MessageBoard  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 0.60a
by: ybe [More]

Due to several reasons, this project is up for grabs. I would like someone to move the project forward. It will in its entirety be transfered to you, and I will provide support for the code written so far. I would like to apologize to everyone for this mishap, but life can't be controlled. You will need to have knowledge of WoW LUA and XML. Send me a message, and we'll take it from there,

MessageBoard

It's a guild-wide message-board. That means it is a forum, like you know from web-based discussion-sites. The difference is that this is a 100% in-game WoW addon. It does not need a web-server, or a server-character that is always logged in, or external software, or anything special.

It is no secret that it's often difficult to get guildies to log in to the web-site to check messages. It's usually only the "hardcore" people that bother on a regular basis. This addon will help you. It requires no technical skills at all, beyond the ability to use a simple forum. Just install and play.

Changes from v0.55 RC1
[added] Custom layouts/skinning (see the file "layout.txt")

Requirements
You need to:
- install the addon
- be a member of a guild
(easy, eh?)

Usage
- To open MessageBoard, press the minimap icon.
- Hover the mouse over the minimap icon for positioning-help.

Features
- Custom layouts/skinning (see the file "layout.txt")
- Supports announcements, sticky topics and normal topics.
- Users can set an avatar.
- Administrators can be assigned by officer's note.
- The text-editor supports inserting item-links by dropping an item at the cursor.
- The database size is regulated by automatic pruning, by means of message-count.

Please note
It is easy to forget that you are not using a regular forum, but it's all within the limits of the WoW game. This means that when you log in, you must allow MessageBoard 2 to 3 minutes to update data. The time will vary dependent on several factors. But the more messages, the slower it updates. To not bore you with technicalities, suffice to say that it is because you are not using a real web-server and slow systems must get a chance too. The addons talk to eachother, so the more people in the guild that have the addon, the better.

Administrators
An admin is needed to set MessageBoard options, like message-limit for database pruning (auto-removal of old posts) and to set the main-page Administrator Message. The admin can also edit and delete any post. An admin is assigned by typing "#MB:A" (without quotes) in the officer's note in the WoW guild-roster. He or she will also need access to read the officer's note (in the WoW guild-roster rank settings) for the addon to be able to read it. Write-permission is not needed.

This seems to be caused by the slash-command, and should only happen if you typed "/mb".

I'll upload a new one in a few minutes.

Re: Evaluation and suggestions

At this point I can not give any estimates to my work-schedule, but rest assured it is not forgotten or abandoned.

Since we're using it for our forums, several of us would like the ability to have it take up the majority of the screen to make it easier to read the posts. I see the post about the moveanything addon and I'll see if that works and will post back.
Ah, yes. Several people wants that. It's not that it's difficult, but it's quite a lot of work and will take time. I do have this in the worklist, and a big (resizable or fullscreen) window is thought of for that.

2.) Currently in the mod you can only make a thread post and then make replies for that post. We would love the ability to be able to set up subjects then post multiple threads under each subject.
Yes... This is the most annoying for most users. It does however require quite some work internally with regard to the database and especially the transmission of data.
I probably will have to do this at some point in the near future.

3.) I know it was posted that a user level system is in the works. I'm not sure if this is part of your idea, but something where you can section off part of the subject for officer and above only would be awsome.
The user-level system is basically only thought to blacklist people from using it. Still no time-schedule, sorry.

I thought of these sections and protected areas for the first version, and also PM's was thought of with personal mailboxes. This was however stopped before it was coded, as it would be extremely insecure. Meaning that anyone with a minimum of programming-knowledge would be able to read the protected area (and PM's). So I scrapped that idea.
But I started thinking about it again today after reading your post, and I got an idea. Or at least the scetch for one. Without going into details, it would make password-protected threads. These would be invisible to those who do not have the password, and even if they read the saved database it would not be directly readable. No passwords would be transmitted anywhere, and upon knowing a password, the user must enter it in a password-list that MessageBoard would use to read the protected threads.
So it is possible, but there will be no guarrantee for the secrecy. After all; The code is readable even if the passwords will not be accessible.

4.) Also.....for waaaay future use......an interface kind of like Group Calendar has where multiple guilds can link up together and share sections of this mod based on which guild they are in.....for alliances and such. However, like I said, I'm sure this would be for much further in the future.
This is probably the feature I get asked most often about. Rest assured that I will make this, when I get some serious programming into my schedule again.

Evaluation and suggestions

First off I want to say how great this addon is. This addon actually took the place of our website forums. Everyone in my guild that is using it (which is pretty much everyone since I made it a requirement) is extremely happy with it and loves using it.

I would like to make a few suggestions for improvements though:
1.) A window resize capability would be terrific. Currently the mod only views within a small window......a resize or a bigger overall window would be great. Since we're using it for our forums, several of us would like the ability to have it take up the majority of the screen to make it easier to read the posts. I see the post about the moveanything addon and I'll see if that works and will post back.

Hope some of this helps. If I can be of assistance, please send me a pm and I'll get back.

Thank you for those very good words
Happy to hear that it has a use for you and your guild. There are "big" plans for this addon, and the todo-list includes some pretty cool stuff.

To mention two of those:
1. Cross-guild (alliances) forums
2. Plug-in interface. This enables anything you might want. MessageBoard will eventually be shipped with one plugin for creating polls.
This is however some considerable work, and will take some time to get up to speed as there are a lot of considerations to take.

I have more ideas for this fabulous addons, later will post it if u dont have problem.
A user-level system is on the todo-list, and read/write access is a part of that.

No problems with ideas

For those who have eyesight like me and think this board is kinda small, you can scale it with MoveAnything Addon by doing "/move MessageBoard_Main".

There is a new version coming in a couple of days that has this fix. Topics with no name will not save, and existing topics that has already been made with no name will be removed. So if anyone have these annoying topics, just download the version following 0.53 in a couple of days (current as of 24th july) and all should be fixed the next time you log in. The next version will most likely be 0.55 beta.

If all goes well (as it seems so far), the next release will be the last beta. The next version after that will basically be the same, but with additional clean-up in the code.

In addition, the next version have a new sorting scheme where the topics with the newest post will remain on top in the sorting order. Announcements on top, stickies after that, and normal topics after stickies. Within these "groups", the "sort by newest post" will apply.

Ouch... Stupid mistake there
I'll get that fixed for the next release.

This is definitely possible. The normal webforum way of doing it would be by the date of the last post in a topic. This would seem very natural and familiar to the users, I think.

I have made a welcome to the guild message which I would like to be the first messge and another listing the addons required by the guild but they are at the bottom of the topics.
These two posts would probably make good announcements, which would put them above the stickies in the topic-list. This can be changed in existing topics by editing the first post of a topic and selecting either announcement, sticky, or none in the editor. Then press save and the sorting will change.
Or if those two are the only that needs to be on top, put your welcome-message as an announcement, and the addon-list as sticky, and the rest as normal topics.

When I have changed to sort-by-date, all your normal topics will then be sorted by date.

Another function that I would like would be sub topics. I made a topic named for macros and would like to be able to enter a subtopic for each of the classes so others can enter and display the macros they use in game.
Sub-topics are possible, and it's on the "maybe" list. I doubt that will happen in any of these first beta-versions.

Blank Topics

Thanks for the last update!

I am now able to delete topics that have no messages but have found another problem. If a topic is made and left blank with no description i am unable to select and delete this topic.

I would also like to see topics that are sticky and be at the top of the list by the date entered or have a priority system where we can enter 001, 002, etc.. to set the priority they are displayed. The priority should only be able to be set by the admins of the MessageBoard. It seem that right now they are sorted alphabetically instead of by date. I have made a welcome to the guild message which I would like to be the first messge and another listing the addons required by the guild but they are at the bottom of the topics.

Another function that I would like would be sub topics. I made a topic named for macros and would like to be able to enter a subtopic for each of the classes so others can enter and display the macros they use in game.

I hope this is not asking too much. Just my thoughs on your addon and maybe you have not thought of these suggestions.

I would like to say that those that have installed your addon like it and the possiblities it can bring to our guild.

Good work!
Thanks

If it gets very popular, maybe they will
