PlayerScore Overview
PlayerScore is the next evolution of GearScore and aims at providing a utility infinitely more useful then just the score of a player's equipment. PlayerScore provides raid leaders with a wealth of instant knowledge such as

You know this site, right? However, some judgements more accurate than another. But they are no more than estimation of a player potential. It's up to raid leader to judge players he/she invite. If raid leader is a GS-whore, no amount ot arguments could reason him/her. Heck, what we're talking about? Blizzard added achievements, GS is a thin shade of a runing factor what achievements made to the game world. |

The implications of GearScore have been debated many times. People are correct in that the author should not take the blame, but this is only true in the sense if the issue is unpreventable or if he corrects the issue. Neither of those are the case, and that is why people are complaining. He stated that this was not the intent of GearScore, but he is enforcing anyway.

now, back to business...
I don't know if this is in combo with another addon, but I get FPS lag when I mouse over comparing gear, for ex. at a vendor. I think you may be in a tight loop when mouseover of other gear.
edit: here is some further info. the version from 01-13-2010 02:26 AM doesn't do it.

Spec Specific Scores listed at 0 in item tooltips appear in black text. Against the default black background is impossible to read, prehaps the standard vendor-junk grey would be more appropriate.

What are these most recent updates doing? The ones with no posted changelog? The glitches that occur with conflicts between this and Elitist Group (that the EG author's doing workarounds for), plus the undocumented changes has made me feel I need to disable GearScore until I know what's going on.

As for the claims that GS interferes with Gem information, that doesn't make sense. I don't do anything with interfering with gems. Obtaining gem information is a pain in the rear because of the way Blizzard removed gem info from item links. |

EDIT: I removed my wall of text... for now until something is answered.
Ok, I found GearScoreBreaker, which after examining the code appears to does what the Mirrikat has "approved" of, simply give a false number to GearScore. However, in GearScore.lua: Code:
--Blocks GearScoreBreaker 1.2b Code:
3.0.17 Blocks GearScoreBlocker 1.3 After a search of all the files in GS, I find no instance of GearScoreBlocker. But have found GearScoreBreaker, in which it simply returns the score as "Invalid". I'll admit I haven't followed the full logic (code is a bit of a mess, no offense), but looks harmless so far. I'm trying to get all angles on this before continuing this argument, but at this point I'm not seeing any "full database destruction" that people have been claiming, just a reply of a random number between 5500 and 6500 sent to GearScore when a request is send via the addon channel, which is supposedly "allowed". Not throwing accusation at this point. Just looking for clarification.

You have to look at their coding more closely.
They have the event "CHAT_MSG_ADDON" registered to catch all incomming GearScore messages. They then listen to every message, create a random GearScore/iLevel for that incomming message, then re-broadcast it back to everyone in the guild. This means if I see "BOB" in Dalaran I would sync Bob's data with my guild. GSB would see Bob's data incomming and capture it, change the data, and then rebroadcast it. Everyone else who has GearScore in the guild catches the corrupted data and over-writes the original database entry I just sent them. This in effect makes it so that nobody in the guild would ever have a correct database entry for any player so long as GSB was active. The way I blocked it in 3.0.17 is by refusing to accept updated database entries unless that data fits into a specific time frame. SO basically people in my guild would receive the data about Bob from me, then when they get the data from GSB the addon says, Oh, I already have this information a second ago, I don't need to update it again. I also ignore all data older then the current entry, and all data from "the future" as well. the "--Blocks GearScoreBreaker 1.2b" was a commented change log from 3.0.16 I belive, I didn't add the "Blocks GearScoreBreaker 1.3.0" comment into the file. I wrote an article about it here: http://gearscoreaddon.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=87

If that's the case, then may I make a suggestion that may appease the masses and kill some (if not all) of the heated controversy: Make GS communicate and score only those who have GS installed. Other players who do not wish to be "scored" will have the option for just that by simply continuing what they're doing; opting not to use/be a part of a mod by exercising their right to not install it. Meanwhile the elitist "@$$hats" (seeming the common term) responses/requirements will still be viritually uneffected. "You're GS is too low, GTFO" --> "You don't have a GS, GTFO" "Looking for 5k+ GS for 10-man levi, PST" --> "LFM 10-man levi, PST if you have a GS" or simply unchanged "LFM 10-man levi, PST with your GS" So on and so on....

As long as Blizzard allow player inspection, such addons will continue to exist. |

TLDR: GearScore is used inappropriately in most cases, can be solved easily by adding GearScore blocking from the addon itself. Edit: Here's some interesting information: http://gearscoreaddon.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=109
http://www.brigwyn.com/2010/01/14/episode-20-thl-podcast-special-edition-interview-with-the-creator-and-developer-of-gearscore/ That's a link to a podcast interview with Arxkanite/Mirrikat45. He discusses his intent of GearScore and how it backfired. The hilarious and interesting part of the two quotes above (from a thread on his own forums) is that it directly contradicts his statements. Or, if you're into anarchy, it falls directly into place as he follows suit with it's own destructive agenda.

Just curious ChaosInc.... are you going to carry your crusade against mods that "score" people, to other addons like Elitist Group? It does essentially the exact same thing (it scores you), but it takes scoring several steps further.
How about damage meters like Skada, Damage Meters, Recount, etc etc? Ever been kicked out of a group because your damage was too low? Those addons are scoring you as well. Why no crusading posts for those addons, requesting that the authors make a "dont show my damage or healing numbers" option? Even if the author here of Gear Score, decided to add a "hide my score" button, a raid leader will simply inspect you, see you're blues and greens, and tell you "Sorry, but you are not geared enough". There is literally no difference here. You either have the appropriate level gear to do the instance, or you dont. Most people dont like carrying others through instances. They expect every member to pull their weight. And im sorry, even if you have never gotten hit by a charge, always run fires away from the raid, never miss an interupt, make perfect switches for Vortex, kite Anub with no errors.... you are still a henderance to the raid, when you are underperforming by a pretty large margin, because you lack the gear. The part i find most humorous about all these complaints... is that you can literally gear up from greens to a 5.2k Gear Score, in a little over a week just by doing randoms and buying badge gear. If you are too lazy to do some randoms for a week, to gear your character up appropriately for the instance you are getting rejected for, you deserve it. P.S. Blizzard gear scores you as well. Try que'ing for a random heroic in greens / blues right when you hit 80 on a character. BLIZZARD forces you to reach a certain Item Level (ya, gear score), before it lets you participate in the instances. This addon does the same thing. |
