Spell Alert (Balyn's Version) (3.0 patch)  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 3.0
by: balyn [More]

This is a 3.0 patch update to the old Spell Alert mod. I also made many of my own modifications to get the alerts more to my liking. Feel free to make suggestions on how to make it better.

Type /spellalert to bring up the options menu.

Basic information on how it works:

- There are two lines the alerts can show up on , a main alert line, and a second alert line where I send dangerous/powerful/cooldown type abilities that you should pay particular attention to (such as Divine Shield, Evasion, Bloodlust, Cloak of Shadows, etc.)

- Heal spells show up in blue on the 1st alert line.

- Attack spells show up in red on the 1st alert line.

- CC spells show up in yellow on the 1st alert line.

- Other misc spells show up in green on the 1st alert line (I suggest you turn these off if you want less "spam").

- Totems show up in orange in the 1st alert line.

- Dangerous/powerful/cooldown type spells show up in purple on the 2nd alert line. In addition, most of these spells will show an alert when they fade. These spells get their own alert line because they are more important to see, and there's less chance of them getting spammed off the screen on a 2nd line.

- In general, most instant cast spells are ignored. They tend to be very spammy and they are instant, so you can't interrupt/react to them anyway. There are exceptions, and certain instant cast spells do show up if I have determined they are particularly important to monitor (such as Divine Shield, Cloak of Shadows, Nether Protection, and many others.)

- Any of the spell types can be edited manually in the localization.lua file. The format should be fairly obvious and easy to change.

- If you want to cut down on most of the "spam", then type /spellalert and choose the option to only show casts from your target and focus target.

Re: Awesome!

This is good but it also brings back a huge amount of combat log spam and it seems to detect stuff nowhere near you... any ideas ?

Yeah, I just noticed this also.
It can get quite spammy, and why is it not always 2 lines?
And it detects alot of things no where near me, that's quite annoying.

In the beginning I thought it was more like Nurfed CombatLog Spell Alert, but doesn't seem so

It is good for arena, but as soon as I entered AV it became way too spammy, and detects things not even close to me.

Re: Re: Re: Awesome!

I tried spellalerter, and while this doesnt seem to have the spam buildup, it seem to just show an icon and the name of the player. I dunno for me I want a sentence LOL

oh well hopefully someone reads this

Here's some info and recommendations.

1. It'll show whoever is in combat log range, just the same as every other spell alert there is. There's no way that I know of to limit the range of what shows up. If it shows up in the combat log, it'll show up on the spell alert.

2. There's an option to only show spells from your target if that's what you want. Type /spellalert and check the box. That'll cut down on spam completely.

3. I would also recommend unchecking the box that says "Alert other spells/abilities". That'll stop things that aren't heals/attacks/CC/etc. from showing up.

4. As for the 2 lines, it'll put everything on the top/first alert window EXCEPT especially dangerous/powerful spells. Especially dangerous/powerful spells it puts on the 2nd line (such as Evasion, Divine Shield, Bloodlust, etc.) That way really nasty stuff won't get spammed off.

5. If you are running this on the new Sunwell Island, that place is a madhouse. Of course it'll be spammy. AV too. There's just a lot of people around. Again, check the box to alert for your target only if you don't want to see everyone.

Awesome work!

Although, it seems that this mod or spell alerter doesn't work on totem buffs from shamans either

Well, I purposely left totems out since it seemed kinda spammy, but I suppose I could add an option for it at some point.

May I ask how I could edit the .lua myself to include it? I'm still new to "Blizzard scripting".

Try editing the localization.lua file and find the section (at the top) named "SA_SPELLS_INSTANT".

Copy/paste an existing line within that section and edit it to the totem name. For example, at the end of the list, you'll see:

["Wyvern Sting"] = 1,

Copy/paste it to:

["Wyvern Sting"] = 1,
["Wyvern Sting"] = 1,

Then edit one of them to a totem name:

["Wyvern Sting"] = 1,
["Searing Totem"] = 1,

I'm pretty sure that'll work. If not, let me know.

I have a problem. It works when I fight with players/mobs on my home realm and doesn't when I meet people from any other realms -- on the battlegrounds and arenas.

Umm..I was using it in battlegrounds last night and it worked fine. Which options do you have chosen in the menu? I'll try it again in a BG and see if something changed today.

Thanks for quick replay

I tested it much harder today. Removed every addon, deleted Interface and WTF folders, so basically everything by default + spell alert, also by default.

It works. Pretty spammy, so I guess catching everything and working as intended. But as soon as I turn on to receive notifications from my target only, it stops working for everything except ppl from my realm.

P.S. I am playing on euro servers. As far as I know they are the same as in the US: on BGs nicknames in a target frame and above ppl heads are written as "player (*)". In combat log in "player-realm" format.

Ok, I'll try a different method to find your target and we can see if that fixes it for you. There'll be a different version up in the next day or two that you can try. Right now it's matching names, but perhaps the * or the player-realm thing is tripping it up. It should be easy to change.

Ok, new version 2.41 up using a different method to check your target. I also changed the option so it shows alerts from your target and your focus target.

Try it out.

It works, thanks a lot.

By the way, may I make a suggestion? It reports Nickname-Realm in notifications. For example Igorek-Stonemaul begins to cast fireball. Could be nice to remove unnecessary information, namely a realm name.
