Iconic - Simple Macro Icon Search

Version: 1.0
by: Conj [More]

What it does
Iconic integrates into Blizzard's default Macro UI. There are no slash commands, no setup, and no preferences to mess with. Simply open up your macro window with /macro, write your macro, name it, then when you go to choose your icon use Iconic's search bar (left of the "Okay" button) to help narrow things down!

Iconic currently uses the default file names for the macro icons in its search. Because of this, it's very limited (still surprisingly helpful though). Mouse over any icon in the popup selection area to bring up a tooltip that lists the icon's tags. Only single word search strings will work at this time.

Improvements I'm currently working on:

  • Expanded search library with more useful tags.
  • More robust search features.
  • Extra icons not included in the default selection.
  • Code improvements and better compatibility with other mods.
Iconic is my most ambitious mod to date. It's by no means perfect, and possibly a bit over my head, but I'm continuing to add to it and refine it. I look forward to any and all constructive feedback. Thanks, and I hope you enjoy!

Well, after running fine from the beginning of Cataclysm, its now become bugged & inoperative in the new WoW 4.3 live patch. Was nice while it lasted.

Open up the Blizzard Macro frame (running no other macro mods) and the following error is thrown:

Code:
["message"] = "Iconic-1.0\\Iconic.lua:93: attempt to call global 'GetNumMacroIcons' (a nil value)\n<in C code>: in function `LoadAddOn'\nInterface\\FrameXML\\UIParent.lua:274: in function `UIParentLoadAddOn':\nInterface\\FrameXML\\UIParent.lua:313: in function `MacroFrame_LoadUI':\nInterface\\FrameXML\\UIParent.lua:415: in function `ShowMacroFrame':\n<string>:\"*:OnClick\":3: in function <[string \"*:OnClick\"]:1>\n",
            ["type"] = "error",
            ["locals"] = "(*temporary) = \"Blizzard_MacroUI\"\n(*temporary) = <table> {\n}\n(*temporary) = <function> defined =[C]:-1\n",
            ["session"] = 4976,
            ["counter"] = 1,
Create a new macro. In the icon selection frame, the text entry area Iconic provides at the bottom of it is still visible. But then enter a search term (i.e. "Priest"), press Enter and the following error is thrown up along with the search not filtering any icons at all:

Code:
["message"] = "Iconic-1.0\\Iconic.lua:15: 'for' limit must be a number\n<string>:\"*:OnTextChanged\":2: in function <[string \"*:OnTextChanged\"]:1>\n",
            ["type"] = "error",
            ["locals"] = "self = IconicFrame {\n 0 = <userdata>\n}\nuserInput = false\n",
            ["session"] = 4977,
            ["counter"] = 6,

Yes, an absolutely fabulous mod. And no, its not "broken" in WoW 4.0. It works just as well as it did in WoW 3.x using the default Blizzard macro icon box. It shows all tooltips for every icon and search works properly.

If you are running some third-party macro mod, it may not be compatible with Iconic (see below for one example). Or your macro mod used to be, but it needs updating for WoW 4.x.

From experience, though, can verify that Iconic doesn't work properly in combination with LargerMacroIconSelection in WoW 4.x. That mod works fine alone, but Iconic only returns tooltips in the first two rows of icons in that mod's larger box. Any icons beyond that give no tooltips. Also, the search returns results that are combined with a set of icons that shouldn't be in the results. Etc.

With the default Blizzard macro icon box, Iconic still works great.

Ah, yes, I see how they work together now. I was typing in the wrong bar... I somehow missed that the search bar was down below. I guess i was too overwhelmed by MacroBank's big UI to see a minor change, lol. Thanks, that works pretty well in a round-about but easy enough way. /Cheer!

EDIT 10/12/2010: As patch 4.0.1 is out today, just wanted to let you know I still want to use your mod so I hope you update it whenever you can because there is at least one fan out there for sure!

Okay, I uploaded the .zip file with icons at RapidShare; it's 154 in total, use at your leisure. ^^ Unfortunately I can't remember where I got it from way back then, so I can't give proper credit.

I also tested those icons in-game, and they're not really labelled properly so they're not used optimally with Iconic. When I hover over them I see they got names like prof 3 and random 1. Not really handy when you want the fishing pole icon and can't even find it with 'fish'.

And ehrm.. if you were to decide to extend this addon to guild bank tabs and equipment manager icons after all, I'd love you to bits. Seriously. I don't use macros a lot, but I do have 3 GM toons and several dual-specced characters with which I have to browse through all my icons often. I'll just keep dreaming for now.

Stupendous!

This mod has literally changed my life. Gone are the days of crying myself to sleep after having to settle for sub-standard, inappropriate icons. This mod is sheer icon-selection orgasmo-nirvana! It's sheer utilitarian simplicity leaves me breathless after every use, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it incorporated into the default UI in the near future. Three cheers for Iconic!!!

Just played with MacroBank a bit. Very cool mod! I was almost considering going that route with Iconic, but I guess I don't have to now.

It looks like Iconic and MacroBank don't conflict at all. In theory, you could simply create your macro with the default UI, select your icon with Iconic, then import it to MacroBank to store it/send it to friends and other toons. In fact, I think that's what I'll be doing personally. (Or I suppose: create it in MacroBank, send it to your macros, select the icon with Iconic, then send it back into MacroBank...)

Since they don't seem to conflict, and since you can use both in tandem, I don't think I'll mess around with integrating into Odlaw's UI. I'm going to focus on other improvements to Iconic first. Thanks for pointing me to a great mod. Hope that answers your request!

Love the idea of it and have been wishing for something like it though. The very WORST part of making a macro, imho, is searching for the right icon!
Thanks! Couldn't agree more. It's why I made the mod.

No problemo, glad you like! Thanks for the comment and the kind words. Basic search terms and categories do seem to work best. Things like: rogue, spell, fire, disease, mount, etc even colors sometimes work, but not very well.

I'm not positive, but I believe the class specific abilities/spells are incomplete. For example, an icon originally made for one class, but used in another's talent tree, probably would only come up for the first one if you searched both classes. When I get the extra search tag database working I think cross-referencing class icons will be my first addition.

Will this work with Macro Bank?
Hmm, I'm not sure. I designed Iconic so that it would slip seamlessly into the default UI. I used secure hooking to modify as few of the existing functions as possible. Figuring out how well my code plays with the mods of others is important to me. I'll check out Macro Bank. Are there any other related mods I should be looking at?

Two questions..

1) does this also work for the icons you need to select for the guild bank tabs and the sets in the equipment manager? Or is it just macros?

2) I once downloaded a set of icons from someplace and use them just as regularly as the standard ones. Will they be included, or will they be left out?

As an afterthought.. if you're interested you could perhaps include that set of icons in your addon, as some sort of extra feature. I can send you the .zip if you like.
1) Right now it just fits into the macro UI. I was tossing around the idea of making Iconic a generic UI that I then can use to tap into any Icon selection instance (whether it's Blizzard or someone else's mod) but a complete stand alone UI is a bit over my head at the moment. It was enough of a pain just setting up a single edit box! A full stand-alone replacement is definitely my intention for some kind of Iconic 2.0. For now though, I think I'll stick to hooking it directly to the UI elements.

2) Custom icons are definitely a cool possibility. I'm not positive, but I think Iconic can handle any extra icons you might put into the Interface\Icons folder as long as the files are named logically. I'll be sure to double check. Feel free to send me any links you might have to interesting icon packs and I'll see if I can't include them somehow.

Thanks for the comments and questions! Glad people seem to like my little addon
