NPCScan  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 8.0.1.13
by: Torhal [More]

NPCScan helps you find NPCs by scanning nameplates, minimap vignettes, and mouseover targets, with an optional dynamic targeting keybinding. Once an NPC is found by one of these methods, an on screen alert is displayed and an audio alert is played.

Nameplates
Alerts will be triggered whenever a nameplate is created, if that nameplate belongs to one of the tracked NPCs. To use this feature with any reliability, the Interface->Names->Always Show Nameplates option must be turned on from the WoW Game Menu.

Dynamic Target Keybinding
NPCScan includes a key binding that will trigger a dynamically-generated targeting macro. Each time it is pressed, the key binding will trigger a /targetexact <mob name=""> for every tracked NPC in the current zone you are in, in addition to any custom NPC additions. This only attempts a search each time it is triggered; it is not a continuous search.

To access this feature, just set a keybind under the Key Bindings->AddOns->NPCScan->Targeting Macro section.

“Found” Alert
When an NPC is found, NPCScan alerts you by playing a loud and distinctive sound, making your screen pulse red, and displaying a Targeting Button for every NPC that is found.

Targeting Buttons
When clicked, the targeting button tries to target the NPC it depicts. You can also bind a key to trigger the newest button, in cases where multiple buttons are spawned.

Note: These buttons cannot be shown during combat. In the unlikely case that you do find a rare while fighting, the button or buttons will appear after you leave combat.

Options
NPCScan's main options window can be accessed from the Interface Options menu. To access the NPC list and other settings, type “/npcscan”.

New sounds can be added to the alert sound dropdown menu by installing SharedMedia.

    • Scans can now be limited to worlds (continents or instances). • Removed the rare raptors from default settings, since they no longer drop pets.
    • Removed the mostly obsolete “Search for Tamable NPCs” option.
    • Now uses ZoneIDs instead of map file names to locate tamable mobs. Consequently, The Razza now gets detected accurately in Dire Maul.
  • 3.2.0.8:
    • Rewrote the screen border flash so that it should never conflict with other mods that use it.

    • Now manages which overlays are shown by the RareSpawnOverlay and _NPCScan.Overlay addons.
    • Added four rare raptor mobs that drop non-combat pets in 3.2: Dart, Takk the Leaper, Ravasaur Matriarch, and Razormaw Matriarch.
    • No longer shows an alert button for tamable NPCs while resting (in an inn or city), although you will still need to clear the cache.
    • Added all localized mob names for zhTW, and as many as I could find for zhCN and koKR.
    • Added an “Unmute for alert sound” setting to play the alert sound even if WoW is muted.
    • Added an “Alert sound file” dropdown to choose which sound to play for alerts. Additional sounds can be added using SharedMedia-type addons.
    • The alert border flash now only shows when you enable “Screen Edge Flash” in the Default UI's Display Interface Options panel.
    • Now continues searching for rares in 5-man dungeons. Raid dungeons, battlegrounds, and arenas will still disable scanning, however.
  • 3.1.0.1:
    • Achievements to kill rares now have their own lists in the options window.
    • Added slash commands to add and remove NPCs from the custom tracking list: “/npcscan add <NpcID> <Name>” and “/npcscan remove <Name>
    • You can now add tamable mobs to your search list and toggle them all using a “Search for tamable NPCs” setting.
    • Found alerts for tamable mobs will note that they are tamable and may be false alarms.
    • Added an option to suppress the “already cached” log-in alert.
    • Added Gondria to the default rare list, and updated some rares that are now tamable in 3.1.

Suggestion

Hi there, thanks for your addon. It's been very useful to me, but I've got one humble suggestion to make for future versions.

It would be great if there could be some way to use a 'tomtom-alike' arrow, to point you in the correct direction because, even if you get the warning, you loss a lot of time trying to locate the exact position of the mob, time in which other player could get the mob first...

I know that you can put a separate arrow for a party member, because I use an addon named MAX_PartyWaypoints, which uses other addon's built-in arrow to generate another one for a party member (useful in BG's), but I don't know if that same thing could be possible for a mob.

Just a suggestion for you to think about. Thank you for your work and for reading this.

custom npc's across all chars

Im glad i found npc scan as its been working a treat with finding the rare raptor spawns.

Although, one thing i did notice is that custom npc i added for one character werent added in the npc scan custom npc list on other characters, which would be nice if they where.

A red x means you've seen the mob and it's in your cache, so you'd have you clear your cache before you could find that mob again. For the achievement-related mobs, a green check mark means you've already killed that mob and gotten credit.

The correct folder should be <World of Warcraft/Interface/AddOns/>; just un-zip the _NPCScan folder into there. If everything's in the right place, you should find a file called "_NPCScan.toc" inside of the <World of Warcraft/Interface/AddOns/_NPCScan/> folder. WowInterface has a detailed guide available if the mod still won't appear.

I have an idea for a variation of the dalaran idea, only play the sound and go all crazy when the tamable mob you find is in the zone where it should be found in the wild

i.e. finding gondria in zuldrak will make the alarms go off, whereas finding her in icecrown wont

and if this is already implemented, well, its still early morning ^^

i must say tho, after using this mod for so long, the drum noise heard elicites an actual physical response in my body, with heightened senses and a flow of adrenaline...

The achievement-related mobs can't be removed individually. If you already killed that NPC, you might want to turn off "Search for completed Achievement NPCs". Otherwise, you must disable that entire achievement or clear your cache again.

Alternatively, you could disable the "Print login reminders to empty the cache" option from the main _NPCScan menu.

How do i remove it? I see the name in the list, but it seems i can't interact with it?

Btw, does it slow down the game that it has to check this cache all the time?
It's actually pretty light on performance, and probably won't affect your framerate at all. Things might slow down a tiny bit if you add hundreds of custom NPCs to search for, but not many people do that.

Since the new version, porting into Dal and having a nearby hunter with a rare will trigger only the text and not the sound or targetting.

Is this working as intended? Putridus is easily seen from dal.
Yep, the new version won't show the button or play sounds for hunter pets while you're in Dalaran anymore. You'll still see Putridus' alert from there, though.

Some of the rare mobs names are greyed out despite them not being cached, why is this and how can I get the addon to search for them again?
If you don't have "Search for tamable NPCs" enabled, tamable mobs will be grayed out in that list. The "Search for completed Achievement NPCs" option works similarly. Also, for the achievement lists, the entire table will be grayed out if you have that achievement disabled.

Am I right in thinking the addon only alerts you if a mob being searched is right near you?
Yep. In most cases, the range is about 100 yards (targeting range).

I may have figured it out. Apparently there was a little checkbox on the frostbitten tab that was not checked, and made all the names other than the cached ones brighter. Maybe that was the problem.
That'd do it.

I just had a problem with the addon telling me Dirkee was nearby. I was killing the librarians and be actually snuck up behind me and aggroed without the addon triggering. I'd cleared the cache before I logged in tonight, so I know he wasn't cached, and all the option for recognition are enabled. After I killed him it showed him as cached, along with my pet Loque'nahak. I tried the test button and it made the sound like it was supposed to.

The addon worked in the past editions, which is odd. Using the most current. I kind of liked the alerts you got in Dalaran, etc. It let me know the addon was working

*EDIT*

I may have figured it out. Apparently there was a little checkbox on the frostbitten tab that was not checked, and made all the names other than the cached ones brighter. Maybe that was the problem.
