Really, I'm not one to gallivant about the wilderness trying to make friends with beasts... at my size, it's a good way to get eaten! Besides, keeping a full stock of bits & bibbles for your critter can be terrible for your cash flow. But a Hunter friend of mine managed to convince me there'd be good money in outfitting such outdoorsy types, and before I knew it my workbench was cluttered with all sorts of animal-seeking, food-measuring, and pet-minding contraptions.
This gadget couldn't be any simpler to use: point it at a beast you see in the wild, and its zootropic neurowave scanner will analyze the critter's noggin and tell you what, if any, new tricks it can teach you.* Know what you're looking for, but not sure where to look? It'll help with that, too -- I've pre-programmed it with an extensive database on creature behavior (straight from Petopia, the best zoological resource on Azeroth), easily indexed by skill.
* Not recommended for use by elderly gnolls.

There is a bug in Hunters Helper at the moment that occurs when your pet gains the ability to be trained in a skill that you haven't learned or found yet.
For example, once I got to level 30 and normally my Cat would be able to learn Dash and Prowl (but I had not tamed any beast to learn these skills), /hh allowed me to click on the name of the skill (which I remember was displayed in green (available)) but gave the "Fatality!" warning in bugsack. I am about to look into this but if any of you with good .lua skills wanted to have a look, this needs addressing. Gazmik - I don't know if you are still supporting this addon, but it would be useful if you could incorporate the 2.4.1 fix we identified below into a new release and give us some pointers about how to address this issue too. Cheers EDIT : When I open the training window, the cursor sits on Bite 4 (which I have, but have not yet given to the Cat). When I click on Prowl, the Fatality occurs (see below) and the text in the window does not update correctly. While the heading changes to Prowl, the page contents are still for the Bite skill. Clicking on the small number 1 updates the screen properly and correctly tells me I cannot yet train this skill to my pet. Here's the exact error...

OK, here is the EXACT sequence of events which gives rise to the errors we have been having. This can be reproduced on a level 30 hunter with a level 30 cat.
Skills I have at level 30 are ALL Pet Trainer skills plus Bite 1-4, Ferocious Howl 1-2, Claw 1-4. I do not have the new Prowl and Dash skills yet. Pet active is a Cat (Hunar the black lion). The pet has been trained in Claw 4 and Growl 4 but NOT any of the Bite skills. 1. Open Hunters Helper. The cursor will probably be sitting on the highest rank you know of the first skill in the list. Below this you will see other skills the pet either has or can know. See the TOP box in the picture below. 2. Click ONCE on Prowl and you will get an error in the bugsack. Your screen will now look like the MIDDLE box. 3. Click ONCE on Prowl Rank 1. Your screen will look like the BOTTOM box. What I *think* is happening is that the table size used to display the Bite 1-4 ranks is not being cleared when a new skill is being clicked on, so when it is trying to display the available ranks of Prowl, it is thinking there is a fourth rank to display but in fact there isn't, hence the error in FHH_UIShowSpellDetail(prowl,nil): can't find requiredLevel Opinions? EDIT : my assumption of not resetting an index isn't actually the case - I am close to chasing down which function is in error, but in essence, there is one function call based on an OnClick event which is only passing a single parameter to a function expecting two. I'll have a look through it later today.

BUG FIX
An error occurs when you click on a skill in the Hunters Helper list that your pet could know due to its level but you have not yet learned a single rank of. For example, you have a Cat at level 30 which is now able to Prowl and Dash but have you not yet tamed any beast which can teach you these skills. The error appears as follows :
1. TAKE A BACKUP of \Interface\Addons\GFW_HuntersHelperUI\HuntersHelperUI.lua 2. Open the above file in your favourite text editor 3. Search for the SECOND OCCURANCE of the following string : FHH_UISelectedRank = rank;4. Paste the following text ABOVE this line : if (rank == nil) thenI have managed to find some other errors in the Addon to do with the colour coding of skills that you can/can't train and so on, but this was the big show-stopper for me. I hope this helps and I hope it keeps us going until Gazmik can offer an official fix.-- this handles abilities that we can use due to our level but have not learned any ranks of yetend

Thanks! and more info
Daniel... I just wanted to say thanks for your edits. I love these hunter helper addons. I usually am not one to complain, tending to wait things out, but I think next time I will simple use the data that Swatter provides and post here when I run into a roadbump with addons.
I should also note that during my own amatureish bug testing, that I attempted to click on Active and Passive abilities, and when doing so, I lost the ability to click on individual abilities like Natural Armor and Bite. The fix I found to reinstated those abilities back on all my hunters (I have 3) was to delete the settings that are found in the account file. C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\WTF\Account\ACCOUNTNAMEHERE\SavedVariables After doing that, I was able to view all abilities again. I recommend deleting the following files associated with Hunters Helper listed in the above folder after completing the edits listed here by Daniel. [GFW_HuntersHelper.lua] , [GFW_HuntersHelper.lua.bak], [GFW_HuntersHelperUI.lua], and [GFW_HuntersHelperUI.lua.bak] Hope this also helps. |

Thorlin - is that on the un-edited version of HuntersHelper or after my changes?
There is definitely a problem with the passive skills list - I am told I cannot train Cobra Reflexes until I learn it, but I already have and trained it to the pet when Hunters Helper was disabled to get round the problem. In addition I am told things like the Resistances are Unavailable even though I have learned but not yet trained the second rank of them. Don't forget that you can disable Hunters Helper in the addon list, /reloadui then train anything you need to using the default Blizzard UI then re-enable Hunters Helper. I will have another look at this over the next few days. Fingers crossed Gazmik has a look at this forum soon.

I have been speaking to the admins at WoWInterface and there is a method for fans of an addon to release fixes in an easy-to-install fashion.
I am currently looking at the problem with Cobra Reflexes not being trainable even though you have the skill. If I can make any headway with that problem, I will release a Patch File for GFW_HuntersHelper. All you should have to do then is install the original version to make sure everything is clean then install the Patch File over the top. I can't promise being able to fix it - the code is pretty convoluted at that point, but I'll try. In the mean time, here's a workaround... In the list of Addons for the game, disable JUST HuntersHelperUI (and NOT HuntersHelper itself). This way you still have all the tooltip goodness and the old command-line version of /hh but will revert to the Blizzard Pet Training window. EDIT : I have managed to fix the problem with trying to train Cobra Reflexes to your pet when you already know the skill but have just reset the pet abilities. I have further testing to do then I can release a Patch File to WoWInterface for review.

Ok, I just downloaded and instaled the mod, applied the patch and did the reset, but I keep getting a very annoying behaviour on the Filter dropdown. If I choose the "Unavailable", nothing happens, the same with the "available" and "can learn..." Sometimes they work, after lots of clicks, but most of the time they won't work, is there a manual workaround I mihgt add? I'm running the original mazzleUI, and decided to download the new version of the addon. I completely erased the older folders and copied the new ones, besides I erased the wtf\ ...gfwhunterhelper.lua... so everything would be just as good as new, but still getting this error. I'd like some info and help on what might be the cause, because it's such a nice addon.
Thanks a lot! |

The behaviour of the Filter drop-down is on my to-do list, along with the fact that the colours of some of the rows in the skills list are incorrect.
You have certainly installed it correctly - in fact you have been particularly thorough. As it stands at the moment, the 2.4.01 patch does not add or remove any files and the reset function clears the contents of the known skills list in the username/server/character/saved variables/huntershelper.lua file. Over the next couple of days I will put some more time into getting the main parts of HuntersHelperUI working as I believe Gazmik intended but as I mentioned, this is my first foray into .lua so I apologise that my speed will be slow. I am glad you are enjoying using Gazmik's mod - he did put a lot of effort into it - and I will do my best to help keep it working. Thanks also to the kind folks who have offered thanks and kind words via PMs.

Tsk Tsk...
To Steadfast (Daniel Coffey):
You should only make bug fixes, you should not take over another persons addon and change it's functionality... You should wait for the author to do that or at least discuss it with him... I have a great respect for Gazmik! I will not download your patch!

To those that complain about fixes: Do NOT DOWNLOAD the fixes, keep the buggy/broken addons. I'm sure the original author doesn't bother if mistakes are corrected, in fact, I'd appreciate the bugfixes if I was a mod author myself. Just keep up the GREAT work and thanks once again to both, you and the author, for working hard on this addon. All the best! |
