Hi, my name is Thaoky, and I'm an Altoholic

Altoholic is an Ace 3 add-on written for people who dedicate most of their time to leveling alts, and who want to have as much information as possible in one place.


IMPORTANT NOTE:

I am back in the game since 28/12/2020.

If you are upgrading from a version below 9.0.003, YOU MUST CLEAR YOUR SAVED VARIABLES !!

This means cleaning the following files in \WTF\Account\<your_account>\SavedVariables : Altoholic.lua & All DataStore*.lua



About the add-on:

The add-on has been in development since December 2007 and was officially released in late March 2008. It provides you information about your alts (bags, mails, AH, etc...) without having to reconnect them all the time.

About the author:

I was born in '76 (you do the math) and I work as a Project Manager + Software Architect + Full Stack Web Dev (yup, multiple hats) in a large multinational, so my coding time is limited, and Work > Gaming.

I live in Belgium, and obviously play on EU only.

Assistance will be provided on a best effort basis, but in any case always be polite and respectful when asking for help, I am neither a teenager, nor a punching ball. I am a cool guy with people who are cool with me. Respect that rule and we'll be fine.

2020/12/28: Due to Teelo's actions, I have reverted his changes and resumed development based on my latest version of the code. Some of his new features are temporarily not available anymore, some are gone forever. The main Shadowlands features will be back though, just be patient.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR 8.0 : As with every new expansion, many things have changed in the API, and it is REQUIRED to clear your Saved Variables for the addon.
This means cleaning the following files in \WTF\Account\<your_account>\SavedVariables : Altoholic.lua & All DataStore*.lua

There WILL be bugs if you use your old files without cleaning them first.
Some fixes to work around API changes are too time consuming, so cleaning is required. A meagre price to pay once per expansion.

- Fixed an issue where sorting the bags while the merchant frame is opened would trigger a slow down (Thanks Belazor !)

Just to put that out of the way, do you have a decent computer or a very old one ? The code triggered when mousing over an item is consistent, but shouldn't make you lag that much.

Could you make this quick test please ?

Disable all addons except altoholic, then try again, and see if it's still the same. Let me know

Offline Guildies

Is there a way to show Offline Guild Members in the Guild Members listing? Mine only shows who's online right now, and would like to utilize ALT-O-Holic to view Offline Members as well as their linked ALTs.

You can't gain new recipes just from raising skills. Thus there's no need to scan tradeskills at all in this event.
Just look in Skills pane, which skill has changed it's level and that's all you need, I believe.

Let me go a bit more in details. Assume the profession is tailoring and has the following content:

- Bag
Woolen Bag
Linen Bag
- Cloth
Woolen Boots
Woolen Cape
- Miscellaneous
Gray Woolen Shirt
Red Linen Shirt

Where the headers are obviously Bag, Cloth and Miscellaneous.
If all headers are expanded (as they are in my example), calling GetNumTradeSkills() will return 9, because there are 9 lines (3 headers and 6 crafts).

If all headers are collapsed, only this is shown:

+ Bag
+ Cloth
+ Miscellaneous

.. and GetNumTradeSkills() returns 3, meaning that you CANNOT know the content of a given category, which is why, prior to every scan, I call ExpandTradeSkillSubClass(i) to make sure I will "see" all content. The problem is that this call triggers the event TRADE_SKILL_UPDATE, to which I DO NOT respond because I personnally think it triggers way too often.

I only make a full scan in these situations :

- When the tradeskill window is opened
- When the tradeskill window is opened and a skill point is earned (thus after a green, yellow or orange craft), and ONLY if a point was earned.
- A partial scan (that does not trigger TRADE_SKILL_UPDATE) is also performed after every craft to see if a cooldown was activated, but this one is extremely fast and does not expand/collapse any header.

And actually, you can gain new recipes (cfr alchemy) after crafting an item, so to me, the way it happens now makes sense. That does not mean it can't be perfected, but it's quite close to what it should be.

The Lag is still there when everything is disablet except from Altoholic
Dual Core CPU 4 GB Memory , SATA 2 Harddisk, ATI DirectX 10 supportet Grafikboard

BUT i managed to fix it
i just Deleted the old altoholic.lua

Keep up the damn good work

Well, right, but it's still lagging. (In my case - alot, since my normal frame rate is around 20-30)

In LSW, lilsparkysworkshop.lua around line 1936 (in my version, didn't download the latest), you'll find this code:

I've found a little bit more about my unusual problem as reported previously. First, it appears that WUU does screw up the files it extracts in some fashion. They gain an extra carriage return at the end of lines. I'm not sure why this should affect things, but in 3.2001b, it prevented me from using Altoholic at all. 3.2001c still has a couple of errors, but works perfectly otherwise, so that's a boon. To find out why this was a problem, I did some testing, and here's what I found.

It looks like several of the .lua files in Altoholic are encoded as UTF-8. I manually converted them over to ANSI, and that fixed all of the problems I was having. I'm contacting the WUU people because I think whatever WUU uses to unzip the files is damaging their formatting, or has some sort of a bug when extracting UTF-8 files. If I install Altoholic manually, from the website, it works perfectly, no errors. So I've got a workaround that works, and I'm going to stick with it.

Thaoky, could you help me identify more about what's going wrong here though? Here's a dump of the sort of errors I'll still get after having WUU install 3.2001c:

That's entirely possible, when I uploaded the file on curse svn, I got a few errors that had to do with encoding, and converted a few files from ANSI to UTF-8, so I suspect that would be the issue. I find it weird that a tool messes up the file format anyway, such tools are supposed to automate tasks for you, not change content on the fly.

The best thing to tell to the WUU guys is simply not to change the format, or to make sure that whatever API they might be using does it, that's the kind of issues I've seen in previous jobs.

Version 3.2.001c Archive...

I downloaded Version 3.2.001c today. The file I got was 1250246113-Altoholic.zip. Upon unzipping, I got the following list of folders in the folder I use to unzip archives:

It still happens Altoholic only remember that my main know how to craft only one item - Robes of Arcana.
As I can remember, last time i opened craft window it was this:
I ordered to craft that robe, closed tradeskill window before it was done.
And didn't opened after that.

Ideas for the night...

Sharing auth page.
It's long and cluttered if you have more than one character and more than one person to authorize.
I was thinking to simplify it a bit and came with idea of something that looks more like windows access control panels. I'll try to put it in text, tell me if it need some drawings.

Layout I suggest would be 3-column.
First what you have first now - list of authorised entities with assigned access modes.
Second is list of accessible objects - accounts, guilds and characters.
Third is a checked list of DataStore modules related to the chosen object with states of allow(golden)/inherited allow(silver)/not allow(unchecked).

Mmm... a bit tired, will continue after a nap. ^___^
