Simple Runes Bar  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 2009-10-19
by: Teek5449 [More]

Simple Runes Bar

Yes, another rune bar

The difference here is that all you get is a simple horizontal bar that contains your six runes and nothing else. These runes are not the default round icon that Blizzard provides but a bar that once you use your rune will fill up as the cooldown timer ticks away. There are a few options, you can move the bar where you like and also resize the runes via some simple in game slash commands. These settings will be saved between sessions.

Options:

  • /srb - Show the in game menu with this command list.
  • /srb lock - shows or hides the anchor that allows you to position the bars via your mouse.
  • /srb width NUMBER* - Changes the width of the runes to be NUMBER wide. NUMBER can be 0 through whatever (including decimals). e.g. "/srb width 50" will give the runes a width of 50.
  • /srb height NUMBER* - Changes the height of the runes to be NUMBER high. NUMBER can be 0 through whatever (including decimals). e.g. "/srb height 30" will give the runes a height of 50.
  • /srb defaults - Will set the addon to the default. All settings are lost.
    * note: If you do not enter a NUMBER then the current width / height will be displayed.

The homepage for this project is HERE.
Any bugs should be submitted via the tracker HERE.
As far as feature requests go, I made this to be as simple as possible with little to no setup or configuration and I do not want to succumb to feature creep like a lot of addons do. I may consider releasing a second branch of this addon with a full feature set but right now I will just iron out any bugs that show up in this release.

No bar appears, at all, only the default blizzard rune bar.

EDIT: Hmmm, never used this addon before but it was disabled in enabled addons window. It does work ^^

It will automatically disable itself if you are not on a Death Knight. Obviously it is of no use otherwise. if you are on a DK then it should work as intended.

Please include a folder in your structure so that addon updaters work and so that users can simply unzip to the Interface\Addons\ folder.

Yup, my mistake. I'm used to working on much larger projects where the SVN just takes care of packaging.... will be fixed.

Thanks for this mod, it's pretty much exactly what I was looking for!

Just to let you know, there's an error in the coloring code. I was trying to change the colors of the runes and found that the Unholy and Death rune labels were switched. Lines 54 and 56 specifically, the label that says RUNETYPE_DEATH affects the color of unholy runes and vice versa. Had me confused for quite a while!

If you could post a small tutorial on how to change the rune and background colors it would be much appreciated.

One more thing, I think I'm experiencing what the other guy was as well - after a while the runes don't disappear when you use an ability, it looks like all of your runes are always full. After reloading the UI it works fine again for a while. I'm not sure how long it takes for it to mess up or if there's a specific event that triggers it, I'll keep an eye out and let you know if I notice anything.

EDIT: I think I figured it out. It seems that over time, the transparency of the "empty" part of a rune becomes less and less, until eventually there is no transparency, so it looks like the runes are always full.

If you could post a small tutorial on how to change the rune and background colors it would be much appreciated.
It's very simple. In the addon's folder you'll find a file called core.lua. Open it up in something like notepad. Then you can either scroll down, not too far, to the line that says "local runeColorsTable =" (line 51 if you have a text editor with line numbers), or you can do a ctrl+F to find it. Underneath this line should be four lines beginning with one that says "[RUNETYPE_BLOOD]" and followed by similar lines with names of the other runes. Each line corresponds to that type of rune, except that, as I mentioned before, the ones labeled as Death and Unholy are switched.

On each line you'll see r =, g =, and b =. Those stand for red blue and green. Change the values to whatever you like. The values should be between 0.0 and 1.0. Zero means there will be none of that color and 1.0 means there will be lots of that color. Higher numbers will be brighter than lower numbers. A pure red would be r=1.0, b=0.0, g=0.0. If you've never worked with RBG colors before it will probably take some practice to get what you want. I wanted a brighter green for my unholy runes, so the value I used was r=0.25, g=0.9, r=0.25 for your reference. Don't forget that the Unholy and Death rune labels are mixed up!

Have WoW open while you edit the file, then after you change a value, type in "/script ReloadUI();" and your changes should be in effect. Repeat until you get what you want.

Hope that helps.

Is it somehow possible to change the background color to black? Right now it's just a few shades darker then the rune color and fairly hard to differentiate with a quick glance.

I have rewritten the code from the ground up. Not sure why the problem with the background building up like that occurred. The background is now a shade of gray that just differentiates itself enough so you can tell where the empty bar is. I have added some simple slash commands to allow for custom sizing as well. I have been using this new version personally for a few days now and have not seen any issues occurring. I also do not understand why some of you find the rune colors switched around? It works perfectly on my end. Either will a full compliment of addons running or just vanilla WoW.

Please feel free to post any issues and I will try and get to the bottom of it. Give this version a try. Let's see if those bugs are gone. There is not much code that can go wrong here so this addon should also be future proof. (hmmm)

Do you think you could add an option for spacing between the runes?
