MapNotes  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: v5.16.30200
by: Cortello, Telic

v5.16.30200

Sorry peeps, but I'm effectively retired.

I have removed the PayPal buttons from WoWInterface, which makes it easy to do - and I am TRYING to remove them from Curse & WoWUI also, which seems to be a lot trickier.

I may come back to WoW some time next year - but probably not...

If anyone wants to take over development then you can e-mail me at the contact e-mail below, and I will cooperate as needed.

Sorry, and thanks for all your support over the years.

Description
***********

Adds a note system to the WorldMap helping you keep track of interesting locations.
MapNotes(Fan's Update) also provides a Plugin interface for other AddOns to take advantage of the note making ability. AlphaMap(Fans Update) uses this interface to allow Note creation on AlphaMap Maps of Instances, BattleGrounds, and World Boss Maps. This version of MapNotes comes with in-built support for creation of notes on Atlas maps, also using this Plugin interface.
For these purpose MapNotes offers the following main functions:
1. Marking notes on the WorldMap
2. Showing one of these notes on the MiniMap (see MiniNote)
3. Allows any other AddOn to use MapNotes note creation ability to mark notes on frames within their own AddOn :
- Marking notes on AlphaMap (Fan's Update) Instance maps
- Marking notes on Atlas maps

"/tloc" can be used to toggle this AddOns minimap coordinates instead of Thottbott's minimap coordinates.
NOTE : PLEASE still use "/mn -tloc xx,yy" to place a Thottbott marker on the map. "/tloc" ONLY toggles Minimap Coordinates.

Should be compatible with both Cartographer, although you may no longer be able to create notes on the map with the in-built functionality provided by that AddOn - only with the functionality provided by MapNotes (Fan's Update).

********
Features
********

[Slash Commands] - NOTE : See separate file "LegacySlashCommands.txt" for old style commands
================

/mapnote OR /mapnotes OR /mn
Use without any other parameters to see which version of MapNotes is installed, and access the list of available Slash Commands.

Otherwise can be used to insert a Map Note by a slash command (which you can create in the Send Menu), for example, to put a note at the Entrance of Stormwind City on the map Elwynn Forest:

"/mapnote k<WM Elwynn> x<0.320701> y<0.491480> t<Stormwind> i1<Entrance> i2<> cr<ciphersimian> i<0> tf<0> i1f<0> i2f<0>"

NOTE: The above would all be on one line Description of the identifiers:

k<#> - Key based on the map name from GetMapInfo() prefixed by "WM " (English name on all clients - never localised) Varies for other AddOns using the Plugin functionality
x<#> - X coordinate, based on the GetPlayerMapPosition() function
y<#> - Y coordinate, based on the GetPlayerMapPosition() function
t<text> - Title for the MapNote
i1<text> - first line of text displayed under the Title in the MapNote (Info 1)
i2<text> - second line of text displayed under the Title in the MapNote (Info 2)
cr<text> - Creator of the MapNote
i<#> - icon to use for the MapNote, AddOns/MapNotes/POIIcons/Icon#.tga
tf<#> - color of the Title, AddOns/MapNotes/POIIcons/Color#.tga
i1f<#> - color of the Info 1 line (colors as above)
i1f<#> - color of the Info 2 line (colors as above)
mn<1> - (optional) If included, then a value of 1 will set the note as a mininote also. Any other value and the note will NOT be set as a mininote.

/mn -allow OR /mn -a
Allows you to receive the next note, even if you have disabled receiving in the options. If invoked with no parameters, it will toggle the current state.

/mn -automini
Shows the next note created (using any method) as a MiniNote and also puts it on the WorldMap. If invoked with no parameters, it will toggle the current state.

/mn -allmini
Toggle all MapNotes off/on as Mininotes
(Keybinding also available)

/mn -nextmini
Shows the next note created (using any method) as a MiniNote and also puts it on the WorldMap. If invoked with no parameters, it will toggle the current state.

/mn -minionly
Like the previous command, but doesn't put the note on the WorldMap.

/mn -minioff
Turns the MiniNote off.

/mn -tloc tbX,tbY
Sets a "Thottbot location" on the map. Use it with no arguments to toggle it off.
See the Section on Formatting of X,Y Coordinates

/mn -q [icon] [name]
Adds a note at your current location, icon and name are optional (icon any number from 0 to 9, AddOns/MapNotes/POIIcons/Icon#.tga)
If no [name] is passed, then the Note will be named based on the MiniMap Text, and the second/third lines will be populated with more zone information and/or the default QuickNote text.

/mn -qtloc xx,yy [icon] [name]
See the Section on Formatting of X,Y Coordinates
Adds a note on the map you are currently on at the given thottbot location, icon and name are optional (icon any number from 0 to 9, AddOns/MapNotes/POIIcons/Icon#.tga)

NEW SLASH COMMANDS IN MapNotes(Fan's Update)

/mn -s [search text]
If you want to search for a note, to see if one exists, or where it is, then you can use this command, and MapNotes will print out a report in the chat window, displaying the names of all maps which have a note containing that text

/mn -hl [note name]
If you have lots of notes and want to clearly identify a single one on a map, or if you want a certain note to remain highlighted, then use this command and they will be displayed with a green circle around them.
If there are several notes with that name or containing that text, then they will ALL be highlighted.
The note name does not have to be case sensitive, and doesn't have to be an exact match - all notes containing the [note name] text will be highlighted.
If the EXACT NAME is specified (not case-sensitive), the note will also be marked as a MiniNote on the Minimap

/mn -mapc
Toggle the display of Player and Cursor Coordinates on the World Map
Control-Left-Click and drag the coordinates to move them to a different position on the World Map if you are not happy with the default.

/mn -minic
Toggle the display of Player coordinates below the Minimap.

/mn -t [icon] [name]
Creates a quicknote at the Player's current location if the Player has no target.
If the Player does have a target, then it will create a note for that target at the Player's current location, icon and name are optional (icon any number from 0 to 9, AddOns/MapNotes/POIIcons/Icon#.tga)

/mn -m
Creates a note for the Player's target at the Player's current location.
OR Merges the details for the Player's current target in to a Map Note that has already been created at the Player's current location.
MUST have targetted a Player/NPC/Mob for this to work.

/mn -scale [0.5 - 1.5]
The size of MapNotes Menus and Frames are now fixed no matter what the scale of the World Map or other AddOn Map being used.
This command can be used to change the default size of MapNotes Menus and Frames if the user finds it too small or large.
The default value is 0.7
Therefore "/mn -scale 1.0" will make the Menus and Frames appear larger than they do by default.

/mn -undelete
Will undelete the last deleted MapNote.

IMPORTANT NOTE ON THE IMPORT FUNCTIONS BELOW
All of the functions below are mainly designed for people who have just installed MapNotes (Fan's Update). If you have been using this version of MapNotes for some time already, and have your own notes, then these functions may overwrite your existing notes. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

/script MapNotes_ImportCarto()
NOTE: only works with English localisation currently
If you want to move from Cartographer 2 to MapNotes, then log in to the game with both AddOns enabled, ust the above command, after which you will receive notification in the chat window on how many notes have been imported.

/MapNotes_Import_MetaMap
If you want to move from MetaMapNotes to MapNotes, then log in to the game with both AddOns enabled, use the above command, after which you will receive notification in the chat window on how many notes have been imported.

/MapNotes_Import_AlphaMap
If you have AlphaMap installed, and want to convert the in-built Instance and World Boss notes in to MapNotes notes, then use the above command, and you will see a message in the chat window informing you of how many notes have been imported in to MapNotes.
This does NOT import Battleground notes by default, as AlphaMap's in built Battleground functionality works best without MapNotes overlaying the BG Objectives.
NOTE: You don't have to import notes from AlphaMap, to make MapNotes on AlphaMap Instance/Battleground/WorldBoss maps. You can create any notes you like manually.

/MapNotes_Import_AlphaMapBG
As mentioned above, the basic "/MapNotes_Import_AlphaMap" command does not import Battleground notes by default. If you do want to import AlphaMap Battlegournd map notes, then use this command to do so.

/MapNotes_Import_CTMapMod
If you want to move from using CTMapMod to MapNotes (Fan's Update), then log in to the game with both AddOns enabled, use the above command, after which you will receive notification in the chat window on how many notes have been imported; Then log out, and disable CTMapMod.

- <Alt>+<Shift>+DOUBLE Right-click on a note to quickly delete it.

- <Control>+<Shift>+Right-click will create a temporary blue Group note on a map
If created on a World map, then it will also be displayed in the Minimap for you to track
If in a Raid group, then the note will be shared with other Raid members who have MapNotes installed
Otherwise, if in a Party, then the note will be shared with the Party members who have MapNotes installed
Otherwise, its just your own quick temporary marker

Re: Sorry, some Newbie questions

There isn't a limit on notes, and they shouldn't be disappearing.
Although "MapNotes (Fan's Update)" should be compatible with MetaMap I can't fully guarantee it, as MetaMap has its own noting system and was developed from MapNotes so if it still has any of the same old function names then problems might happen...
Do you use WoWKB or MetaMap_KB thingy ? These AddOns have the potential to delete chunks of MapNotes at a time...

If you want to send my your Saved Variables MapNotes.lua file, I will try to sanity check it and see if I can see any obvious errors.

[email protected]

When you log in with MapNotes you could try the following command in the chat window

/script MN_DataCheck(true)

and see if any notes suddenly come back ?

Options now also include the ability to auto-note Blizzard POIs as MapNotes LandMarks.
When the Landmarking Option is turned on, then Guard Directions to NPCs will be stored as MapNotes.
<Control>-Right click on a map, Open the MapNotes Options, there should be an Auto-note landmarks checkbox....

Hope these things help,

Telic,

I've read through all the documentations and postings and and sorry, I'm still confused about a few points which I hope somebody will be kind enough to clarify for me:

1: I've noticed that after laboriously having created some 50 notes in i.e. STV, when I return (in the "not too distance future") they are still all there, and also visible to my alt's, but suddenly one dismal day, they will all be gone! WHY???
a) Is there a limit on the total number of notes you are allowed to make? So that as you keep visiting new regions and adding new notes, at some time (when adding notes in i.e. Eastern Plaguleand, MapNotes simply and without any warning or indication erases all your previous notes, painstakingly made in STV)?
b) If so, what is the limit? And can you expand that somewhere? If so, how?
c) Or is there a sell-by-date restriction, so that after x number of days MapNotes decides that those notes are old and not worth keeping anymore and just deletes them?

2: I've also noted that on some occasions, when I enter a new region, a notification comes up:
"<MapNotes> 11 Landmarks Noted in Felwood".
I'm not quite sure if this is a function of MapNotes or MetaMap. If MapNotes can do that, WHERE or HOW do I make that list of POI's that is automatically added/loaded?

I know that it is probably stupid questions, revealing what a hopeless newbie I am, but I still hope someone will have mercy on me and help me out here.

Yours sincerely
DaneNordic

Changes in v3.44.20100 from v3.43.20100

========================================
Changes in v3.44.20100 from v3.43.20100
========================================

Again, BIG thanks to Morac for testing and indeed fixing some of the issues detailed below :

- Raid/Party notes can now be set on Plugin frames/maps e.g. Atlas or AlphaMap Instance maps
<Control>-<Shift>-Right clicking on a Plugin map will set a Group note on that map that will be shared with other group members - obviously they will require both MapNotes and the other AddOn to actually see the note, but it is still safe to set Raid/Party notes when other members do not have the required AddOns.
(i.e. Group notes will be shared with Raid members if you are in a Raid, or Party members if you are in a Party)
NOTE : Group notes made on Instance maps will NOT be set as Mininotes on the Minimap

- Fixed a problem with the Localised names of Plugin maps (especially Atlas)

- Fixed a problem with note creation messages on Plugin maps

- Simply moved the Atlas-specific Plugin code to its own AddOn and folder where it can be maintained separately to MapNotes itself. (Or enabled/disabled separately, and replaced by newer/alternative Plugin code for Atlas)

Premade & Automatic Notes

A few points to make :

1.) MapNotes can be used to make notes on AlphaMap or Atlas maps; But I'm not aware of any pre-built note databases for AlphaMap or Atlas.
However, you can automatically generate MapNotes on AlphaMap by using the /MapNotes_Import_AlphaMap slash command. This means that you could then disable AlphaMap's own Instance notes, and just use MapNotes
(This is the way that the notes were generated on the AlphaMap map of Zul'Gurub in the picture)

2.) WoWKb works with MapNotes to mark Mobs and NPCs on the map, and I believe there are pre-build WoWKb databases available - although WoWKb has not been updated for a while so you would have to test if it still works with the latest WoW toc.
The neat thing about this solution is that you can turn the MapNotes on/off for particular Mobs/NPCs when you want them.

3.) If you turn on the MapNotes Option to Auto-note Landmarks, then MapNotes will create notes for Points of Interest on the map when you open any map.
When this Option is enabled, then MapNotes will also remember any map markers given to you when you ask NPCs for directions to Trainers, etc.

4.) NotesUNeed works with MapNotes to automatically generate notes for Quest NPCs.

5.) Don't forget MapNotes has short cuts for quickly generating MapNotes for your current Target

6.) Alteratively, you could get MobMap which has a pre-built database for all sorts of Mobs and NPCs. It does not require MapNotes and places its own markers on the map.
However, you will still need MapNotes if you want to make your own notes on the WorldMap, AlphaMap, or Atlas.

Tiny bit o' praise

Talic,
A quick note to say that your efforts are greatly appreciated! MapNotes is surely one of the best designed, most useful mods of the hundreds available today.
Thank you,
Nikk

I tried out this mod because the game desperately needs waypoints. I liked how it was simple and elegant, however it has one bad bug which prevents me from using it.

The single minimap waypoint isn't properly displayed on the minimap when 'rotate minimap' option is on.

I dont understand how people can play with a minimap that doesnt rotate to the direction you are heading... but either way, this bug makes me unable to use this mod.

Edit: I would like to add that I don't care for wasting screen space with more stuff, so having alphamap onscreen in addition to the built in minimap (when the built in minimap does enough on its own), is not an option in my book.

Cool

I am trying to find something else to use for waypoints and navigation than cartographer, because I've just about had it with the two billion updates it has with no instructions or information about what was messed with... or even the proper install method (it has bat files OMG! pfft).

Since the only thing I ever used cartographer for was its waypoints... it seems to me a bloated waste of memory for such a need.

Speaking of the minimap then, do you know offhand if you will ever make MapNotes support showing more than just one note on minimap at a time? (ala gatherer, or cartographer)

Its the one reason I tried to stick it out with cartographer... it's waypoint display on minimap was wonderful (allowed multiple, was fast updating on turns, and faded out over distance from points etc). Gatherer does it too, but its update speed when you turn is about 0.5sec for refresh and its annoying lol. But gatherer is a must have for us miners/herbies!

Anyhow, thanks for the update on your desire to put minimap rotation support in!

Well the good news is that MapNotes already DOES support multiple Mininotes
Its something I added very early on when I took over development, as I really wanted the feature myself

You can toggle the Mininote status of as many notes as you like by <Alt>+Right-clicking on a MapNote.

(You can quickly turn of a Mininote without opening the map by <Control><Alt><Click> on the Mininote on the Minimap)

See the MapNotes Readme.txt file for more details - there are LOADS of different ways of doing things.

You are only allowed one Party Note OR one Thottbott Note, and therefore only one of these can be used as a Mininote - but you can have lots of proper MapNote Mininotes enabled at the same time as you are showing a Party Note, or Thottbott note.

There isn't a quick global way of flagging all MapNotes as Mininotes if that's you mean ?
Although that would be relatively easy to add.... it might have a slight performance hit.... Mmmm....
Well I might add the fading at a distance effect, IF I add a global Mininote option....

I'll certainly think about this.

Thanks for the interesting idea

Well, somehow I was under the impression only one could be activated at a time from what I was reading in the readme, and when I tried it, I coulda sworn it turned the prior one off when I wanted to show a second note I had created (like how when you ask the gaurd for a second location, it turns off the first one, grr).

What is a "thottbot" note anyhow... I kept seeing a mention of it, and honestly... no clue what its referring too.

I could imagine a party note is one, but that would mean I need party members who run the same mod lol.

As for turning them all on at once. How bout more of just an option of "New notes show on minimap by default or not". This way when you make a new note, it shows on the minimap till you either turn it off manually, or delete it.

But anyhoo, thats all fluff. I think the biggest problem is getting the minimap rotation working

<Alt>-Right clicking a note will toggle its status as a Mininote (or by bringing up the note menu) As many notes as you like
I have a lot of faith in the person who tested this for me, but if there has been a new bug since 2.2 then definitely let me know

"/mn -nextmini" slash command will toggle the status of whether new MapNotes will also be set as Mininotes by default, and will remain on until you turn it off (although it will be reset to off by re-logging and isn't saved as a permanent option atm)

I can't remember at all what happens with Guard Directions, but I don't think the recorded MapNote is set as a Mininote by default. I think the Minimap icon is made by the game itself, and disappears when you reach your target... I don't have the game installed, so I can't do a definitive test myself atm.
Let me know if the actual MapNote is definitely being set as a Mininote, and then turning off automatically when you ask for another direction...

Group Notes
Group notes are temporary notes that are also automatically set as Mininotes, and which will be shared with Raid / Party members who also have MapNotes.
<Control><Shift>-Right Click will create a Raid Note shared with all Raid
<Shift>-Right Click will create a Party Note shared only with Party (even when in a Raid)
You don't HAVE to be in a Group to use this note - and I often use it as a quick way to set a Mininote by just <Shift>-clicking on the map; It's only a temporary note however.

I'll agree that the Readme could be tidied up, but there are so many ways of doing things with MapNotes, and documentation is tedious ;p

And the "/mn -nextmini" command should probably be renamed to something more intuitive, and possibly recorded as a saved option...

Thottbott notes are temporary MapNotes created by the "/mn -tloc xx, yy" command which are automatically set as Mininotes.

Thottbott was the original AddOn to introduce coordinate recording 3 years ago or something (afaik), and the Thottbott client was the original in game Database recorder for feeding and updating the "http://www.thottbott.com" web site.
So people would find something on the Thottbott web site, recorded as being at (44,56), and would use Thottbott AddOn Minimap coordinates to get there - and when MapNotes came out, they added the temporary Thottbott MapNote so people could track the location via a Minimap Icon.
Everyone is now familiar with this kind of thing, and lots of web sites have sprung up to do the same thing like WoWGuru, Alkhazan (or something), and now WoWHead.... but Thottbott was the original afaik, and is still part of the Cosmos UI.

RE "Guard Directions":

I was making a relation... how the 'original' game code is with waypoints, it is all just one at a time and disappears. I wasn't saying MapNotes did that, sorry for the confusion.

RE "Saving Default Status":

Yeah, that would be good, as I'm switching from toons quite often, and know I'll forget it lol. And yeah, the slash code for that didnt stick out at me, thus why I must have gleaned over it and didn't see you already had a deafult 'ON' setting! Ooops.

RE "Thottbott Thingy":

Ah. Ok. Legacy code. Gotcha =)

RE "Readme":

The bane of all programmers existence. I tend to slouch on commenting my code, and I hate futher trying to write a readme that covers what 'idiots' will need to know So I understand completely how it can look a bit like spec notes and not a helpful documentation. You are forgiven lol hehe.

Honestly its a good mod. I will be testing out your map rotation code, because Its something I really am looking forward too, so I will let you know if I see anything fresh crop up as a result. I currently only have one 'bug' that is being caused by SOMETHING, so I won't report that one a MapNotes related (since the bug shows up without mapnotes enabled).

Good work!

Interface/AddOns/MapNotes/MapNotes.lua: 1216: attempt to index global 'MinimapCompassRing' (a nil value)

Hmm, MinimapCompassRing is not a known object it appears... I'm going to try something...

EDIT:
Yeah, case incorrect, doing MiniMapCompassRing stops that error.

EDIT:
Alt-Clicking on Minimap coords gives this error: MapNotes.lua: 1253: attempt to perform arthmetic on global 'delatX' (a nil value) ... I did this while targetting Ol'Sooty.

EDIT:
After tracking down that bug, and adjusting it a bit looking at the prior version. Another one cropped up about xScale and yScale (because of another case sensative with the constants). Fixed that one, and got it to stop erroring and display the notes on the minimap. however I musta goofed on the dist variable, because all points showed on the edge of the minimap in the direction they were (distance beyond rim).

Anyhoo, once I got them to show, they _DID_ rotate, however incredibly slow (like how gatherer does it). They skip and stutter as you turn around, makes it a bit annoying. Not sure if you could delve into cartographer and see what they did to make minimap notes turn and update as fast as the standard game minimap dots n things?

Thats it for my report for now. It just looks like a handful of case-issues with variables. once you get those, you should be well on your way to getting it functional.

Can you clarify if I need to do anything 'special' to have the LightHeaded support activate? When I click on co-ordinates in the LightHeaded frame it doesnt appear to do anything for me. I have the latest LightHeaded version as available on this site (shows ingame as v.157), and ofc the latest version of MapNotes.
