Pawn  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 2.2.14a
by: VgerAN [More]

Pawn helps you find upgrades for your gear and tell which of two items is better for your spec. Start with built-in advice from Ask Mr. Robot, or customize Pawn's stat weights to have it suggest items based on your favorite class guide or simulator. Pawn can help you decide whether it's better to use the cloak with 500 mastery or the one with 450 crit—whether you're just starting out, or you're an advanced player who plans out gear upgrades and regularly simulates and evaluates performance.

Language support

Pawn works with English, French, German, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish (European and Latin American), Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. Unlike most addons, Pawn's language has to match the language you play WoW in.

Staying in touch

For fastest assistance with Pawn, check the official thread at Curse. You can also become a fan of Vger on Facebook and get updates of new versions and stuff like that. You can also leave questions or comments there.

Getting started

If you're new to Pawn, don't worry—Pawn will automatically set itself up to give you advice based on math done by the experts at Ask Mr. Robot. Just watch for Pawn's green arrows. If you decide you want to go further, there are a lot of ways that you can customize Pawn, by tracking multiple specs at once, importing custom stat weights, and more.

Found a bug?

If you think you might have found a bug, just leave a comment here. In addition to a description of the problem, please make sure to include: (1) the language that you use Pawn and WoW in, (2) the specific items that don't work as expected, and (3) your class and spec if you're using the built-in (not custom) stat weights. Screenshots are usually very helpful as well.

Version 2.2.14

Pawn will now suggest blue-quality gems on heroic Tomb of Sargeras gear or better, and the epic-quality gems on heroic Antorus gear.
Translation updates for German courtesy of Salty from Curse.
(Version 2.2.14a) Translation updates for French courtesy of Kangourousse from Curse.

Version 2.2.13

More language updates for WoW patch 7.3. (If I do four of these updates I get a special cache full of epics.)

Version 2.2.12

Fixed a problem introduced by WoW patch 7.3 that caused Pawn to not work properly in the Spanish (Spain) version of WoW.
More updates for WoW patch 7.3.

Version 2.2.11

Updates for compatibility with WoW patch 7.3.

Version 2.2.10

Added a compatibility fix for AethysRotation and other addons that scan your artifacts while you're logging in.

Version 2.2.9

Stat weights for all classes and specs have been updated based on hotfixes, balance changes, and new simulations.
Pawn will now suggest blue-quality gems only on items that are higher than level 900.

Version 2.2.8

Added new guidance and stat weights for all classes and specs to account for changes in WoW patch 7.2.5. The new weights are optimized for Mythic Keystone dungeons a higher gear level (870) than in previous versions of Pawn, given how quickly one can gear up alts currently.
In addition, the new weights for Assassination Rogues now assume that you use Master Poisoner.
Fixed a problem in Korean WoW that was introduced in 2.2.7.
Additional changes to French support to improve performance for players in all languages.
Lots of translation updates for Portuguese courtesy of Pawn fan tiagopl. (No updates for other languages in this update.)

Version 2.2.7

Pawn is now compatible with the French version of WoW patch 7.2.5.

Version 2.2.6

Pawn will now wait to start suggesting relics for the third slot of your artifact until you've actually unlocked it. (I thought it would be helpful for collecting a relic before you finish the questline, but it's proven to be annoying and misleading in practice.)

Version 2.2.5

Made a change to try to improve integration with Bagnon.

Version 2.2.4

Fixed a bug in Pawn where for some low-level characters, Pawn wouldn't recognize that one of your artifact's relic slots was locked, and would suggest relics for that slot.

Version 2.2.3

English: Fixed a problem where the Survival Hunter artifact Talonclaw didn't ever show relic upgrades. (It's possible that this problem exists for other artifacts—it would occur any time that the artifact had a different name on the item tooltip versus the shift-right-click artifact pane.)

Version 2.2.2

Worked around a game bug where WoW was saying that BoE relics looted at level 110 and then passed to lower-level characters would get fewer ilvls from that relic than they actually would.
Some other addons simulate shift-right-clicking on your artifact at logon to get information about it. This caused Pawn to sometimes receive incorrect information about your artifact, which would cause it to overestimate how much of an item level upgrade a relic would be. Pawn will now detect when this is happening and ignore the bad information it received.
Russian: Includes translations for new relic features.

Version 2.2.1

Fixed a bug in Pawn 2.2 where items in a player's bags that required a higher player level and couldn't be equipped were still getting green arrows.
Pawn will no longer work with WoW 7.1.5.
English: Relics that give a single level increase will now say "+1 level" instead of "+1 levels".
Russian: Hopefully fixed some of the catastrophic problems that started occurring with patch 7.2.
Italian: Includes translations for new relic features.

Version 2.2

Includes fixes for compatibility with WoW patch 7.2.
Pawn will now highlight relics that are an item level upgrade to one or more of your artifacts. Note that this upgrade feature is completely separate from Pawn's existing upgrade features—it's based on item level increase, not stats, and your custom scales are not used in any way.
This feature won't work until after you shift-right-click your artifacts. You only have to do that once (for each artifact) after upgrading to Pawn 2.2.
This feature will work for all of your artifacts regardless of which spec you're in.
Top-tier players who want to min/max specific artifact traits rather than focusing purely on their artifact's item level may want to turn this feature off—see Pawn's Options tab to do so.
Pawn will now suggest the cheap 100-stat gems on more items.

Removing the option to have Pawn track both DW and 2H weapon upgrades. My understanding is that in Legion, there won't be any specs that are designed to work with both options except casters, and that's only through level 100. I believe we're getting our artifact weapons right at the beginning of Legion—there won't be any further weapon drops or quest rewards once you leave Draenor.

Making sure that your best two-handed weapon is in an equipment set can help. Beyond that, there probably isn't much I can suggest. I will probably be removing that option in the next major version of Pawn since it won't be relevant anymore when Legion hits (since everyone will be using their artifacts).

Sorry!
Hmm. Removing which option? And I haven't been following the buzz about Legion that hard, but will people have artifacts from the very beginning? I had thought (perhaps wrongly) that it was something we had to work up to.

Weird recommendations?

I got a low-level item in the salvage yard, and noticed that it claimed to be an upgrade. Now, it's a 2 handed weapon, and I'm currently wielding 2 one handers, but I've wielded better 2 handers since the last time I tried to reset the values. Here are two screenshots, one showing the upgrade (and what I'm currently using) and one showing my settings.

What am I doing wrong?

Ah, very nice feature - once you know about it
Handy to be able to turn it off for a recently dinged alt without upgrade resources.

Thank you for replying.

Hi! In the current versions, Pawn will assume that you're going to upgrade any Baleful gear you get using Empowered Apexis Fragments to turn it to level 695, so it always compares with that version in mind. (Similarly, it assumes that you'll either upgrade new items with Valor.) If you don't want Pawn to assume that you'll upgrade items, you can check the "ignore Valor and Baleful upgrades" option on the Options tab, and then it will behave like previous versions.

Hope that helps!

Uses stats for purple version, not my actual gear

I've switched back to 1.9.20 (my previous downloaded version) instead of the current 1.9.24.

I'm an Unholy Death Knight with standard settings. I couldn't understand why Pawn wasn't showing the purple lvl 665 Felbane Greaves of the Peerless as an upgrade for equipped blue ilvl 650 Felbane Greaves of the Merciless. Using the Compare tab on my two items showed me why (?): Pawn 1.9.24 seems to be using the values for a purple version of the blue boots too. Going back to 1.9.20 fixed the issue.

PS Thank you for this add-on. It takes the brain worry out of comparing gear

Thanks! That did it. I needed to add the same hack to SetQuestLogItem, but now things seem to be working correctly. Much appreciated! (Also, much appreciated for your work in pioneering compact raid frames. )

GameTooltip:GetItem() is currently bugged when the item was set via SetQuestItem; it returns an empty string for the item name, and an item link with no name an and ID of 0 (eg. "", "|Hitem:0:0:0:0...|h[]|h"). As a workaround to let me see Pawn values on quest reward choices, I modified the SetQuestItem hook in Pawn.lua (line 224) to look like this:
Code:
	hooksecurefunc(GameTooltip, "SetQuestItem", function(self, ...)
		local ItemLink = GetQuestItemLink(...)
		if ItemLink then
			PawnUpdateTooltip("GameTooltip", "SetHyperlink", ItemLink)
		end
	end)
I also added a new hook for the SetHyperlink method of the WorldMapTooltip, so I can see Pawn values in the tooltips from addons like HandyNotes_DraenorTreasures that add item icons to the world map:
Code:
	hooksecurefunc(WorldMapTooltip, "SetHyperlink", function(self, ...) PawnUpdateTooltip("WorldMapTooltip", "SetHyperlink", ...) end)
Finally, I got tired of seeing "upgrade!" in tooltips for items I can't actually equip, so I added some code in the PawnGetStatsFromTooltip function to stop if it finds any red text on a line that has both left and right text (eg. "Waist .... Cloth" or "Ranged ... Crossbow"). There may be some cases where this won't work, and it might be more efficient to do this by looking at the return values from GetItemInfo instead, but I haven't noticed any issues in my normal gameplay.
Code:
		for Side = 1, 2 do
			-- <snip>
			else
				local RightLine = _G[TooltipName .. "TextRight" .. i]
				CurrentParseText = RightLine:GetText()
				if (not CurrentParseText) or (CurrentParseText == "") then break end
				RegexTable = PawnRightHandRegexes
				CurrentDebugMessages = false
				IgnoreErrors = true

				local r, g, b = RightLine:GetTextColor()
				if r > 0.98 and g < 0.13 and b < 0.13 then -- red: 0.99999779462814, 0.12548992037773, 0.12548992037773
					return
				end
				r, g, b = LeftLine:GetTextColor()
				if r > 0.98 and g < 0.13 and b < 0.13 then
					return
				end
			end
Feel free to incorporate any/all of these changes in the official version.

Re: incompatibility?

Hi! Yes, Pawn is not currently compatible with Italian WoW. Translating Pawn is quite a lot of work, but if you don't mind some tedious trial and error, you can find out more about what it takes here:

The other likely case is for quest rewards. If your game client hasn't gotten the name and stats of an item from the server by the time that it shows up on-screen, then Pawn won't be able to add the green arrow icon on top of it. If you don't see the arrow on a quest reward, but then when you hover over it and the tooltip has a green border and does have an icon on it, then that's what happened. (In that particular case, Pawn won't show any icons on any of the rewards if one of them wasn't downloaded in time, to make sure it doesn't give the wrong suggestion.)

Hi! Yes, there's a bug in which the Garrison Resources chest will show the upgrade arrow when you loot it IF the last thing that you won (where "won" means anything that showed the "you won!" popup) was an upgrade.

For now, whenever it happens, just imagine that you got some Complicated Wood instead of Simple Wood that will get used in your upgraded building. Exciting!
