Altoholic   Updated this week!   Popular! (More than 5000 hits)
Hi, my name is Thaoky, and I'm an Altoholic

Altoholic is an Ace 3 addon written for people who dedicate most of their time to leveling alts, and who want to have as much information as possible in one addon. The main feature of the addon is the search functionality which allows users to search their alts' bags or loot tables in an Auction-House-like frame (see screenshots). All this with multiple-realms/accounts support.

About the addon & the author

I've been playing WoW since the European release, and I used to rely on addons like character viewer to check my alts' inventory, but since it was more or less abandoned and not always stable for me, I decided to write an addon myself and to improve the search feature as much as I could. I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I do

The addon has been in development since December 2007 and was officially released in late March 2008. It's still not final, and although it has considerably evolved since the initial release, there are still a lot of things I haven't had time to implement yet.
Please note that this is my first addon, and that English is not my native language.

Features:

- Languages supported: enUS, frFR, deDE, esES, ruRU, zhCN & zhTW.

- Account-wide data summary:
  • Characters' talents: Full talent trees & glyphs are supported for both specializations.
  • Money, /played, rest xp for each character, subtotals by realm, and grandtotals for the account.
  • Bag usage: see at a glance which characters should get bigger bags (bag size, free slots and types included)
  • Characters' skills: skill summary on one screen, namely the 2 main professions + the 3 secondary skills as well as riding. I may add more if there's demand. Profession cooldowns included.
  • Reputations: a list of all the reputations of the current realm's characters. You can see at a glance if all your alts are at least honored with Honor Hold if you want to get the new 2.4 blue PVP set. Suggestions on how to gring reputations will be available soon.

- View containers (bags, bank, keyring) of all alts, on all realms.

- Guild banks : You have 10 alts in 10 different guilds on the same server, all of them with access to a guild bank ? Not a problem, you can see them all here.

- E-mail: allows you to see which alts have mail without having to reconnect them. The addon will tell you when mail is about to expire on a character. Threshold configurable (up to 15 days). Multiple realm support as well. Mails sent to a known alt (one you've logged on at least once) will be visible in the addon without having to reconnect it.

- Equipment: See the equipment of the current realm's alts in one screen. Very useful when purchasing stuff for your alts at the AH. Multiple realms supported. Right-clicking any equipment piece will allow you to find an upgrade, this feature is similar to the official wow armory feature, and is quite performant, even though it doesn't match the accuracy of the official one.

- Search: the most important feature of the addon, it uses an AH-like frame to display search results. You can either search bags on the current realm, on all realms, or a loot table.
The loot table is a table based on AtlasLoot, but which contains only item id's, and therefore keeps memory usage minimal.

The Search menu allows you to find items based on their name (even partial), level, type or rarity, almost like at the AH. It is also possible to search known recipes.

- Quest Log: See the quest logs of all your alts, as well as an indication of which alts are on a specific quest. Clicking on a quest link in the chat log will tell you which alts are on that quest.

- Suggestions: Currently, only profession leveling suggestions are available when mousing over your current level in a specific profession. Suggestions are based on the leveling guides posted on the official US forums (credit goes to their respective authors). The addon also suggests you where to quest/grind xp depending on your character level.

Suggestions were also added for the most recent factions. More to come later.

- Auction house: You can see which auctions/bids you've placed with an alt without being logged in or being at the AH.

- Professions: You can browse all known recipes in a thotbot like frame (see screenshot).

- Mounts & Pets of all your alts.

- Achievements are tracked for all you alts (see screenshot).

- Guild Members: a list of your connected guildmates, along with their alts (if they're using Altoholic too), and their average item level. Clicking their AiL will also allow you to "remotely" inspect their equipment.

- Guild Skills: a list of altoholic users in your guild, along with their alts and direct profession links. All professions are available in one click.

- Guild Bank tabs: a list of altoholic users and the time at which they last visited the guild bank. If you haven't visited the guild bank for a few days, you can remotely update your local data without going to a capital city.

  Change Log - Altoholic
3.2.003 (16/11/2009)

- Fixed a compatibility issue with MrTrader (DataStore_Crafts)
- Added the character skill level in the recipe tooltip (in "Could be learned by ..")
- Fixed a Lua error in when trying to get the item count of a missing character.
- Fixed invalid reporting of the number of free bank slots.
- Added a counter in the achievements tooltip to show the amount of completed criterias, this is particulary useful for achievements like "Northrend Gourmet"
- Some achievement categories are now sorted in a custom fashion, rather than alphabetically, in order to show progressive achievements side by side.
- Achievements can now be linked into chat frames. (You will need to relog your alts at least once for this to work).
- Moved the option that manages the mail expiry threshold to DataStore_Mails. It is thus reset to 5 days for everyone, make sure to change it back to whatever you like in the options pane.
- Guild communication has been entirely rewritten.
The bad news is that backwards compatibility is not maintained (way too much work), meaning that you will not see your guild mates' data in the guild panes unless they upgrade to this version.
The good news is that the amount of data put on the guild channel has been decreased by around 30-35%, and as guild comm is now mostly managed by datastore, this will open doors for new features.
- Improved the "Guild Bank Tabs" pane:
- if you're playing in a guild where players use different localizations of Altoholic, you will now see all timestamps in the same format.
- Players who have more recent data than yours are now shown in yellow (the colour may change if I find something more suitable).
- Improved return mail support. If a guildmate returns a mail to one of your alts, you will be noticed immediately.
- Mail expiries are now checked 5 seconds after login, to slightly decrease the processing load at startup.
- Your alts' professions are now sent 5 seconds after login at a pace of 1 per 0.5 seconds, this also decreases the amount of info put on the network at startup. Same thing when you reply to someone else's login.
- Guild member professions will now automatically be cleaned after a patch, to make sure your database only contains usable links.
- Most money amounts are now displayed using money icons, some of them will remain as they were due to graphic inconsistencies.
- DataStore_Talents now scans talent tree reference only once per game patch, this saves some cpu cycles at loading.
- Fixed a lot of small bugs in a lot of places.

3.2.002b (28/09/2009)

- Removed the "Method missing" error message in DataStore, it now fails silently (it's mostly a debug feature).
- Added an option to display detailed guild bank counters (per tab). Disabled by default.
- Fixed a Lua error in the Auctions/bids panes.
- Updated the list of Feats of Strength.
- Added 3.2 pets.
- Changed the mysterious egg/disgusting jar timers from 7 days to 6 days 20 hours.
- Fixed a bug where the message "No player named xx is currently playing." could be spammed if a guildmate logged in & out too quickly.

3.2.002 (14/09/2009)

- Added early support for returned mails.
- Fixed a Lua error when trying to delete a guild bank.
- Changed the calendar warning options, you can now set different warning thresholds per event type.
- Added an option to disable name auto-complete when writing a mail (to prevent conflicts with other addons offering the same feature).
- The reputations pane has been redone. I'm still playing a bit with the icon colors, feel free to make suggestions/tests by changing the values in Frames\Reputations.lua
- Added a new pane for the currencies. They are still visible per character in the activity pane.

3.2.001d (24/08/2009)

More bugfixes.
- Removed an unnecessary blank line that sometimes appeared in the tooltip.
- Fixed mining ore/herbs counters being displayed twice when Informant is present (finally ).
- Fixed the detection of goblin AH (DataStore_Auctions).
- Fixed a Lua error when receiving a mail from a guildmate (DataStore_Mails).
- Fixed a Lua error when searching guild members professions. This was caused by LibTradeLinks expiry after a patch.
- Updated LibTradeLinks to the most recent version.
- Slightly modified the way calendar events are managed, in order to prevent a wall of text when multiple alchemy transmutes expire simultaneously.
- Several bugfixes in the calendar too.
- koKR partial localization (thanks Seashop !)
- Fixed realm deletion in the account summary.
- Declined invitations are now filtered out.

3.2.001c (14/08/2009)

- Moved mail expiry check back in OnEnable()
- Fixed 2 Lua errors when doing a search.
- Fixed a minor bug when viewing guild bank tabs on an unguilded alt.
- Fixed invalid counters when taking an attachment (DataStore_Mails).
- [frFR] Fixed an error when viewing certain talent trees (DataStore_Talents).
- Fixed a lua error when visiting the AH (DataStore_Auctions).
- [deDE] Fixed a lua error when scanning skills (DataStore_Skills).
- Fixed sorting alts by rest XP rate.

3.2.001b (11/08/2009)

- Fixed a Lua error in the quest log (DataStore_Quests).
- Fixed the option that scans the body of a mail or not (DataStore_Mails)
- Removed debug code when mousing over a talent.
- Gathered Ace & LPT libraries used by DataStore_* modules under DataStore (thanks AnrDaemon).
- Removed Ace libraries already provided by DataStore
- Fixed localization issues.

3.2.001 (10/08/2009)

YOU MUST DELETE your altoholic.lua in SavedVariables before using this version!

As of this version, Altoholic will be using the DataStore series of addons.
These small addons are responsible for scanning, storing and providing data to client addons.
Although I wrote them, they must be seen as independent projects which will offer numerous benefits, such as:

- Other client addons can use them, in order to save memory and processing time.
- Data is scanned and stored only once.
- Each module has its own saved variables file (DataStore_Containers, DataStore_Crafts, etc..), so a change in one DB will not impact the other.
- Scanning has been fine tuned in many places, ex: you can say goodbye to messages like "Recipes could not be read, please rescan"
- This will strongly ease the implementation of account sharing related features.

Other changes:

- Added the possibility to search guild members recipe (enabled by default). Ex: simply type "glacial bag" to see which guild members can craft it.
- Fixed the calendar to use server time instead of local time. Note that in order to determine the difference between these, the addon waits until time rolls over to the next minute, so in the first minute, values shown in the calendar will not take this offset into account. Warnings are now also triggered after this happened, rather than right after login.
- Added a small test to prevent a wall of text being displayed when a profession cooldown is available again.
- A lot of lua errors have been fixed.

3.1.003b (14/06/2009)

- Fixed FuBar icon issues introduced in the previous release.
- Fixed a lua error in the calendar pane when mousing over a day.
- Fixed a bug when scanning the talents of a low level alt (under lv 10). 10 mottled boars were rageously slain to fix this bug.

3.1.003 (12/06/2009)

- Finalized a massive code update started several versions ago, the goal is to facilitate the implementation of new features, so the effort was definitely worth it, even if it caused a small delay in my schedule.
- Brought a few changes that should address the issue of empty Account Summary/Bag Usage/Skills/Activity. Please let me know if this is still happening !
- Fixed a rare refresh bug that could trigger a Lua error in the recipes pane.
- Added an option to change the UI transparency.
- Added an option to change the UI scale.
- Fixed a bug when sorting alts on rest xp in the account summary (Thanks Dreamsmith !).
- Fixed invalid tooltip counters when mousing over an item in the mailbox.
- Updated zhCN localization (thanks ALADDINN).
- Updated zhTW localization (thanks NightOwl).
- Updated ruRU localization (thanks StingerSoft).
- Added ruRU suggestions (thanks StingerSoft).
- Added a calendar pane to track the following events: standard calendar events, profession cooldowns, raid timers, mysterious egg/disgusting jar.
- Localization update in order to comply with the CurseForge localization tool. A few large strings may need review in ruRU, zhCN & zhTW (those that are used as option tooltips).
- Fixed a bug with the option "Include guild bank count in the total count".

3.1.002b (05/05/2009)

- Better tracking of raid id's, they should hopefully no longer be reset at login.
- Added a workaround to the database conversion failing due to a partial DB corruption.
- Added a missing mount.
- Updated loot tables (mostly Ulduar).
- The tradeskill scanning code has been rewritten, it should no longer miss cooldowns or get wrong colors for recipes. Filters are no longer lost during the scan either. If it doesn't work perfectly now, I think I'll start crying like a baby
- Fixed a bug where some equipped items might not appear in the search results.

That's not quite true. People have written small addons that replicate the "block too big" bug, which also results in a client crash:
http://forums.wowace.com/showthread....933#post241933

There are also at least 3 threads on wowace that show addons like CowTip triggering the issue:
http://forums.wowace.com/showthread.php?t=17001
http://forums.wowace.com/showthread.php?t=14666
http://forums.wowace.com/showthread.php?t=12076

I ditched a lot of addons during TBC to get away from that issue (especially Rock-based addons like CowTip) and I'm now more leery of addons that use a lot of resources.

I won't bother because I've now tested Altoholic and determined that it does indeed provide the feature despite the fact that nothing about tooltips is explicitly mentioned in the addon description. Had the word "tooltip" appeared anywhere in the addon description, I wouldn't have asked the question.

Uh, no, there is nothing about standard game item tooltips mentioned in the addon info. I'm talking about the type of functionality that WhoHas provides, since WhoHas does not support Altoholic.
I can't understand, what you are trying to say. Can you please put it in simple words, without a reference to something outside of the discussion?

Again you misunderstand what I said. Altoholic says it has an item browser to help you find upgrades. I have an addon named Pawn that lets you use custom weight tables (much better than GearScore!) to evaluate individual pieces of gear. It would be awesome if the two were integrated (e.g. a Pawn value column on in the Altoholic gear browser).
It's all subjective and tend for consideration.
I'm using RatingBuster with a hand-made script to ease it's usage.

I'm happy enough with Armory at the moment that I can afford to wait for answers. I was at work when I posted yesterday, where I'm not able to access WoW. I installed Altoholic from Curse last night but it wasn't packaged properly and wouldn't run (was missing the Datastore dependencies), and I didn't have time to try again after re-downloading it from here.
It's understandable. Please don't take my comment as a personal offense.

Thanks for the reply.

I tried Altoholic for myself last night and noticed a similar memory footprint for 8-10 characters. 4MB is pretty acceptable for the amount of data being tracked.

Well, depending on the complexity, it might be worth adding that into DataStore directly, if DataStore modules can provide LDB feeds, it would further simplify the life of authors

Help would really be welcome because I'm starting to have a hard time keeping up with the load of work alone

Actually, I myself use AtlasLoot (and AtlasLootReverse, for the tooltip info. Altoholic's is just ... too out of date, sorry mate) + Pawn. I don't even know if Altoholic's browser works with all those weird mp5-patterns ingame, I know it didn't about half a year ago
Actually, it's true that it might not be too obvious, but to find gear upgrades, you have to be in the equipment pane, otherwise, you wouldn't see the stats. I have plans to further improve the search feature, but again, it's quite big and I can't say when that will happen.

also, when synchronizing those two accounts, it sometimes messes up bigtime, probably losing some data. you can see it when hovering - again - specific items, where it completely loses all tooltip lines. sometimes you can "fix" it by using a selective part of data to transfer.
imagine this:
character a from account A requests b from B to share his data. while synchronizing, hovering any item is fine. when synchronizing is done though, the tooltips will fail and provide no information but create heaps of error messages.

with the top one avoided (if-then-else query), this still pops up when hovering an item. first it was when hovering cobalt ore, now it's frostweave bandages.

it might as well be that i tempered around with your getcharacterclasscolor function as that threw errors as well .......
I'll dig this in detail to see what's going on. Thanks for reporting.

I saw your comment about the "block too big" issue, nothing to be afraid of, I'm always extra cautious when it comes to memory allocation (I'm a C programmer too).

Yes: Banks, guild banks, mailbox, AH.

3. I see that Altoholic has features that help you find equipment upgrades. Have you thought about implementing weight tables or some kind of Pawn integration to help the user better evaluate gear?
The equipment upgrade takes your item level and/or item stats (tooltip parsing) and finds upgrades in a way that is similar to the official armory, try it or look at the screenshot, it's pretty explicit.

I haven't used Pawn, and I do not intend to review this feature in the near term (not before 4.0, since blue will change the way stats are treated).

4. Does Altoholic provide any LDB data feeds? You mentioned that it tracks "money, /played, rest xp for each character, subtotals by realm, and grandtotals for the account" so it seems like it would almost be redundant to run AllPlayed with Altoholic.

Thanks!
No data feed, only a launcher. At best, I could implement the feeds in DataStore modules, but I'd clearly need info on that (sorry, no time to dig for it myself right now).

Issue is: It would be good if we could have a kind of planner along with mere tracking functionality.
Adding a wishlist/planner/todolist, whatever the name, has been on my mind since the very beginning. It's still something I want to do, and the calendar was a step into this direction. There will be more calendar related features in the coming months, and that one will be part of it, I just can't say when.

My todolist keeps growing, and I think that there's enough on it to keep me busy for at least another year

recently, your datastore addons spam my error-addon quite a bit ...

[12:02:58] ...AddOns\DataStore_Characters\DataStore_Characters.lua:80: attempt to concatenate field '?' (a nil value)

i merged my data and that of another account and now receive errors en masse ... dunno if it's connected

also, when synchronizing those two accounts, it sometimes messes up bigtime, probably losing some data. you can see it when hovering - again - specific items, where it completely loses all tooltip lines. sometimes you can "fix" it by using a selective part of data to transfer.
imagine this:
character a from account A requests b from B to share his data. while synchronizing, hovering any item is fine. when synchronizing is done though, the tooltips will fail and provide no information but create heaps of error messages.

with the top one avoided (if-then-else query), this still pops up when hovering an item. first it was when hovering cobalt ore, now it's frostweave bandages.

it might as well be that i tempered around with your getcharacterclasscolor function as that threw errors as well .......

I guess you've never hit the (in)famous "block too big" client crash issue. Let's just say it's a factor for me.

Uh, no, there is nothing about standard game item tooltips mentioned in the addon info. I'm talking about the type of functionality that WhoHas provides, since WhoHas does not support Altoholic.

Feel free to download and install GearScore.

Your condescending tone rubs me the wrong way but I do appreciate the reply nonetheless.

Hmm... I can remember this has been mentioned before, but now, I got to it once again, now on a more serious matter.

Issue is: It would be good if we could have a kind of planner along with mere tracking functionality.

I.e. i'm leveling a number of alts, and they are in need of obtaining a certain level of reputation from specific factions.

2. Can Altoholic add info to item tooltips regarding which alts (bags, mailboxes, personal banks, etc.) / guild banks have how much of that item?

3. I see that Altoholic has features that help you find equipment upgrades. Have you thought about implementing weight tables or some kind of Pawn integration to help the user better evaluate gear?

4. Does Altoholic provide any LDB data feeds? You mentioned that it tracks "money, /played, rest xp for each character, subtotals by realm, and grandtotals for the account" so it seems like it would almost be redundant to run AllPlayed with Altoholic.
The only feed it provides is the LDB launcher to show/hide addon window.

Thanks!
Seriously, I think, these, and many other questions could easily be gone in a few moments, once you give addon a try...
