Diplomancer  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 7.0.3.0
by: Talyrius, Phanx

Changes your watched faction based on your current location.
Verändert die angezeigte Fraktion basierend auf dem aktuellen Standort.
Sigue automáticamente la facción asociada con tu lugar actual.
Surveiller automatiquement la faction associée ŕ votre position actuelle.
Segue automaticamente a facçăo associado ŕ sua localizaçăo actual.
Автоматически следить за выполнением фракция связана с вашего текущего местоположения.
현재 위치의 진영을 자동으로 감시합니다.

Diplomancer changes your watched faction as soon as you enter a particular area, instead of waiting until you gain reputation with a faction like most other faction-switching addons. It also recognizes faction champion tabards inside appropriately-leveled dungeons.

When you find yourself in a location without an associated faction — for example, if you’re a troll taking a weekend camping trip in the lovely Redridge Mountains — Diplomancer will watch your race’s faction. If you would prefer to watch another faction instead of your race’s faction in these cases, you can choose your own default faction.

Type “/dm” for options, or browse to the Diplomancer panel in the Interface Options window.
Feature Requests
I consider Diplomancer to be complete, and will probably not add any new features. If you would like to suggest something anyway, feel free to submit a suggestion ticket describing your idea.

Note: Support for the new, non-tabard champion system added in Patch 5.2 is planned, but not implemented yet.
Bug Reports
If you encounter a problem with Diplomancer, please try some quick troubleshooting steps, and then submit a bug report to let me know about the problem.

Please copy this list into your ticket and fill in as much of the requested information as you can.
  • Diplomancer version number
  • WoW language and patch number
  • Character race and level
  • Zone and subzone you are in when the problem happens
  • Faction tabard you are wearing when the problem happens, if any
  • Description of the problem
Be specific! It’s nearly impossible to include too much information!
  • Steps I can follow to reproduce the problem
  • Whether the problem happens when all other addons are disabled
  • Exact text of the first related error message, if any
Please do not include any lists of local variables or installed addons that your error display may add!
  • Screenshot, if the problem is graphical
Remember to check on your ticket after a few days, as I may need more information from you in order to find and fix the problem!
Language Support
Compatible with all languages. Translated into English, Deutsch, Espańol, Français, Italiano, Portuguęs, Русский, 한국어, 简体中文, and 繁體中文.

To add or update translations for Diplomancer, enter them on the Diplomancer localization page on CurseForge, and then leave a comment, or send me a PM here or on CurseForge, to let me know that you’ve made changes. If you don’t have a Curse account and don’t want to create one, you can PM me your translations instead. Thanks!

To add or update translations for subzone names, see the WowAce project page for LibBabble-SubZone-3.0. If your language is not yet supported by this library, Diplomancer will run with only partial functionality.

My experience with Squire/Squire2 has been the opposite. I referred numerous people to Squire, and none of them were ever confused by how to use it. Typing "/squire" to bring up the options panel was intuitive for anyone who's used an addon, and "drag the macro onto an action button" was all the explanation I ever had to give. Once Cataclysm hit and everyone had to switch to Squire2, I've had a good portion of those people complain about the moved/changed options, and even watched several of them in real life as they struggled to find the new options, and squint at the checkboxes overlaid on icons. Even once they found the checkboxes, most of them didn't notice the button at the top of the window leading to the rest of the options.

As for XPBarNone, the internal code being run when you right-click on the bar and select a faction is exactly the same thing that happens when you check the box in the deafult UI, which is also exactly the same thing that happens when Diplomancer changes the watched faction. It would be possible to differentiate between "watched faction was changed by Diplomancer" and "watched faction was changed by the user or another addon", but again, I'm not interested in adding a bunch of bloated flags and checks and extra event processing to do it. Using the options panel to change the default faction is pretty quick and easy to do. How often do you really need to change your default faction anyway?

You can also set the watched faction through slash commands:

/dm default earthen

It's not case sensitive, and doesn't require the full faction name, just enough of it to uniquely identify it from other faction names.

I assume you're talking about Squire2 which I also use. I agree with you that the old way was better. However, the changes made the process more intuitive for non-technical minded individuals. I had referred several people to Squire that had mentioned being irritated by the complexity of mount macro's. Almost all of them didn't understand how to get the addon working and I had to walk them through it. With Squire2, everyone figured it out right away with little to no help.

Anyway, back to the default watched faction thing. I use the addon XPBarNone as an experience/faction bar replacement. I'm able to just right-click on the bar to access a list of all of my reputations and standings. From there, any faction I click on will become watched, so I don't actually use the "Show as Experience Bar" check-boxes. I used EventTrace and noticed three seperate UPDATE_FACTION events every time I changed my watched faction, so I'm pretty sure you could call GetWatchedFactionInfo() when that fires to see if it changed.

UPDATE_FACTION is an event that fires whenver the player gains or loses reputation with any faction. It has nothing to do with setting or detecting the watched faction.

It would be possible to hook the OnClick handlers for all of the "Show as Experience Bar" checkboxes and assume that if a user is clicking one, they want to set that as their default faction, but this is not something I will ever put in Diplomancer, for several reasons.

Firstly, all of the other options related to Diplomancer's behavior are in the Diplomancer options panel. I see no reason to split them up.

Secondly, though it seems to be all the rage these days, I don't see any intrinsic value in having an addon's options integrated into existing Blizzard UI panels versus having them in a dedicated panel in the Interface Options window. I use a number of addons that do this, and with most of them, it feels very clumsy, breaks or unintuitively modifies default UI functionality (which is what would happen if I implemented your suggestion in Diplomancer), sacrifices functionality that was present in an earlier version of the addon that used a dedicated options panel, and/or makes the option controls hard to see and use (especially for people like myself with poor vision) since they're shoehorned into a layout that definitely wasn't written to accommodate them.

It's also annoying to install a new addon and have to spend time guessing which window its options might be linked to, instead of just being able to open the Interface Options window and have them right there with all my other addon options. Having an addon's options split up in different locations is even worse.

For example, the addon I use to provide a "travel form/random mount/dismount" button recently made this switch. Previously, the addon had a dedicated panel for all of its options, including the ones to let me select which mounts I wanted it to include in the random selection. In the panel, mounts were grouped by type, so all the ground mounts were listed together, all the flying mounts were listed together, etc. Selection was easy: click on a mount to toggle it on or off. Selected mounts were shown in color with their icon higlighted. Unselected mounts were grayed out and not highlighted. You could also shift-click to quickly enable or disable all of the mounts in the category. After the switch, mount selection was done by means of checkboxes overlaid on the mount icons in the Blizzard mount UI. This was a huge downgrade. It's hard to see which ones are checked; on some icons, it's hard to see the checkbox at all. There's no way to quickly enable or disable whole categories. I have a lot of mounts, which means I have to click through a lot of pages to find a particular mount to enable or disable. There's no division by mount type. Nothing was gained by making this change, and a great deal of functionality and usability had to be thrown out to achieve it.

I may do just that.

Re: Default faction — No, it can't. Checking the "Show as Experience Bar" box is how you select a faction to watch. When Diplomancer changes your watched faction, it is doing exactly the same thing "behind the scenes" that the default UI does when you check the box for a particular faction, effectively checking the box for a different faction, causing the box you'd previously checked to be unchecked.
Shouldn't it be possible to use UPDATE_FACTION to check when the watched faction has been changed by a source other than Diplomancer and then consider that to be the default faction?

Phanx, are you planning on adding support for the new factions from Cataclysm?

BTW, I have a question I've had for a long time, but never got around to asking about. Is there any particular reason that the default faction to watch has to be in Diplomancer's configuration menu? Can't the default faction just be whatever I manually set to track with 'Show as Experience Bar' in the reputation window?

I don't know if you realize this, but tabards give you rep BEFORE 80 if you're in level 80 dungeons, like HoL, ToC, etc. So is there a way you can set it to show you those reps that match your tabard in a dungeon BEFORE 80? I use this method to gain rep with the factions I need before I hit the max, and with people helping carry you through, you can get a lot of runs in the regular level 80 dungeons before you ever ding.

The level 80 dungeons you can gain rep with a tabard before 80 are:

HoL
Occulus
CoS
UP
ToC

EDIT: Noticed the bug report feature after I posted this, but kept the comment just in case. L2 read ftw!

Frostborn Zones

No problem. Here's my subjective list of Frostborn-associated subzones:
  • Frosthold
  • The Foot Steppes
  • Inventor's Library
  • Loken's Bargain
  • Mimir's Workshop
  • Narvir's Cradle
  • Nidavelir
  • The Plain of Echoes
  • Temple of Invention
  • Temple of Life
  • Temple of Order
  • Terrace of the Makers
  • Temple of Winter
These, as far as I can remember, are involved with both:
  • Temple of Wisdom
  • Terrace of the Makers

I would consider the latter list slightly more Frostborn-related because the Sons of Hodir pre-quests really just 'pass through' the areas, and they're mostly populated with iron dwarves/earthen/mechagnomes rather than frost giants/vrykul. However, my main character is only Honored with SoH, so there might be more stuff that I just haven't seen yet.

I'm a detail-oriented person, so let me know if there are other zones that you'd like an Alliance "check" of.

The entire zone is actually associated with the Sons of Hodir, but as I have no Alliance characters and as of yet no Alliance volunteers, that is currently overridden for Alliance characters to the Frostborn faction. If you have time, please gather a list of subzones that should be associated with the Frostborn (i.e. towns and places you do quests from the towns) and post that.

I have some concerns with the following sub-zones of the Storm Peaks:
  • Dun Niffelem
  • Valley of Ancient Winters
  • Hibernal Cavern
  • Frostfield Lake
  • Fjorn's Anvil
  • Thunderfall
  • Brunnhildar Village
  • Valkyrion

Currently (for Alliance) these zones are associated with the Frostborn faction. However, they are all directly related to the Sons of Hodir faction, and it seems more appropriate to associate them as such. While the latter two don't really have any quests that offer Sons of Hodir rep, they are associated with the pre-daily questline.

Other than that, a fantastic addon, and one I'm glad to have added to my interface!
