MessageBoard  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 0.60a
by: ybe [More]

Due to several reasons, this project is up for grabs. I would like someone to move the project forward. It will in its entirety be transfered to you, and I will provide support for the code written so far. I would like to apologize to everyone for this mishap, but life can't be controlled. You will need to have knowledge of WoW LUA and XML. Send me a message, and we'll take it from there,

MessageBoard

It's a guild-wide message-board. That means it is a forum, like you know from web-based discussion-sites. The difference is that this is a 100% in-game WoW addon. It does not need a web-server, or a server-character that is always logged in, or external software, or anything special.

It is no secret that it's often difficult to get guildies to log in to the web-site to check messages. It's usually only the "hardcore" people that bother on a regular basis. This addon will help you. It requires no technical skills at all, beyond the ability to use a simple forum. Just install and play.

Changes from v0.55 RC1
[added] Custom layouts/skinning (see the file "layout.txt")

Requirements
You need to:
- install the addon
- be a member of a guild
(easy, eh?)

Usage
- To open MessageBoard, press the minimap icon.
- Hover the mouse over the minimap icon for positioning-help.

Features
- Custom layouts/skinning (see the file "layout.txt")
- Supports announcements, sticky topics and normal topics.
- Users can set an avatar.
- Administrators can be assigned by officer's note.
- The text-editor supports inserting item-links by dropping an item at the cursor.
- The database size is regulated by automatic pruning, by means of message-count.

Please note
It is easy to forget that you are not using a regular forum, but it's all within the limits of the WoW game. This means that when you log in, you must allow MessageBoard 2 to 3 minutes to update data. The time will vary dependent on several factors. But the more messages, the slower it updates. To not bore you with technicalities, suffice to say that it is because you are not using a real web-server and slow systems must get a chance too. The addons talk to eachother, so the more people in the guild that have the addon, the better.

Administrators
An admin is needed to set MessageBoard options, like message-limit for database pruning (auto-removal of old posts) and to set the main-page Administrator Message. The admin can also edit and delete any post. An admin is assigned by typing "#MB:A" (without quotes) in the officer's note in the WoW guild-roster. He or she will also need access to read the officer's note (in the WoW guild-roster rank settings) for the addon to be able to read it. Write-permission is not needed.

You'll need to add an option to erase posts...., some crappy message have been without any text and we cannot erase it, so probably we should erase the WTF folder, we're going to use this addon in a 25man PVE roster.

Some suggestions like better reply separator will be great

Nice addon! It works well to be a beta

Good to hear that it basically works

To delete posts, you need an admin. An admin can be assigned by typing #DB:A in the officers note. Check the administrator paragraph of the description. Due to some WoW issue I haven't been able to get around yet, the admin will have to (after being assigned admin) open the guild-roster before the addon can read the officers note. When that is done, the admin priveleges are active. It's just two quick presses on the shortcut button. Call it a login, if you will

The admin will now have two new buttons (edit, delete) to handle the post currently being viewed.
Sadly, this "login" will have to be performed after any relog. But - just two quick presses of the guild-list shortcut (one for open, and one for close).

About the reply separator...
I know. I may add a reply and quote button. Since all posts to a thread goes in order of the time it was posted, the quote shouldn't be needed much.
But I still haven't quite decided on how the quote should look. Suggestions are welcome

Would like an option to be free of officers and whatnot so that this addon can be used in it's entirety by players that ARE in the guild but not officers. In our case, our 10-man/instance group (which only occasionally has officers in it) needs to be able to assign the raid leader (not an officer) admin rights. As we are the only people in the guild who would use this addon to keep each other updated of the status of our raids, using officer notes and the Blizzard UI is quite pointless (and impossible).

I have tried #DB:A in the officer note and there are no options when enabled. The #MB:A does give options but I can not delete Topics or add a message to a topic if the messages have been deleted from that topic.

I don't see anything another user posts when others are offline, even when the original poster logs in.

Am having this problem as well.

My avatar isn't being saved after I log either.

I see the problem, and I will have to think about that one for a bit. The reason it is done like this is that it will require someone "trusted" to edit/delete posts.
If this was easily available to anyone, it would be abused quite easily.
Someone with a grudge could make a serious mess if edit/delete was simple to do for anyone.

But I'll think about it. I may have a solution.

This is now a known issue and will be fixed shortly. It only seem to involve empty topics, as far as reports tell me.

Incidently, these empty topics will be deleted when the auto-pruning kicks in, but that could take some time.

I will get this fixed for the next release.

Is this a problem for this one user and everyone else works okay?
Do you mean that everything this one user posts is not viewable by you, or is there some other problem?

Check the reply about empty topics a couple posts earlier.

If you press "Save" and the icon appears next to your posts after that, then it is saved. If it is missing after you log back in, the best bet would be that something prevents WoW from saving data to the MessageBoard datafile. I have heard about occations where missing addon data is a problem under Vista. If this is the case, you need to check out info on this as I am not able to help you with that.

The next option is that it is a bug, in which case I would need to know if the icon ever appears next to your posts or if something else happens or does not happen.

Is it so that all you basically need is to have a post (or several posts) that should be editable by anyone? Becasue that could be made quite easily, and could be assigned by the author of the post.

In effect, the author of a particular post would be able to check the "allow anyone to edit this post" option at the text-editor.

This option would be nice for public posts where people are to add themselves to a list or similar things.

Yes, it would be a valuable option indeed.
