SimpleSpam

SimpleSpam was written for use on english speaking realms.

SimpleSpam is a simple, yet effective anti-spam filter (gold, powerleveling, buy-boe, guild, etc). It uses a point based violation score to determine if a message is spam or not. Currently uses around 15kb of memory, so it has an extremely small footprint.

The first offense for each character will show in your chat log in this format:

Blocked spam from [character]. Violation Score of #.

You will only see this message once. Any score greater than 6 is most certainly spam, and score greater than 4 is blocked. It takes quite a bit (or something blatantly obvious) to reach a score of 4, much less 6+.

You can click on the notice to see the offending message.

Please let me know your experience with this add-on so I can continue to improve it.

If a spam message gets past the filter, send me a text copy or screenshot of the message either via comment or PM and I'll add it to to the filter.

Important Notes

The method used to block the majority of spam might block messages that are not spam if the language being used includes an excessive amount of accented letters (áëîöù for example). If a message contains 6 or more accented letters, it will most likely be blocked. This isn't an issue on English speaking realms, I cannot speak for other languages though.

If you find that messages are being blocked, you can lower the violation score per accented letter to help better serve your language. You can do this by changing the second line of the SimpleSpam.lua file.

Simplicity. I was looking for an anti-spam addon before I began to write this, and I couldn't find one that just worked. They all included extra features to report the player, limit by level, block guild spam, GUIs to change settings, huge complex filters, lots of memory usage, lots of CPU usage. There wasn't a simple and effective anti-spam addon.

I tried to use BadBoy, but it blocked almost none of the spam (on Blackrock Horde).

The second largest feature is accented letter penalty. Gold spammers have gotten smart, and figured out a way to get past the current (until now) spam filters, thats using accented characters.

For example: gold for sell != göld fòr séll

Currently SimpleSpam does this in a less than optimal way, but fussing with two part UTF8 characters in Lua is a bit tricky (lua doesn't actively support UTF8, even though WoW does, I'm still working on this). ´ + e = é (thats 2 characters, even if it looks like one, so Lua treats it so, very tricky)

BadBoy tries to do this to a degree, but doesn't quite cover it.

I've been using this for about two weeks so far, and I haven't seen a single spam message get past the filter.

The addon uses almost no CPU and only about 15kb of ram.

Why? They are spaming in english on German relams too. Haven't seen any german goldspamer yet

If you could send me some screenshots of normal realm chat with some spams I could work on allowing other languages. I only speak english so I can't really do much for other languages.
