NPCScan  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 8.0.1.13
by: Torhal [More]

NPCScan helps you find NPCs by scanning nameplates, minimap vignettes, and mouseover targets, with an optional dynamic targeting keybinding. Once an NPC is found by one of these methods, an on screen alert is displayed and an audio alert is played.

Nameplates
Alerts will be triggered whenever a nameplate is created, if that nameplate belongs to one of the tracked NPCs. To use this feature with any reliability, the Interface->Names->Always Show Nameplates option must be turned on from the WoW Game Menu.

Dynamic Target Keybinding
NPCScan includes a key binding that will trigger a dynamically-generated targeting macro. Each time it is pressed, the key binding will trigger a /targetexact <mob name=""> for every tracked NPC in the current zone you are in, in addition to any custom NPC additions. This only attempts a search each time it is triggered; it is not a continuous search.

To access this feature, just set a keybind under the Key Bindings->AddOns->NPCScan->Targeting Macro section.

“Found” Alert
When an NPC is found, NPCScan alerts you by playing a loud and distinctive sound, making your screen pulse red, and displaying a Targeting Button for every NPC that is found.

Targeting Buttons
When clicked, the targeting button tries to target the NPC it depicts. You can also bind a key to trigger the newest button, in cases where multiple buttons are spawned.

Note: These buttons cannot be shown during combat. In the unlikely case that you do find a rare while fighting, the button or buttons will appear after you leave combat.

Options
NPCScan's main options window can be accessed from the Interface Options menu. To access the NPC list and other settings, type “/npcscan”.

New sounds can be added to the alert sound dropdown menu by installing SharedMedia.

    • Added an “Alert sound file” dropdown to choose which sound to play for alerts. Additional sounds can be added using SharedMedia-type addons.

    • Added an option to suppress the “already cached” log-in alert.
    • Added Gondria to the default rare list, and updated some rares that are now tamable in 3.1.

I did indeed manage to find the burrowed fulgorge with this yesterday. Also got my TLPD after only 6 hours camping though-out a week. Also found a very dead putridus Just waiting on damn doomsayer now.

The feature Id still like to see is it adding mapnotes to cartographer and cartographer3 where the rares are (silverdragon supports it :P ) And maybe a feature -similar- to ESN in which is scans nameplates just for king krush and loquenathal, cuz im tired of clearing my cache in dalaran :P

By the way, does the sound go off still when the game sound is muted?

I'll be adding a checkbox to unmute and enable "sound in background" when the targetting button is up next.

In its current version, if game sound is muted, will it still play the drums?

If you turn off the "Enable Sound" checkbox in the Sound options window, then it won't. But if you leave that on and turn off every other checkbox like "Sound Effects", "Music", etc., you will hear the alert sound but no in-game sounds. There might be a few other sounds that would get through if you tried this, but I didn't find any in my brief test.

You don't have to delete the whole directory. just the creaturecache.wdb file in your \World of Warcraft\Cache\WDB\enUS\

This addon and the EULA?

As it does seem to automatically scan for an npc, is this "legal" in regards to the EULA, and the blizzard stands on automated addons?

Just curious as I see some of our hunters are using it to catch the rare pet from SB.

Since all of the scanning is done within the game with no third party executables, it falls under the guidelines in Cairenn's sticky post, Mods FAQ (AddOns, UIs, Interfaces): 5. Legal?. In this regard, it is the same as similar mods such as ESN Rare and SilverDragon.

Clearing the cache manually does seem a little out of line with usual addons, but I figured since Blizzard often advises doing just that to troubleshoot many problems, it wouldn't be a problem. However, if Blizzard does decide that they don't like what _NPCScan does, they have at least one simple way to make it not work anymore without affecting any other addon. In any case, you are in no danger if you use the mod.

That is actually very good news. As it was my understanding that these automated tasks was no longer allowed.. Which just gives a whole set of ideas

Well, I liked it. I didn't think ESN Rare had copied it yet. (It did copy out my reimplementation of the cache-scanning, though.)

And so it begins...

No, no. NPCScan had it first. SilverDragon just had it before ESN Rare.
