NPCScan  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 8.0.1.13
by: Torhal [More]

NPCScan helps you find NPCs by scanning nameplates, minimap vignettes, and mouseover targets, with an optional dynamic targeting keybinding. Once an NPC is found by one of these methods, an on screen alert is displayed and an audio alert is played.

Nameplates
Alerts will be triggered whenever a nameplate is created, if that nameplate belongs to one of the tracked NPCs. To use this feature with any reliability, the Interface->Names->Always Show Nameplates option must be turned on from the WoW Game Menu.

Dynamic Target Keybinding
NPCScan includes a key binding that will trigger a dynamically-generated targeting macro. Each time it is pressed, the key binding will trigger a /targetexact <mob name=""> for every tracked NPC in the current zone you are in, in addition to any custom NPC additions. This only attempts a search each time it is triggered; it is not a continuous search.

To access this feature, just set a keybind under the Key Bindings->AddOns->NPCScan->Targeting Macro section.

“Found” Alert
When an NPC is found, NPCScan alerts you by playing a loud and distinctive sound, making your screen pulse red, and displaying a Targeting Button for every NPC that is found.

Targeting Buttons
When clicked, the targeting button tries to target the NPC it depicts. You can also bind a key to trigger the newest button, in cases where multiple buttons are spawned.

Note: These buttons cannot be shown during combat. In the unlikely case that you do find a rare while fighting, the button or buttons will appear after you leave combat.

Options
NPCScan's main options window can be accessed from the Interface Options menu. To access the NPC list and other settings, type “/npcscan”.

New sounds can be added to the alert sound dropdown menu by installing SharedMedia.

    • No longer shows an alert button for tamable NPCs while resting (in an inn or city), although you will still need to clear the cache.
    • Added all localized mob names for zhTW, and as many as I could find for zhCN and koKR.
    • Added an “Unmute for alert sound” setting to play the alert sound even if WoW is muted.
    • Added an “Alert sound file” dropdown to choose which sound to play for alerts. Additional sounds can be added using SharedMedia-type addons.
    • The alert border flash now only shows when you enable “Screen Edge Flash” in the Default UI's Display Interface Options panel.

    • Achievements to kill rares now have their own lists in the options window.
    • Added slash commands to add and remove NPCs from the custom tracking list: “/npcscan add <NpcID> <Name>” and “/npcscan remove <Name>
    • You can now add tamable mobs to your search list and toggle them all using a “Search for tamable NPCs” setting.
    • Found alerts for tamable mobs will note that they are tamable and may be false alarms.
    • Added an option to suppress the “already cached” log-in alert.
    • Added Gondria to the default rare list, and updated some rares that are now tamable in 3.1.

Since author is really hard-headed about this moment, I ended up just patching .toc file myself to move database settings to profile level.

Just merge SavedVariable and SavedVariablesPerCharacter into one parameter:
## SavedVariables: _NPCScanOptions, _NPCScanOptionsCharacter

You'll have to concatenate one of your character settings to global file once it is done, then you'll have full database for all character, whenever you add new NPC.
Yep, that should work too. I don't mean to appear hard-headed about this; I'd actually really like to add profiles. It's just a matter not not having the time to work on new features like I used to. At the moment, most of my addon writing time is spent with an overhaul of _NPCScan.Overlay.

Well, let me explain.
There's no reason to have multiple NPC databases, since npc cache is a per-installation thingy.
I could imagine, if you need different sets of mobs to notify, although I'm not convinced: I have nine characters right now, including hunter, and I haven't faced a situation, where including/excluding mobs have any any effect.
The "challenge tames", even if marked as rares, are alive more often than not, since Blizzard removed any worthwhile drop from them.

I think you've got what I was asking a bit backward. I was asking if there was a way to easily consolidate the various mob lists into one master list (via profile or otherwise) that all characters then have access too. Right now, if I modify the custom NPCs on a single character, only that character gets the mob added to the NPCScan database. I then have to do what I noted below, which is copy that character's saved variable file to all other characters, which as you can imagine, is a bit of a PITA.

It is the very fact that NPCScan does not read from a master list that this question/request came to be.

Did you read my reply before the one you quoted?.... /facepalm
Yes there's a way. And I've showed it to you.

I found it. I'm not sure about the last part of your post (it's a bit vague, but I think I understand what you're telling me to do).

You'll have to concatenate one of your character settings to global file once it is done, then you'll have full database for all character, whenever you add new NPC.
If I read this right, once I make this change, instead of the /CharacterName/SavedVariables/_NPCScan.lua, I'll be using the root level _NPCScan.lua and appending to that, yes?

I've seen your recent posts and many of them are coming off as rather snide and rude, to be honest. My mistake was an honest one (I missed that particular post in the sequence of replies since my original post somehow), and I most certainly didn't deserve the response you just gave me.

I don't know if it's just being burned out from trying to help others and they just don't "get it" (and aren't really trying to get it, which would frustrate even me) or if it's just a natural way you respond to people, but you really are coming off as being mean to others. I completely understand if you're just at the "augh, not another one" stage - at some point I've run into that myself and when I get "there" I usually just throw my hands up and say "ok, let the poor sap screw things up on his own until he gets what he's doing wrong" instead of continuing and being trite.

My request for info/workaround wasn't a demand for Saiket - addon authors seldom do this for money and since I'm not paying for his time and effort, I can't really demand anything (nor would I - demanding seems so...selfish). I will try your suggestion, assuming I can make the change without screwing it up, something that's relatively easy to do when you're dealing directly with code. But that's what backups are for, no?

Which reminds me...I get to do my two tier backup now (sigh). Yay. Backup one 1 TB internal drive to an external 1 TB drive incrementally, then do a full clone of both to my 2 TB external for revisioning purposes. Thank goodness for utilities like Carbon Copy Cloner.

Right. If you know anything about Lua in general, I can explain details.

Let me be honest, it's been a LONG while since I've suggested this change first time.
And i'm quite tired of patching every addon release to make it works in the way that about every addon user, who have posted here so far, need it to be.
On another side of your perception of my post(s), I have to add (without any intention to be offensive), that reader's perception of a text greatly depends on reader's personality. Which doesn't excuse me for my very recent reply. It was rude, indeed... >.> Sorry.

I'm just using a raid level 1 on my server for most important data (Subversion repo and profiles directory.
X Tb hard drives aren't reliable at all. You can't infinitely increase writing density without hitting obvious physical limits.

I'll give it a go manually first. While I love detailed instructions so I don't screw things up, occasionally I do like to see if I still have a functioning brain cell or two. Access to a global custom list = teh yummies.

As for hunter rare spawns....if it's red, it's dead. Being that there are other mobs out there with identical models, aside from the challenge of the tame, that's 25g sitting inside that there mob and I'm by golly gonna snag it. I'll give that up when I start seeing non-ludicrous prices on the AH.

Well, as long as there is at least a workaround I generally give addon authors time to either deal with the issue or until I can find a suitable replacement that does what I want without adding bloat and/or messing with the physical way I play. I'm flexible like that.

An exception to that rule: I miss BuffOptions from CosmosUI....there isnt' one buff addon (Telo's BuffTimers is close but not configurable) that let me put green text for buffs not near expiration and dark orange for "hey, rebuff me nub!", while keeping them in a specific time format. Telo's BT uses xx:yy up to one hour, then reverts to Blizzard's craptacular "1hr+", where the old BuffOptions did xx:yy:zz (hours:min:sec), or any other method I could choose. In this case, I've just had to "deal with it". I not only had nowhere to ask for the feature to be put in, but nobody willing to bother updating BuffOption's mess of code (it relied on Sky, and the abysmally buggy Sea as dependencies, as well as the Khaos cosmos core). Sucks, but meh, whatchagonnado, ya know?

Eh, I'll be the first to admit there are times where I've been a hothead as well. I usually don't (in fact almost never) do any name calling, so at least there's that. My self-issue is too much ranting. I've learned to reign it in somewhat, but it's still a cross I bare. I'll eventually (I hope) get to a point where I can find alternatives to such no matter the situation.

Oh these backups are not online backups. They're powered down when not in use. I've had just as many live backups (RAID 1/10) fail as I've had HDs die on me. WD's 2 TB HDs are pretty well vetted as being reliable. It's the 3 and 4 TB HDs that are iffy, but not as much for the density as for another reason: Unless you're running a 64-bit operating system or an OS like Mac OS X whose core kernel (as of 10.6.7 and later) can read 64-bit LBA, those >2.1 TB HDs are an accident waiting to happen. Reemmber back in the day when LBA48 wasn't common and drives larger than 127 GB would seem to fail randomly? That was the OS trying to write to a sector it couldn't read properly. That is why I won't touch the larger drives. 2 TB? They're good, especially the WD Green drives. I use them as expansions to my DirecTV HD DVRs (my grandparents record a grand total of [drumroll] seventy one freaking different series.

And I'm tech support/troubleshooting/technician for that....on four DVRs. /cry

OK, I got your suggestion to work. At least I think I did. At first nothing I did would stick, but I soon checked the _NPCScan.lua at the SV root level and discovered that the space that was supposed to be between each of the saved variables functions (a carriage return) was somehow lost when TextEdit saved the document. I corrected that error and it appears to now use only the root level LUA file.

I needed this functionality because oldworld mobs are not listed in NPCScan by default, and some of them (such as Teremus the Devourer) lead to items that are pretty good for transmogrification, so as I found NPCs that I needed to watch for but weren't on the default lists, I added them. Great for instances too where I'm looking for a rare spawn.

Why didn't I think of this? Brilliant, good sir.

Until I tried it, that is. PEBCAK, I'm sure, but WoW will still overwrite it. I'm using Win7 64, I'm guessing there's an extra step I've overlooked.

No. WoW trying hard to overwrite it. Even making a directory with the same name to prevent ANY writes will fail from time to time.
I'm going to just set up cron job to kill that file every 5 min.

NPC Scan to Scan Objects?

Is there any way that NPCScan can be configured to alert you as items or objects spawn? I am trying to find an easier way to get the http://www.wowhead.com/achievement=1956 achievement. I'm assuming objects get added to your cache in the same way mobs do, therefore theoretically, this addon with a slight customisation can be used to track objects?

From what I remember, it's not possible.

Thumbs up Deleting the Cache file...

After using _NPCScan for a long, long while (and loving it), I finally wrote the #$@%@#%$ batch file I was thinking of the first time I found I had a need to delete the cache file....this is obviously specific to the location of my installation, which depends upon the 32/64 bitness of my system, and that I like to run the launcher...off we go!

WoWStart.bat

DEL/Q/F "\Program Files (x86)\World of Warcraft\CACHE\WDB\enUS\creaturecache.wdb"

It is possible only if the object has an ID number. I used NPC Scan to track down the rare raptor's nests to get the vanity pets.

Automatically turn on Targettracking?

I loove your addon.
I can't live without it and keep sane.

I would like to make a request for a new feature.

Whenever i fly around pandaria i by default have turned off the tracking of "Target" on the minimap.
However, whenever NPCscan triggers its really useful to see exactly where on the minimap that the mob is.

Would it be possible to add this as a feature to NPCscan? It could work just like how sound is unmuted when it triggers.

The code would be this (by using the texture it should work with any language):

Code:
for i=1, GetNumTrackingTypes() do
     local name, texture, active, category = GetTrackingInfo(i);
if (texture == "Interface\\Minimap\\Tracking\\Target" and active == nil) then
         SetTracking(i, true);
         break;
     end
 end
