Pawn calculates scores for items to help you easily find upgrades for your gear. It's completely customizable, and applicable to any class and situation: for example, it can help you decide whether to equip the ring with a higher item level but one stat you don't want (say, strength for shamans), or the ring with the lower item level but all good stats. It's that level of customization that makes it very different from more general mods like GearScore and more specialized mods like TankPoints.

Pawn can be used by new players right off the bat without needing to change any options, or by advanced players who plan out their gear upgrades, build Excel spreadsheets, install Rawr, and read Elitist Jerks.

Language support

Pawn works with English, French, German, Portuguese, Russian, and Simplified Chinese, and includes an untested translation into Traditional Chinese. Unlike most addons, it's NOT possible to use the English version on a language that it doesn't support. (If you're interested in helping translate Pawn into other languages, let me know!)

Getting started

Pawn will automatically set itself up to work with your characters, but there's a lot that you can do to customize it. See the readme file included with Pawn for more information on getting the most out of Pawn.

Pawn 2.0 only works on World of Warcraft 7.0, the Legion prepatch. If WoW 7.0 hasn't launched in your region, make sure that you're still using Pawn 1.9.x.

Version 2.0.4

By popular demand, the Ignore Valor and Baleful Upgrades option has returned. It's on by default, but you can turn it off to better compare new gear.
I'll wait to remove this option until Legion actually launches.

Fixed a bug where one-handed weapons would appear to be upgrades for dual-wielding characters far too often.

Adjusted the value of gems to account for a difference in the values of Draenor gems on the live version of the patch versus what they had on beta.
Increased the item level threshold at which Pawn will start suggesting that you use Legion gems so that you shouldn't see that happen on your Mythic Hellfire Citadel gear. (Looks at own gear and weeps softly)

Version 2.0

New features and big changes

By default, Pawn will now automatically make suggestions based on your current spec and nothing else, and it will automatically switch its suggestions whenever you change specs. If you prefer to show multiple specs on your tooltips and customize them, just go to the Scale tab and switch to Manual.
To keep things simple, when deciding whether a new item is an upgrade, Pawn will now just compare it against what you currently have equipped. This should be more straightforward now that gear works for all specs, and better mimics the way that other RPGs with similar features (like Diablo) work. You can return to the previous Pawn behavior if you prefer by switching to Manual mode on the Scale tab, and then checking "track for each scale" on the Options tab.
All of the built-in scales have been rebuilt from scratch. For now, the stat values are simplified and are not coming from Wowhead, but I expect to resume getting expert advice from them in the coming weeks.
Please report any bugs you find with incorrect item types marked as not being usable, and so on!

Other less exciting stuff

This version now supports all of the languages that Pawn 1.9 supported—special thanks to the Pawn translation volunteers!
Not all translations are complete yet, but if you do notice something completely broken, please let me know what, and which language.
The Pawn UI visuals have now been slightly tainted by the Fel.
Pawn will now show spec icons on your tooltips (only for default scales), which should make them easier to find and tell apart. You can turn this off on the Options tab.
Built-in scales that are designed for only your current class will no longer show the class name on item tooltips. For example, "Havoc: +14% upgrade" instead of "Demon Hunter: Havoc: +14% upgrade".
Pawn's gem database has been fully updated to account for the stat changes in patch 7.0.
To keep the suggestions manageable, Pawn will no longer consider multi-stat (green, orange, or purple) gems on low-level items.
The Gems tab has been simplified, and will no longer show each gem three times (under red, yellow, and blue gems).
The "Defaults" button on the Scale tab has been removed. A new "Template" button has been added, which creates a more useful scale to start from for your current spec.
Pawn's Socketing Advisor now gives a full list of gems when you have Automatic mode enabled (which is the default).
Pawn's features for assuming that you'll use Valor and Baleful tokens to upgrade your items have been removed.
Removed support for Bonus Armor, Spirit, Multistrike, Spell Power, and colored sockets, as those stats have been removed from the game.
Removed support for meta sockets, PvP Resilience, and PvP Power, as those stats are not relevant on any current gear (though they do still exist in-game, such as on the Dreadful Gladiator sets).
Dodge and Parry on low-level items and tank heirlooms will now be interpreted as if it were Stamina.
Attack Power on low-level items will now be interpreted as if it were Strength or Agility, whichever your scale values most.
I expect that for most players, Pawn's memory usage will decline significantly.

Bug fixes and minor tweaks for 7.0

I improved the "getting started" text that probably nobody reads. Now it'll take even less time for people to not read it.
The Pawn UI now opens to the Compare tab by default (except the first time you open it).
Fixed a rare division by zero error that could occur when wearing cosmetic armor with no stats.

GameTooltip:GetItem() is currently bugged when the item was set via SetQuestItem; it returns an empty string for the item name, and an item link with no name an and ID of 0 (eg. "", "|Hitem:0:0:0:0...|h[]|h"). As a workaround to let me see Pawn values on quest reward choices, I modified the SetQuestItem hook in Pawn.lua (line 224) to look like this:

I also added a new hook for the SetHyperlink method of the WorldMapTooltip, so I can see Pawn values in the tooltips from addons like HandyNotes_DraenorTreasures that add item icons to the world map:

Finally, I got tired of seeing "upgrade!" in tooltips for items I can't actually equip, so I added some code in the PawnGetStatsFromTooltip function to stop if it finds any red text on a line that has both left and right text (eg. "Waist .... Cloth" or "Ranged ... Crossbow"). There may be some cases where this won't work, and it might be more efficient to do this by looking at the return values from GetItemInfo instead, but I haven't noticed any issues in my normal gameplay.

Hi! Yes, Pawn is not currently compatible with Italian WoW. Translating Pawn is quite a lot of work, but if you don't mind some tedious trial and error, you can find out more about what it takes here:

The other likely case is for quest rewards. If your game client hasn't gotten the name and stats of an item from the server by the time that it shows up on-screen, then Pawn won't be able to add the green arrow icon on top of it. If you don't see the arrow on a quest reward, but then when you hover over it and the tooltip has a green border and does have an icon on it, then that's what happened. (In that particular case, Pawn won't show any icons on any of the rewards if one of them wasn't downloaded in time, to make sure it doesn't give the wrong suggestion.)

Thanks, but I wasnt only speaking of resources, now I understand its a bug, but what about gear, even on gear sometimes the green up arrow doesnt show to me, unless i'm understanding it wrong

Hi! Yes, there's a bug in which the Garrison Resources chest will show the upgrade arrow when you loot it IF the last thing that you won (where "won" means anything that showed the "you won!" popup) was an upgrade.

For now, whenever it happens, just imagine that you got some Complicated Wood instead of Simple Wood that will get used in your upgraded building. Exciting!

Is there a bug with the "show up-arrow upgrades percentage"

the green up-arrow that tells "upgrade" underneath item, or even when I gather resources sometimes it shows upward green arrow for one of my chars. and the other character it doesn't show that at all, both characters are the same name that could be the only reason I'm thinking why its bugging for me.

Thank you so much for this! I have always had a hard time understanding if what I just got is better than what I have on, for my class/spec. Now an add-on actually tells me!

I can't believe, people just keep suggesting I get out of the game and go to a website and compare on a website. I can compare manually in game with this, or I can let it do it for me via the tooltips (which I do). It's awesome! Ever since I've been using this, I've been able to survive better, and kill things faster on my Elemental Shaman. I haven't tried group content with him yet, he's level 91 right now.

This is now an essential add-on for me. Without it, I don't know what I'd do... I guess break my immersion with the game's story lines, and alt tab out and use my browser to search... which I'm so glad I don't have to do. I never understood why people just accept things how they have known them and never try to change them. You clearly aren't like that, because you took it upon yourself to create an add-on that does what was lacking in game for this particular reason! There needs to ne more people like you, and less that say "Just go to a website..." or "that's just the way it is" and just be lazy!

Hi! For purposes of deciding which item is best for a slot, and upgrades versus that item, Pawn will only scan your currently-equipped items and items that you have in equipment sets. Beyond those items, it will also remember the best thing that you've equipped since the last time something changed that invalidated the score (such as by changing the values in the weight scale).

So, if there are items in your bank that you don't want considered,

(1) If they're in one of your character's equipment sets (for easy withdrawal, for example), then there isn't currently any way to get Pawn to stop thinking about those items.

(2) If they're just something you've worn before but you swapped them out, the "Re-scan gear" button on the Options page will make Pawn forget about them until the next time you equip them.

I'd like it if we had the option to consider things in on our character and/or bags only, and exclude the bank. This would enable us to rate gear without heirlooms screwing everything thing up (because while leveling they are almost always the best gear). And it would give us a place to store other gear that we might not want to have considered.

Item level is shown on the Compare tab if the two items have different item levels, but it's never taken into account when calculating anything.

Did you try to install updates to addons and then just log out and back in or do a /reload? You need to close WoW and restart it so that WoW will pick up all of the latest files.
