Gossipmonger
Version: 0.82
by: Tuhljin [More]
New in v0.8: The Gossipmonger Filter system has been implemented! This allows those familiar with basic Lua to create their own custom "filter" functions to automate the selection of gossip options and quests. See Filters.lua for instructions (API) and examples.

Those poor NPCs. It seemed to them as if no one was interested in what they had to say any more. Show them some love: Hear them out before you carry on with your business once in a while! In some cases, you could be missing out on important or interesting details about the NPC or the world around it.

Automatically skipping greeting/gossip text is convenient, but what if you are actually interested in seeing what the NPC has to say first? Or perhaps even better, what if you want greeting text to be shown alongside the vendor window/bank/whatnot? This addon will let you do just that!

By default, Gossipmonger makes skipping gossip work the same way that WoW normally handles it (skipping ahead if there's only one option to select and it isn't a quest or conversation option) except that a new window appears at the same time as the window for the vendor/bank/whatever-it-is which shows the gossip text you would otherwise have missed. However, if you hold down Shift, there is no skipping ahead, letting you see the gossip text in its normal window. You can change the modifier key to Alt or Ctrl instead of Shift if you wish. You can also change the settings so that Gossipmonger will only skip ahead when you hold down the modifier key, defaulting to opening the normal gossip window.

Another option is to have the addon inform you in one of two ways when you skip something: Scrolling Combat Text's message frame (if you have that addon) and/or the default chat log.

v0.82
- Added an option to change whether the Gossip Bubble will reappear after using the quest-jumping feature to select another quest.
- Quest-jumping now works with NPCs that use the Quest Greeting method instead of the more typical Gossip Frame. (This method appears in most ways the same as the more typical method so players may not have noticed a difference except that quest-jumping didn't work with some NPCs.)
- Fixed an issue where the Gossip Bubble didn't behave properly after quest-jumping when using certain settings.
- Fixed an issue where filters were not ignored properly when declining a quest.
- Fixed an issue where the Gossip Bubble would sometimes disappear when quest rewards are shown.

v0.81
- Updated to work with WoW 3.1.

v0.8
- Quest-jumping feature added! When enabled, a Gossip Bubble window appears when you are talking to an NPC about a quest if another dialog option was offered by the NPC, allowing one-click "jumping" from the quest displayed to the other option.
- The Gossipmonger Filter system has been implemented! This allows those familiar with Lua to create their own custom "filter" functions to automate the selection of gossip options and quests. See Filters.lua for instructions (API) and examples.
- The color of NPC names in the Gossip Bubble is now based on the NPC's reaction to you (friendly, neutral, etc.).
- The Gossip Bubble frame no longer captures mouse wheel activity unless the text and options displayed are enough to warrant scrolling.

v0.7
- Updated for WoW 3.0.

v0.6
- The contents of the Interface Options panel are now not created until they are needed.

v0.5
- The Gossip Bubble's "Goodbye" button now closes the Arena Battles window if it is open, as was intended.

v0.4
- Fixed an issue where innkeepers couldn't properly trigger the Gossip Bubble.
- The gossip icon now appears next to SCT messages triggered by Gossipmonger.

v0.3
- Increased width of gossip text area slightly to avoid cutting off edges of letters when talking to some NPCs.

v0.2
- Initial public beta release.

I'm around, and I'm willing to look into getting the addon up-to-date, but I'll admit that my motivation to do so is lower than it could due to the basic concept of Gossipmonger (showing hidden dialog due to autoselection stuff) not being as "useful" as it used to be, what with all the NPC dialog in the game created in the past, what, four years, having been designed with that autoselection stuff in mind. The assumption that you're using autoselection even goes to the point where some dialog shown is actually "wrong": I don't remember any specifics off hand, but I've seen things like filler text that it'd make no sense for the NPC to say, or text about how you can't shop at this NPC yet even though you actually can (maybe the text is like "The village is burning! I can't sell you anything while I have to battle this fire!" but the shop option is actually there; see, Blizzard counted on you only seeing the text when the option wasn't available, and it's only available after you complete the quest to put out the fires).

Anyway, again, I'd be willing to look into it, but it's not a big priority and if it'd take a lot of work, it becomes even less of a priority. Sorry.. But hey, if you've got error messages to report, by all means, open a ticket. Tickets help me not forget reported issues. Thanks!

I keep getting an error about it trying to reference something that doesn't exist. Is the author around? I don't know if it's worth posting the error message.

Somnifer: I've looked into it and it's definitely an issue you'll have to take up with simpleMinimap's author. Gossipmonger simply utilizes Blizzard's system for placing frames like the Character or talents panel. When I moved the minimap to the bottom-left side of the screen, as you did, moved the quest tracker and such to the right, locked the minimap, and then reloaded the interface, I noticed the problem you reported. Frames are being placed on top of each other. It's important to note that this problem applied equally to the character panel and the talents panel even with Gossipmonger disabled. If I unlock the minimap again and move it back to the top-right, those frames are placed properly again.

I noticed in the comments section of the page you linked that another user was also having this issue. You ought to add to the discussion there. Try to give details, like I did above. (Heck, go ahead and quote me.) Good luck.

Yes, it's definitely the interaction between GossipMonger and simpleMinimap that's doing it. It takes a /reloadui or logging out to have effect but the GossipMonger frame won't draw further right than the leftmost border of the minimap.

I went so far as to disable all addons except GossipMonger and simpleMinimap to test this.

Thank you! Spread the word.

As for your question, it does sound like another addon isn't playing nice with Gossipmonger. I'm going to need you to go through the process of elimination to find out which one it is. Just one by one disable your addons to see which one it is (or if you've got a lot, maybe start with half of them or whatever, so long as you get it down to just one offender in the end). I'd start with simpleMinimap since you said you got it recently, and then any others you might have added or updated in the last week. I took a quick look at that addon's code and no obvious problem jumped out at me but it'd be best if you make sure it's not the culprit by disabling it.

This is a great addon, and I wouldn't be surprised if Blizzard adopted this behavior in the default UI. It just seems so natural, like this is the way it should be.

One question: Is there any way to move the GossipMonger frame, or at least reset it to the position it was by default? For some reason mine appears to have migrated to the left and now appears over the shop/flight master frame. ><

I guess (now that I think of it) I could just delete the savedvariables. I think I'll go do that right now. >.>

Update:

Okay, tried deleting the variables and that didn't work. Took at look at them and noted no position variable so figured it must be something else interfering with GossipMonger. So I took a screenshot for you to see, in case you already have an idea.

Incidentally, I don't know if it's significant or not but the last addon I installed was simpleMinimap

I noted that the GossipMonger frame just happens to line up exactly with the left edge of the minimap.

Here's the SS. It's a work-in-progress! I know it's ugly! XD

Thanks again for the great addon.

I'm planning on creating a custom filter system for Gossipmonger that would let advanced users determine how to handle such situations, perhaps providing for them a function similar to Blizzard's ChatFrame_AddMessageEventFilter. Then, as a separate, optional download, I'd release some preprogrammed filters that could be easily toggled off and on using the Interface Options. Sound good?

It would be nice if you add an option to skip greetings even when there is more than 1 option. Oh, and load on demand options would be also a great feature.

Cheers!

Thanks, everyone, for the comments and the praise. It's always good to know that your work is appreciated. I'm trying to keep Gossipmonger pretty simple and to-the-point, but if you have any suggestions, feel free to let me know.

I've been wanting something like this for so long. Thank you.

Still mad at Blizzard for just taking this out outright instead of putting in a toggle.
