PlayerScore / GearScore  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 5.0.01
by: Mirrikat45 [More]

PlayerScore Overview
PlayerScore is the next evolution of GearScore and aims at providing a utility infinitely more useful then just the score of a player's equipment. PlayerScore provides raid leaders with a wealth of instant knowledge such as

  • Complete Raiding History - Allows you to view an easy to read breakdown of a player's raiding history including every boss kill and current top-tier raiding progression.
  • Equipment Layout - Well designed layout allows you to manually check a player's gear quickly and easily. Advanced item tooltips make spotting bad items even easier with flags for enchantments, gems, and reforging.
  • Primary Stats - Shows you a break down of the stats a player is gearing for. This provides a great way for raid leaders to make sure player's aren't stacking spell pen, or have 200% hit rating, or DKs gearing for Agility.
  • Talent Spec - View a player's current build. You can also flag talents as bad for a specific spec and have PlayerScore notify you in the future when a player is using those talents.
  • Automatic Character Auditing - PlayerScore will display a list of flags for when players have missing or bad gems & enchantments; bad talent specs; missing equipment; wearing equipment for another spec or class; using pvp items; or riding TRH.
  • Player Ratings - PlayerScore uses our online servers and custom anti-abuse technology to allow players to rate eachother on a thumbs up or down basis. This allows you to easily spot players who don't get along well with others or just plain suck.
PlayerScore also provides a set of very extensive options. Almost every single feature can be disabled to save memory or increase performance. You can also disable features to save space and only provide the information you care about most. You can also run the addon in "Lite Mode" which will disable the entire GUI showing only information on player tooltips.

* Modified Item Score calculations to determine PvP Item Score of an item.
* News tab has been scrapped to make room of a future feature.

* Masterloot mode will no longer display players from previous instance groups.
* Character Claiming for
* Quick Rate Mode! In previous versions of the addon, it would become difficult to rate players at the end of a dungeon because they would quickly leave the party.

The new Quick Rate Mode attempts to remedy this by displaying a small window whenever the user exits a 5-man dungeon. There is now an option in the options menu that can disable this feature. You can also type "/psrate" at any time to open the window and rate party members. Due to previous limits within addon, only players who have been scanned by the addon at some point since the last login will appear in the quick rate frame. Finally, all players who join your party at some point during the instance will be listed in the Quick Rate Frame. This means players who join and are then vote-kicked or abandon the instance will appear for you to rate.

The Quick Rate Mode will display each Player's Name (Colored by Class), their GearScore, and Thumbs Up/Down for rating. In addition an Icon will be displayed for viewing the negative and positive factors in a player's score.

*Quick Scan mode has doubled in speed over the last version. Total is now 4 times faster then the original. As a result, it has been enabled by default.

You are right. And this was done years ago, if i'm not mistaken.
You know this site, right?
However, some judgements more accurate than another.
But they are no more than estimation of a player potential.
It's up to raid leader to judge players he/she invite. If raid leader is a GS-whore, no amount ot arguments could reason him/her.
Heck, what we're talking about? Blizzard added achievements, GS is a thin shade of a runing factor what achievements made to the game world.

If they take preventative measures to being scored via another addon, I assure you that they know the possible consequences of "deceiving" a the score. If not, then they are naive. But also realize that if their score isn't high enough, the end result could be the same anyways.

But there is this thing called called "player intelligence" that just doesn't calculate well into addons. Believe it or not, some people value this over some number generated based on some guy's opinion of what's "good" and are willing to help them get geared up to replace some other douche who happens to have a 5k+ GS but is dumb as a box of rocks. If a player wishes to be judged on this, they should have the option to avoid being "scored".

Let's face a common agreement here: this addon can make or break groups, even entire guilds. It can make or destroy potentially good players all because of a stupid number. It forces a player to be judged a certain way based on an opinion and gives them no option to avoid it. It is rapidly becoming the driving force of the game, which I find quite pathetic to those who use this number as a sole base to judge a player.

GearScore's intentions are clear: to become the dominate factor in raids and parties. If someone tries to avoid it, then it'll be worked around. The author has made it clear that everyone will stand HIS judgement, whether they like it or not.

Solution is simple. Give players the freedom to not be scored if they so choose. It's their right.

Point made, discussion over. PM me if you wish to continue debating this obvious fact.
This person is tagged as both a staff member and a mod for the forums, and yet is behaving like a troll and using bad language. A mod is supposed to KEEP the peace, not antagonize or Fan the Flame. I very much think this person should immediately be removed from the staff and moderation priviledges revoked, as they do not show they deserve the power or responsibility they have.

My bad its at curse tg we dont need staffers here like that.

"Like that"? Like what? Oh, he has an opinion and you don't agree, how terrible of him. He makes a good point, the intention of GearScore is very clear. The author could have easily solved this long ago by adding an option to block showing your GearScore. That is a win-win situation, and I have no idea why it hasn't been implemented yet. After all, if players wanted to have access to the option they would have to download GearScore.

The implications of GearScore have been debated many times. People are correct in that the author should not take the blame, but this is only true in the sense if the issue is unpreventable or if he corrects the issue. Neither of those are the case, and that is why people are complaining. He stated that this was not the intent of GearScore, but he is enforcing anyway.

That however, is not what GearScoreBreaker is designed to do. Its sole purpose is to harass players and completely corrupt their GearScore database beyond use. This is intentionally malicious behavior and is potentially against the TOS/EULA.
GearScoreBreaker would not even exist if players had an alternative to "GearScore 5k+ only". Especially since you need 5k GearScore for 10 man Flame Leviathan, right?

now, back to business...

I don't know if this is in combo with another addon, but I get FPS lag when I mouse over comparing gear, for ex. at a vendor. I think you may be in a tight loop when mouseover of other gear.

edit: here is some further info. the version from 01-13-2010 02:26 AM doesn't do it.

Spec Specific Scores listed at 0 in item tooltips appear in black text. Against the default black background is impossible to read, prehaps the standard vendor-junk grey would be more appropriate.

What are these most recent updates doing? The ones with no posted changelog? The glitches that occur with conflicts between this and Elitist Group (that the EG author's doing workarounds for), plus the undocumented changes has made me feel I need to disable GearScore until I know what's going on.

Lol, there are no changes worth noting. I just re-uploaded the addon with BonusScanner having the TOC file changed from 30200 to 30300

As for the claims that GS interferes with Gem information, that doesn't make sense. I don't do anything with interfering with gems. Obtaining gem information is a pain in the rear because of the way Blizzard removed gem info from item links.

EDIT: I removed my wall of text... for now until something is answered.

Ok, I found GearScoreBreaker, which after examining the code appears to does what the Mirrikat has "approved" of, simply give a false number to GearScore. However, in GearScore.lua:

Code:
--Blocks GearScoreBreaker 1.2b
and in the recent changelog here:

Code:
3.0.17
Blocks GearScoreBlocker 1.3
Typo or am I not looking at the right addon?

After a search of all the files in GS, I find no instance of GearScoreBlocker. But have found GearScoreBreaker, in which it simply returns the score as "Invalid". I'll admit I haven't followed the full logic (code is a bit of a mess, no offense), but looks harmless so far.

I'm trying to get all angles on this before continuing this argument, but at this point I'm not seeing any "full database destruction" that people have been claiming, just a reply of a random number between 5500 and 6500 sent to GearScore when a request is send via the addon channel, which is supposedly "allowed".

Not throwing accusation at this point. Just looking for clarification.

You have to look at their coding more closely.

They have the event "CHAT_MSG_ADDON" registered to catch all incomming GearScore messages.

They then listen to every message, create a random GearScore/iLevel for that incomming message, then re-broadcast it back to everyone in the guild.

This means if I see "BOB" in Dalaran I would sync Bob's data with my guild. GSB would see Bob's data incomming and capture it, change the data, and then rebroadcast it. Everyone else who has GearScore in the guild catches the corrupted data and over-writes the original database entry I just sent them.

This in effect makes it so that nobody in the guild would ever have a correct database entry for any player so long as GSB was active.

The way I blocked it in 3.0.17 is by refusing to accept updated database entries unless that data fits into a specific time frame. SO basically people in my guild would receive the data about Bob from me, then when they get the data from GSB the addon says, Oh, I already have this information a second ago, I don't need to update it again. I also ignore all data older then the current entry, and all data from "the future" as well.

the "--Blocks GearScoreBreaker 1.2b" was a commented change log from 3.0.16 I belive, I didn't add the "Blocks GearScoreBreaker 1.3.0" comment into the file.

I wrote an article about it here: http://gearscoreaddon.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=87

So in a nutshell, people have no choice in being scored, as I originally said? I assure you that I'm not supporting such sabotage, but it seems that a simple check for UnitName("player") instead of just simply altering EVERYTHING coming through should be feasible, but not so sure if it's even possible now that the addon doesn't accept old/future data (which I'm looking at how that's even possible since all updates would have a future date).

If that's the case, then may I make a suggestion that may appease the masses and kill some (if not all) of the heated controversy:

Make GS communicate and score only those who have GS installed. Other players who do not wish to be "scored" will have the option for just that by simply continuing what they're doing; opting not to use/be a part of a mod by exercising their right to not install it. Meanwhile the elitist "@$$hats" (seeming the common term) responses/requirements will still be viritually uneffected.

"You're GS is too low, GTFO" --> "You don't have a GS, GTFO"
"Looking for 5k+ GS for 10-man levi, PST" --> "LFM 10-man levi, PST if you have a GS" or simply unchanged "LFM 10-man levi, PST with your GS"

So on and so on....

This would make sense if GearScore had multiple variations running around. So far, GearScore is the only GearScore. The other methods such as be.imba, wow-heroes, elitist group, etc... all put -some- measurement of you having to actually make a judgement yourself instead of basing it on a number. If your argument is that you're not basing your judgement on a number, then I direct you to the post you made just after this one:

This is exactly my point, and probably most others' points too. Most people don't care if Ulduar only needs 3850 for 10 man. They want 5000. You made the same mistake as these people by labeling Ulduar as 3850 in the first place. It's nice to have a quick assessment of a player through a number that is relatively close to a content's needs. But the majority of players would rather be carried or don't want to give lower geared players a chance. While it has some merit that people are bad if they have a low GearScore, it's not always the case. Nor is it always the case with players who have high GearScores meaning they aren't bad. It's not difficult to carry people through most progression, and the carried players are the ones who are usually the most needy. AKA: GearScore 5k+ Flame Leviathan or you don't go.

TLDR: GearScore is used inappropriately in most cases, can be solved easily by adding GearScore blocking from the addon itself.

Edit: Here's some interesting information:

The problem is that achivement info isn't ready on mouseover, and requesting it from the server on mouseover cuases a player to drop severly in FPS and connection. However, I can add it to the GearScore Display window. But Can I just keep it a secret option?

Using multiple transmissions causes everyone to shit their pants and QQ about imaginary lag that they themselves make up.

That's a link to a podcast interview with Arxkanite/Mirrikat45. He discusses his intent of GearScore and how it backfired. The hilarious and interesting part of the two quotes above (from a thread on his own forums) is that it directly contradicts his statements. Or, if you're into anarchy, it falls directly into place as he follows suit with it's own destructive agenda.

Just curious ChaosInc.... are you going to carry your crusade against mods that "score" people, to other addons like Elitist Group? It does essentially the exact same thing (it scores you), but it takes scoring several steps further.

How about damage meters like Skada, Damage Meters, Recount, etc etc? Ever been kicked out of a group because your damage was too low? Those addons are scoring you as well. Why no crusading posts for those addons, requesting that the authors make a "dont show my damage or healing numbers" option?

Even if the author here of Gear Score, decided to add a "hide my score" button, a raid leader will simply inspect you, see you're blues and greens, and tell you "Sorry, but you are not geared enough". There is literally no difference here.

You either have the appropriate level gear to do the instance, or you dont. Most people dont like carrying others through instances. They expect every member to pull their weight. And im sorry, even if you have never gotten hit by a charge, always run fires away from the raid, never miss an interupt, make perfect switches for Vortex, kite Anub with no errors.... you are still a henderance to the raid, when you are underperforming by a pretty large margin, because you lack the gear.

The part i find most humorous about all these complaints... is that you can literally gear up from greens to a 5.2k Gear Score, in a little over a week just by doing randoms and buying badge gear. If you are too lazy to do some randoms for a week, to gear your character up appropriately for the instance you are getting rejected for, you deserve it.

P.S. Blizzard gear scores you as well. Try que'ing for a random heroic in greens / blues right when you hit 80 on a character. BLIZZARD forces you to reach a certain Item Level (ya, gear score), before it lets you participate in the instances.

This addon does the same thing.
