Altoholic  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 7.0.006
by: Thaoky [More]

Hi, my name is Thaoky, and I'm an Altoholic

Altoholic is an Ace 3 addon written for people who dedicate most of their time to leveling alts, and who want to have as much information as possible in one addon. The main feature of the addon is the search functionality which allows users to search their alts' bags or loot tables in an Auction-House-like frame (see screenshots). All this with multiple-realms/accounts support.

About the addon & the author

I've been playing WoW since the European release, and I used to rely on addons like character viewer to check my alts' inventory, but since it was more or less abandoned and not always stable for me, I decided to write an addon myself and to improve the search feature as much as I could. I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I do

The addon has been in development since December 2007 and was officially released in late March 2008. It's still not final, and although it has considerably evolved since the initial release, there are still a lot of things I haven't had time to implement yet.
Please note that this is my first addon, and that English is not my native language.

Features:

- Languages supported: enUS, frFR, deDE, esES, ruRU, zhCN & zhTW.

- Account-wide data summary:

  • Characters' talents: Full talent trees & glyphs are supported for both specializations.
  • Money, /played, rest xp for each character, subtotals by realm, and grandtotals for the account.
  • Bag usage: see at a glance which characters should get bigger bags (bag size, free slots and types included)
  • Characters' skills: skill summary on one screen, namely the 2 main professions + the 3 secondary skills as well as riding. I may add more if there's demand. Profession cooldowns included.
  • Reputations: a list of all the reputations of the current realm's characters. You can see at a glance if all your alts are at least honored with Honor Hold if you want to get the new 2.4 blue PVP set. Suggestions on how to gring reputations will be available soon.

- View containers (bags, bank, keyring) of all alts, on all realms.

- Guild banks : You have 10 alts in 10 different guilds on the same server, all of them with access to a guild bank ? Not a problem, you can see them all here.

- E-mail: allows you to see which alts have mail without having to reconnect them. The addon will tell you when mail is about to expire on a character. Threshold configurable (up to 15 days). Multiple realm support as well. Mails sent to a known alt (one you've logged on at least once) will be visible in the addon without having to reconnect it.

- Equipment: See the equipment of the current realm's alts in one screen. Very useful when purchasing stuff for your alts at the AH. Multiple realms supported. Right-clicking any equipment piece will allow you to find an upgrade, this feature is similar to the official wow armory feature, and is quite performant, even though it doesn't match the accuracy of the official one.

- Search: the most important feature of the addon, it uses an AH-like frame to display search results. You can either search bags on the current realm, on all realms, or a loot table.
The loot table is a table based on AtlasLoot, but which contains only item id's, and therefore keeps memory usage minimal.

The Search menu allows you to find items based on their name (even partial), level, type or rarity, almost like at the AH. It is also possible to search known recipes.

- Quest Log: See the quest logs of all your alts, as well as an indication of which alts are on a specific quest. Clicking on a quest link in the chat log will tell you which alts are on that quest.

- Suggestions: Currently, only profession leveling suggestions are available when mousing over your current level in a specific profession. Suggestions are based on the leveling guides posted on the official US forums (credit goes to their respective authors). The addon also suggests you where to quest/grind xp depending on your character level.

Suggestions were also added for the most recent factions. More to come later.

- Auction house: You can see which auctions/bids you've placed with an alt without being logged in or being at the AH.

- Professions: You can browse all known recipes in a thotbot like frame (see screenshot).

- Mounts & Pets of all your alts.

- Achievements are tracked for all you alts (see screenshot).

- Guild Members: a list of your connected guildmates, along with their alts (if they're using Altoholic too), and their average item level. Clicking their AiL will also allow you to "remotely" inspect their equipment.

- Guild Skills: a list of altoholic users in your guild, along with their alts and direct profession links. All professions are available in one click.

- Guild Bank tabs: a list of altoholic users and the time at which they last visited the guild bank. If you haven't visited the guild bank for a few days, you can remotely update your local data without going to a capital city.

IMPORTANT NOTE: As with every new expansion, many things have changed in the API, and it is REQUIRED to clear your Saved Variables for the addon.
This means cleaning the following files in \WTF\Account\<your_account>\SavedVariables : Altoholic.lua & All DataStore*.lua

There WILL be bugs if you use your old files without cleaning them first.
Some fixes to work around API changes are too time consuming, so cleaning is required. A meager price to pay once per expansion.

7.0.006 (03/08/2016)

- DataStore: Fixed guild identification when the character is on a different realm than the guild.
- Grids: Updated Archeology races and items for Legion.

7.0.005 (31/07/2016)

- DataStore: Fixed a lua error when getting AutoCompleteRealms.

7.0.004 (31/07/2016)

- Fixed issues related to connected realms (guild bank, tooltips, etc..)
IMPORTANT NOTE: a guild bank will not be scanned if it's on a realm that is not known by the add-on.

So if you have characters belonging to a guild from another realm, and you have no character on that realm, you will have to create a character on that other realm, and log him on once, just to identify the realm.

The API provides absolutely no way of matching a short realm name to a long realm name.
If your realm is a small name without spaces (like 'Dalaran'), then this might seem like a non-issue for you, but it makes it impossible to know precisely to which realm a guild belongs.
Basically, my workaround is about making the addon know that "Marécage de Zangar" is also known as "MarécagedeZangar" by getting rid of spaces.

This is an extremely imperfect solution, and I sincerely dislike it, but the API does not help in any way.
The solution should hopefully work across all localizations, but I can't promise anything.

Wanna help ? Relay this topic on the US forums :

and kindly bump..

7.0.003 (27/07/2016)

- Profession level cap raised to 800.
- Fixed the counts not being shown in the item tooltip when mousing over a craft reagent in the tradeskill UI.
- Fixed a Lua error when clicking on a recipe link in the chat log.
- Fixed a Lua error when checking the guild bank tab.
- DataStore_Talents: Rewrote scanning of talent information, UI will come back in a future release.

7.0.002 (20/07/2016)

- DataStore_Garrisons: Fixed a few Lua errors.
- DataStore_Mails: Fixed the invalid attachment counts in the tooltip (note: you will have to visit the mailboxes that have a wrong count to correct it, it's not a display error, it's a database error)

7.0.001 (19/07/2016)

- REMINDER : CLEANING YOUR SAVED VARIABLES IS MANDATORY FOR 7.0 (YES I'M SHOUTING ! :D)
- Various fixes to support 7.0 API changes.
- Glyph UI has been removed.
- Tabard UI has been removed.

Note : I've been extremely busy with big projects & responsibilities at work in the past months (year ? .. almost!), but 21/07 is national day in Belgium so it's a long weekend over here, I'll have time to follow-up on 7.0 and release extra changes.
I expect the rest of the year to keep quite busy given our current planning, hopefully 2017 should be quieter (and I'll have a long holiday in December, yay !).

A few remarks about this, as the answer is not as easy as black or white.

1) Suggestions are just that: suggestions, it's not the ultimate perfect path to leveling a profession, it's an indication of what you can craft along the way to level up a profession rather easily, but nothing says you should stick to it 100%.

2) I don't see yellow recipes as a bad way to level up, it is of course not as efficient as orange recipes, but the return rate can be acceptable at times. I have 9 level 70, and thus 18 professions, 15 of which are at 375 and the last 3 are >360, and believe me, I have used yellow recipes with a satisfying success rate quite often since the game has been released.

3) Green recipes are indeed not advised, but from time to time, it's interesting to invest on a specific craft until it turns grey because it will be used later for higher level crafts. I know quite a few items are mentioned in the suggestions database.

4) I didn't make up all the suggestions, they come from the US forums where guides have been compiled for most professions, I referenced my sources in suggestions.lua. That said, they're not 100% similar to what you'll find on the forums, asI often merged multiple sources, and added a few hints based on my personal experience. I've play tested some of them from 0 to 375, and adjusted them along the way, but you will understand that I did not do that for all of them, so yes inconsistencies may exist.

All this to say: suggestions are probably not perfect, and I'm willing to improve them, but I need more than a report saying that they're not appropriate. If you feel something can be improved, please be specific, like:

"in profession x, you say that item y should be crafted up to level from 140 to 150, I would rather advise item a to 145, and b to 150".

I incorporate as much user feedback as I can in this project, and I rarely say no if a suggestion is appropriate, so never hesitate

Just noticed, that Altoholinc suggesting items to level crafting professions.
Good feature, but worst suggestion.
Crafting *yellow* recipe for leveling just a bad idea, worth only if you need tons of this item. Ding every 2-5 crafts.
Crafting *green* item - plain waste of resources, you'll get level every 10-15 crafts.
And it suggesting Heavy Grinding Stone to 150 Blacksmithing...

Hello there

Mounts & pets are already in the wotlk version. Regarding the roster, this is a good idea, I could probably do something similar to the equipment pane. I'll have to think a bit about how it would look best, but I remember this in DKP addons, so it should be possible. Added on the todolist, but for a bit later. I'm waiting for 3.0 to go live to fix remaining issues (hard to code on beta realms..) and to start working on data sharing

Not everyone uses AucAdv + ETT (I don't), and having the character count is appreciated by many, so I do not see it as an unwise option.

It is easily possible to embed your data into ETT by hooking to EnhTooltip.AddHook, and since ETT uses smaller font size, it will take up less space, and may eventually improve overall usage experience ^_^
Look at EnhTooltip\Tooltip.lua for more information.
I have only one note - please allow 'position' to be user-defined... [/b]
Adding this info to ETT has already been suggested a while ago, that's something I intend to look into in the future. Thanks for the additional info though

@CrazX: I still have a pvp pane on my todolist. In fact, it was about to be implemented when the tokens/currencies were announced, and I decided to wait to see them live before deciding how I would bring them into the addon, so I think this will come up after 3.0.2.

@AnrDaemon: For the recipes, there have been a few issues lately for some users, and they're fixed in the next version, which should be released in a week or so when patch 3.0.2 goes live (Oct 14 if it doesn't change).

1) the gap in the tooltip: normally there's only one blank line between the standard tooltip info and what I add. About ETT, it's something I have to look at.

2) tooltip counters: because of time constraints, I think that's something I'll leave up to you

3) about the containers, yes, that's something I'd like to improve. I think both views currently in the addon will remain unchanged, and that I'll add one or two other views depending on the suggestions I get. I have gathered a few interesting ones up to now, but haven't made up my mind yet.

4) I do intend to add more features to the containers views, such as filters, by class, rarity, etc.. As I said quite a while already, there's unused space in several frames, and I clearly want to use it

5) about the * in a recipe tooltip: I'm not sure it's relevant since the info is already assumed to be there. I'll have a look at it, but I can't make any promise on this one.

@all: The version I'm working on is quite stable now, I think I'll release a few days prior to patch 3.0.2 (around Oct 11 probably). The update will be on this page and not on the wotlk addon page. The first release will also happen here, and not via the automatic updaters since wowace and curse are not 100% operational right now (they weren't yesterday, haven't checked since).

suggest - pvp honor kills

I'd like to suggest a feature for listing honor kills + honor available on each char & total honor kills + honor for all chars combined.

Since I have so many 70's... aka an altoholic, it's interesting to know that all my chars combined have 180,000 kills and 500,000 honor to spend. I currently use a very simple addon that does this, but I think some other users would be interested in this.

Not very good, but.. well.. good enough. It still have problem retrieving known recipes unless I specially show that recipe in profession interface. But other than that, it's working ok.

Now to some suggestions. I have my hard disk under heavy examination by chkdsk, so there only two I can recall.

First is the way item count present in tooltip.
1. HUGE gap between main tooltip text and Altoholic entries. It could be not that bad, if there are no ETT frame attached to almost any item tooltip.
2. A bit unfriendly (to me, yep) string itself. I would prefer something like
Code:
<Charname>: <total>/<bank> in bank
(well, I can change this thing for myself, hehe... so you could safely ignore this number)

Second thing is the way items displayed when browsing containers. I don't mind the default "by container" option, but I think it could be improved, let me show some suggestions for "all-in-one" mode.

First, it should not be "all items without division by containers", it should be "all types of items I have, divided by type of storage" - equip/inventory/bank/keyring. If I have 20 stacks of Copper Ore, 5 on alt and 15 in alt's bank, it should be one Copper Ore in inventory and one Copper Ore in bank. With total count for each storage location displayed as possible. 3 digits pretty much visible, more - you can just show a "99+" for count and display real values in tooltip.

Second, I though about some kind of sorting of items by, kinda, item class... if that's at all possible.

Umm, one thing more just came to my mind. If I have item count in tooltips disabled, could it still notify me if my alt, which would be able to learn recipe, actually have copy of that recipe in his/her posession? Attach a star to the string, like
Will be learnable by <altname> (<skillevel> of <recipelevel>)*
probably?

Yup, that's the problem, make sure to clean your SV file. Sorry I forgot to mention that.

Well, this new build works. Forced me to completely reload client, but that's ok... it works now.

Thanks for that head-up. Will give it a try.

I usually never use any fort of autoupdaters for critical things, such as WoW addons

May I explain some suggestions to the addon interface?

EDIT: Can't register on WowAce forum, it did not sent me confirmation email.

It's a beta that never got officially released (except via the updaters), but it's stable. Should fix your issue.

To Amander too: same thing, I didn't ask you which version you were using, but if you're using .015, I also suggest you give a try at .016
I'm using the lastest version you put on the WoWAceUpdater. And I know, I can't wait for 3.0.2 either. ^.^ If it's fixed, that's fine! I just wanted to be sure I hadn't somehow corrupted my LUA file somehow.
