua" or something, not originally with the installation, and if the mod finds it, use those options instead of the default ones?

Ah. Well, that right there is exactly why I want bug reports posted in the bug report tracker. I maintain a dozen addons, and have plenty of non-addon related things to keep track of in life too. If I don't have time right away to look into a bug (and right around the Wrath launch I had far more pressing bugs in other addons to fix, not to mention actually playing the game), and it's not something that affects me (to remind me), I'll probably forget about it. If it's posted in the bug report tracker, I'll see it on a daily basis (I leave my bug report page permanently open in a tab), whereas if it's just posted in the comments, I'll probably never see it again. Someone else just posted a bug report about your problem, though, so it will be fixed soon.

Some time ago when Wotlk was launched I quoted another user here facing the same problem, to which you replied as well. Below are the quotes. That is why I assumed this hasn't been fixed yet, maybe I've missed something or maybe not. Hope you're gonna fix it, PhanxChat is a great addon.

#1 - I'll look into it.

#2 - No. There are so few messages from the server channels that it's not worth the code to selectively suppress only them. I wrote the channel notice suppression feature specifically to suppress custom channel notifications, because it annoyed me seeing "X joined channel" and "Y left channel" all night during raids. If you want to see that stuff, just disable the option and live with the few lines you get from the server channels when changing zones.

Same thing for me, suppress channels setting doesn't get saved and resets with each login, unlike suppress repeats that works fine.

phanxchat doesn't save the "suppress channels" settings for me

every time I log in it's back to "enabled" and I have to disable it again

also...is it possible to suppress only the non custom channels?

Considering that I have not been made aware of any problems with channel notice suppression, I don't know how you expect me to fix it in any time... if you want to see who's joining and leaving channels, turn off the feature, and make sure that the "Channel" message group is enabled on your chat tab in the Blizzard chat settings panel (the one you get to by right-clicking the chat tab and selecting "Settings"). If that isn't working, please be more specific about what the problem is and I'll be more than happy to look into it.

Apparently the suppression channels thingy will not be fixed in due time. I really need to see who is joining and leaving my personal channels and PhanxChat doesn't provide this anymore (unintended glitch, bug or what). I'm sorry to say that after using PC for a long time I was forced to switching to another chat addon. My two cents.

Read my last reply. The global function FCF_SetChatWindowFontSize is emphatically not the same as the SetFont method on font strings and scrolling message frames. If you can't figure that out, I suggest you take a look at one of the many free WoW programming resources that exist online.

And no, I will not add this option; I find the "mouse-in alpha" feature in the default UI quite sufficient for reading text on distracting backgrounds, without the annoying side effect of making the chat window stand out all of the time like an outline would.

Finally, PhanxChat is in no way a replacement or substitute for ClearFont; the two have totally different purposes.

PhanxChat doesn't add outlines or otherwise modify the chat font in ways that the default UI cannot. The font size setting is merely a convenience to save you from having to right-click every tab and set the size over and over if you want to change it.
Yea I like that feature alot so I was thinking like, FCF_SetChatWindowFontSize(nil, _G["ChatFrame"..i], v, "THINOUTLINE") but this didn't work, I dont know much about lua editing i just switched from clearfont, any other option? Maybe you can make an option to set outline true / false
