NeedToKnow: Simple, effective timer bars

Track specific buffs, debuffs, and cooldowns with bars that always appear in the same place in the same color. NeedToKnow is great for short buffs and debuffs you use a lot. For example, a rogue could show bars for Slice and Dice, Rupture, and Garrote.

  • Easy to set up
  • Works with spells, abilities, items, totems, procs, and internal cooldowns
  • Track more than one spell or ability with one bar
  • Works with Retail and Classic WoW

Other features
  • Save setups for different specializations
  • Track by name or spell ID
  • Show cast time indicator to see when to refresh buffs and debuffs before they finish
  • Make bars deplete at same rate to see which will finish first
  • Blink bars when buff or debuff missing
  • Track buffs on raid members without having to focus them

Instructions

General options are available in the Blizzard interface options menu. You can type "/needtoknow" or "/ntk" to lock/unlock the addon. To configure individual bars, right click them while unlocked. Bars work while locked. If you only see full bars that aren't changing in response to anything, they are unlocked! Just type /ntk to lock them and get them working for you.

You can enable more groups of bars by going into the Interface settings off the main menu and choosing the AddOns tab.

When entering your settings, be careful with your spelling and capitalization. Also remember that buffs and debuffs sometimes have different names than the items and abilities that apply them. The Death Knight ability Icy Touch, for example, applies a DoT called Frost Fever.

On each bar you can enter in multiple buffs/debuffs deliminated by commas. They are prioritized according to order.
i.e. "Rake, Lacerate" - If both are applied, will display Rake until it expires and then it will track Lacerate
i.e "Curse of Recklessness, Curse of Exhaustion, Curse of Shadows" - Good way to track single instance curses

If you wish to use SpellID, make sure you are using the correct one!

FAQ

Why won't NeedToKnow work for me? I set it up but the bars just sit there at full, not moving or tracking anything.
The bars only time things when the addon is locked. Type "/needtoknow" or "/ntk" to lock/unlock the addon. You can also use the buttons in the AddOns tab of the Blizzard Interface Options menu.
Why won't NeedToKnow track this buff/debuff? It works for other things.
Check your spelling and capitalization. Also remember that buffs and debuffs sometimes have different names than the items and abilities that apply them. The Death Knight ability Icy Touch, for example, applies a DoT called Frost Fever. If you're using a SpellID, make sure you have the correct one.
How do I track multiple buffs or debuffs on a single bar?
Enter the name of each buff/debuff separated by commas. They are prioritized according to order. For example, "Rake, Lacerate" will display Rake until it expires and then it will track Lacerate. "Curse of Recklessness, Curse of Exhaustion, Curse of Shadows" is a good way to track single-instance curses.
How do I get more bars?
You can enable more groups of bars by going into the Interface settings off the main menu and choosing the AddOns tab. If four groups of six bars isn't enough for you, consider another timer bar addon. Also consider rethinking your UI.
How do I get NeedToKnow to track my own DoTs but not those applied by other members of my class?
Select "Only show if cast by self" in the bar's configuration menu.

Future versions of NeedToKnow will not include the reminder icons. They've been spun off into their own separate mod called TellMeWhen, with greatly expanded functionality.

Things requested in the comments below that can be done with TellMeWhen include:

- show when a mob does not have a specific debuff
- show when the player does not have a specific buff
- icons can be clicked through
- variable number of rows/columns of icons

yeah, forgot about that. need to fix that thing.

as mentioned in the addon description, the icons indicate currently only indicate when spells or items are off cooldown and are ready to be used. in future versions of the mod, they will be able to tell you if a buff is present or not, but that functionality is not yet implemented.

looks like a good mod, and i am interested in using it.

however, in v1.2 (which i just installed) there are some idiosynchrasies.

as an example... when i try to configure a bar for my shaman's "Lightning Shield", i get a bar that does indeed appear to reflect the remaining time on the buff... but the bar's label reads "%d m - Lightning Shield". i assume there is some attempt to format a time, perhaps in minutes, into the text on the bar's label... but that does not seem to be functioning yet.

as well, typing "Lightning Shield" into an icon's configuration currently results in the lightning shield skill icon appearing, but without a text timer, any sort of spinner effect that could suggest remaining duration, the alpha remains consistently at 100% whether the buff is present or not, the icon is not operative as a means of casting the corresponding spell, and etc.

maybe a screen shot of the mod actually in use would help prospective users visualize what it can do (i see the screen shot, but it looks a lot like the the default configuration, and i am afraid i am still confused), and an actual full-spectrum example in the readme file would help prospective users configure it properly?

This is an excellent AddOn. It's still working for me in WoW version 2.33. I consider it essential for my raiding rogue. I'm hoping this one gets adopted by a kind AddOn whiz who can advance and improve upon it someday.

Nice work! Like others, I've been looking for something like this for quite some time. I've used Flexbar & Discord Action Bars to set up similar behavior before. Since those are pretty much defunct now, I've been wanting a substitute, and this is pretty much it!

Couple suggestions for features that I would find really useful:

1) Drag & drop from spellbook in order to place abilities in the bar

2) Show whether an ability is out of range on the icons (colored red or whatever the default for the standard action bars is)

3) Show the cooldown spiral on the icons for the global cooldown only

4) Ability to set the # of rows & columns for the icons (so you could have 1x7, 2x4, 4x9, etc.). Basically, I would love to be able to set up the icons to mimic my hotkeys a bit closer.

Anyway, thanks again, and I hope to see this mod around for many versions to come!

A few suggestions

First of all, I would like to thank you for this mod

Personally, I find it more helpful when the width of the S'n'D bar isn't dynamic. The bar should only start at 100% when you fire off a 5 CP SnD. Thus the bar will have a constant speed of depletion.
Also the Blizzard borders are hideous :P An option to just disable them would be welcome.

Genius

This mod is complete genious. I've been looking for something like it for a very long time now. This is going to take a lot of the bar-staring out of tanking...thanks!

I've got a couple of requests for a additional features:
I play a warrior and would like to monitor Heroic Strike with this. Heroic Strike is an ability that triggers on the next melee attack. Consequently, it is never unavailable...clicking it just toggles it between an "on" or an "off" state. I need this to be reflected in the display on Need To Know. If Heroic Strike is "on" then it shouldn't appear on the list as another click will switch it "off" before it has fired. Currently it always appears, making it pretty pointless to have an icon for it.

I'd like to see the global cooldown represented in some way so that I can time my attacks.

Currently you can't click through it. If this is in the centre of a target and I right click to attack, it blocks the click. That makes it difficult to place in the centre of the screen without it causing issues.

Only other thing is, I don't think it works well in conjunction with oCD - http://www.fuxsake.net/t20-otravi_Cooldowns.html

All in all, this is an excellent mod...thanks again.

Inverting the sense of reminders?

I'm not sure exactly what I'm thinking of here, but the idea that occurred to me is that I really never care about Arcane Intellect unless it has less than two minutes left. Then I suddenly start caring. So, it might be cool to have a "show only if less than N seconds" option on the bars. Most importantly, though, I want the bar to be there if I don't have my buff. (This is especially true of my poor sad druid, who has no fewer than THREE buff spells to keep up.) The reminder buttons might be usefully extended to show you a given spell/ability only if you don't currently have it on, not just when the cooldown has expired.

the mod looks pretty sweet in general. id still like to use the bars for cooldowns too instead of buff fades, as displaying abilities with short CDs like fireblast, CoC and blink (ye, im not a rogue ;P) would be very convenient via the bars. thus, making the bars a bit more customizable would clearly be nice

Remindericons!

First off id like to thank for the perfect addon for my rogue. Its the one addon that made my UI just perfect

I cant get the remindericons to work properly though, and allthough i dont really need reminding, it would be awesome to get them working, seeing as theyre implemented in the addon and all.
My problem is trinkets, and their inability to show up as remindericons. Ive tested with Insignia of the Alliance and the new "Earthstrikeish" trinket, Bladefist's Breadth.
Ive tested with showing reminders in and out of combat. When the trinkets are cooled down, their icons show up for a splitsecond, then disappear and stay gone.
The remindericon for Cold Blood works perfectly.

Any suggestion to what i could possibly do to make it work properly?

Big thanx in advance!

Update

Version 1.1
- Icons will now show when reactive abilities (Riposte, Execute, etc.) are available.
- Added options for bar color and texture.
- Added graphical user interface. Most slash commands gone.
- Added localization support. Translations would be much appreciated.
- Users of older version will need to re-enter settings.

Thanks for the kind words, kazamx.

Tracking debuffs on mobs or other players is much much more complicated than tracking them on yourself. You have to 'figure out' information that Blizzard deliberately witholds from the UI. It involves a whole lot of extra code, making the AddOn bigger and slower. And since there are other AddOns that do it already, I don't see myself tackling that problem anytime in the near future. Sorry.

Can I start by saying this Mod is FANTASTIC, thank you and well done.

If I may be a real pain and beg grovel and plead for you to make a Mod just like this but shows debuffs to a mob.

As a Druid I would love to be able to see Bash, Maim, Moonfire, Entangaling roots etc. I know there are other mods out there that do this sort of thing, but your design is just so nice.

Once again thank you

What you're talking about is definitely doable, but it's not in this mod and should probably be a separate mod in itself. Basically it'd be like the cooldown icon bar here, but the icons would show when your target doesn't have the relevant debuff. You should make it. You could even cannibalize my icon code and just rewrite the Show()/Hide() conditions.

Note: It wouldn't be able to distinguish between 'your' debuff and one that someone else cast, though. Blizzard delibrately keeps that functionality out of the addon API.
