NeedToKnow: Simple, effective timer bars

Track specific buffs, debuffs, and cooldowns with bars that always appear in the same place in the same color. NeedToKnow is great for short buffs and debuffs you use a lot. For example, a rogue could show bars for Slice and Dice, Rupture, and Garrote.

  • Easy to set up
  • Works with spells, abilities, items, totems, procs, and internal cooldowns
  • Track more than one spell or ability with one bar
  • Works with Retail and Classic WoW

Other features
  • Save setups for different specializations
  • Track by name or spell ID
  • Show cast time indicator to see when to refresh buffs and debuffs before they finish
  • Make bars deplete at same rate to see which will finish first
  • Blink bars when buff or debuff missing
  • Track buffs on raid members without having to focus them

Instructions

General options are available in the Blizzard interface options menu. You can type "/needtoknow" or "/ntk" to lock/unlock the addon. To configure individual bars, right click them while unlocked. Bars work while locked. If you only see full bars that aren't changing in response to anything, they are unlocked! Just type /ntk to lock them and get them working for you.

You can enable more groups of bars by going into the Interface settings off the main menu and choosing the AddOns tab.

When entering your settings, be careful with your spelling and capitalization. Also remember that buffs and debuffs sometimes have different names than the items and abilities that apply them. The Death Knight ability Icy Touch, for example, applies a DoT called Frost Fever.

On each bar you can enter in multiple buffs/debuffs deliminated by commas. They are prioritized according to order.
i.e. "Rake, Lacerate" - If both are applied, will display Rake until it expires and then it will track Lacerate
i.e "Curse of Recklessness, Curse of Exhaustion, Curse of Shadows" - Good way to track single instance curses

If you wish to use SpellID, make sure you are using the correct one!

FAQ

Why won't NeedToKnow work for me? I set it up but the bars just sit there at full, not moving or tracking anything.
The bars only time things when the addon is locked. Type "/needtoknow" or "/ntk" to lock/unlock the addon. You can also use the buttons in the AddOns tab of the Blizzard Interface Options menu.
Why won't NeedToKnow track this buff/debuff? It works for other things.
Check your spelling and capitalization. Also remember that buffs and debuffs sometimes have different names than the items and abilities that apply them. The Death Knight ability Icy Touch, for example, applies a DoT called Frost Fever. If you're using a SpellID, make sure you have the correct one.
How do I track multiple buffs or debuffs on a single bar?
Enter the name of each buff/debuff separated by commas. They are prioritized according to order. For example, "Rake, Lacerate" will display Rake until it expires and then it will track Lacerate. "Curse of Recklessness, Curse of Exhaustion, Curse of Shadows" is a good way to track single-instance curses.
How do I get more bars?
You can enable more groups of bars by going into the Interface settings off the main menu and choosing the AddOns tab. If four groups of six bars isn't enough for you, consider another timer bar addon. Also consider rethinking your UI.
How do I get NeedToKnow to track my own DoTs but not those applied by other members of my class?
Select "Only show if cast by self" in the bar's configuration menu.

Could you please display the changes you made to make that happen as well? Really keen to see that !

Anyone able to get into the lua and easily add more groups?

4 groups is just not enough, mostly because I've had to resort to using individual groups for individual buffs so that I can stack buffs on top of each other (Bone Shield, Icebound Fortitude, Lichborne). Trying to keep my UI clean and having 1 buff by itself 1.5 inches above the rest of my UI bugs me.

That said, awesome addon, it's very helpful and I appreciate all your work on it.

Edit:

e4e, any chance you could upload the LUA file? I tried following your instructions but I must have messed it up somewhere as it broke the addon. Thanks in advanced!

When?

This addon is pretty much exactly what Im looking for but with only 4 bars its not enough for me.

To do list

Add support for tracking multiple (de)buffs with a single bar.

Any eta on this?

What Im looking for for my death knight is an addon I can set up to show when my diseases are on the target and duration.

Second is a way to set up when my hostile target has a HoT on them so I know when to plague strile them.

This interface would do all this but when u can only place 1 buff/debuff on every bar atm it just doesnt work for me.
Anyone know an addon which can do the above allready?
Allso Id like to see icons instead of bars, so u get an icon with the timer under it instead.

This addon is great, exactly what I wanted, but I'd love if you could add the option of changing the font.

As promised, here are my proposed changes to v2.0.1 (NeedToKnow.lua):

1. Change both occurances of "PLAYER_ENTERING_WORLD" to "PLAYER_LOGIN".

2. Change both occurances of "COMBAT_LOG_EVENT_UNFILTERED" to "UNIT_AURA".

3. Replace the following function:
Code:
function NeedToKnow.Bar_OnEvent(self, event, ...)
	if ( event == "PLAYER_TARGET_CHANGED" ) or ( event == "PLAYER_FOCUS_CHANGED" ) then
		NeedToKnow.Bar_AuraCheck(self);
	elseif ( event == "UNIT_AURA" ) then
		if ( self.unit == select(1, ...) ) then
			NeedToKnow.Bar_AuraCheck(self);
		end
	end
end
One last recommendation. I would suggest removing the Mac specific files and folders from your .ZIP installation. Windows XP systems can generate an error when extracting some of these files: "Error Copying File or Folder" "The system cannot find the file specified." A few novices may shy away from your great addon when they see the extra __MAXOSX, . . . folders and then receive an error extracting.

Btw, I have one last change that I didn't post. It allows pattern matching, such as: "Blessing of" or "Seal of". I think that would be a good improvement to your addon aswell.

Thank you for the great work.

I just found this great addon today and spent a couple hours working with it. I discovered that buffs with "charges" such as Holy Shield do not fire [SPELL_AURA_REFRESH] when they are recast and they have lost charges. [SPELL_CAST_SUCCESS] is the only thing that fires.

In addition to this bug, I discovered that the [UnitBuff] function was not returning results during the [PLAYER_ENTERING_WORLD] event. This meant that buffs already on your character were not showing properly when first loading WoW.

I have fixed both of these issues and will present them as possible solutions in my next post. I hope that lieandswell will find it helpful. There may be some overlap with your other mod? I have not looked at it yet.

Take care and good adventuring everyone!

With the changes to buff/debuff stacking, very much looking forward to tracking multiple things with a single bar, or icon in TellMeWhen

One thing i'd really like to see which could happen with this addon is, for instance a Battle Shout button which:
1. If Bshout or Might is up, the button will be grayed out with a duration timer on the button itself.
2. If neither are up, the Button will be Highlighted and active.

I'd also prefer (for a dot class) to have the buttons faded out with a duration timer on them then lighting up when the dot expires - so you can plan ahead in your dot rotation.

Well, it wouldn't change where I'm looking on the screen for the information -- it would simply make that space look nicer, because there wouldn't be gaps between any of the bars. It would condense the few bars I need to know about into the smallest space possible. The fact that I can set the colors of the bars already makes them stand out from each other.

Hey, just a suggestion to make the mod more accessible. I like it already, I just think this kind of option would make it better. No offense intended.

I don't know if this is a bug or not, but my bars do not stay put between sessions. I put em in bottom-center, then when I relog, they're in upper-left.
