PlayerProfile

Version: 0.3
by: Lilithurian [More]

The PlayerProfile add-on allows World of Warcraft players to add information about themselves to a profile in game, and share this profile with other players. Information such as real name, age, gender, a picture, a statusupdate and more can be optionally provided and shared. At this stage, players can edit and view their own profile, and inspect other players’ profile (provided they use the PlayerProfile add-on too).

Additional information:
This add-on is a prototype for my master thesis and far from being officially released to the general public. Testing the add-on in an early stage allows me to gain valuable insights from users and make necessary improvements in the future. I hope you will be able to see past any flaws in the coding or design elements, and open your mind for the more general idea of the add-on.

I'm very much aware of that. Its not like I developed the entire add-on yet, its only a prototype for my thesis. I couldn't exactly wait with that (unless I wanted to do it over the summer, but no thanks ).

For my master thesis I have conducted research about the importance of transparent identities in World of Warcraft, and how it could possibly improve the gaming experience for players.

The more broader idea behind this add-on, is that in the future it could be used somewhat like Battle.net (or be integrated with it, if thats even possible for addon developers) by expanding the add-on with an advanced friends list and a friend feed of status updates. The real name (or nickname) and characters provided by the Player Profile could be used to display additional information about your friends in the Friends List. In the same manner, the status updates provided in the Player Profile could be used to make a live feed from your friends.

I've made a mock-up of how this broader idea could look like (Photoshop for the win):

However that is all very advanced addon programming and I'm just a beginner. But its an idea that Id like to test with the general public.

I really like this idea. I hope that it catches on so there will be a reason to actually get this addon. Hopefully it can be as widespread as myspace is! Will keep an eye on this one!

I don't, obviously. I don't think you do either. That and playing a game as a social activity and getting that personal with it are two very different things.

Take Second Life, for instance. Plenty of people will give you a mountain of information about who they are and what they do in game, but will draw a sharp line at who they are in real life.

Personal anecdotes aside, it would be interesting to see whether an idea like this takes off as an indication of just how much people are actually interested in sharing about themselves outside of the game inside of the game.

Love the idea, its like WoWSpace or something. ^_^

I'd like to see a large portion of this addons functionality incorporated into the new battle.net communication system, allowing such information to be shared with only added friends. I could see this even being expanded upon a little more, with mini CharacterProfiles too, so I can have info about each specific character linked to my account... such as tradeskills info or specs, etc. With a little bit more in depth info about them.

@ the guy below me... bro do you know how many people use wow strictly for the social aspect of it? More than you might think, obviously haha. I myself and quite a number of people I play with don't care about the anonymity the game provides. Especially when half of em are RL friends to begin with.

I'm intrigued.

Not sure how many would actually use this. I think they rather enjoy the anonymity WoW provides.

Is that part of the 'Master Thesis'?
