NPCScan  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 8.0.1.13
by: Torhal [More]

NPCScan helps you find NPCs by scanning nameplates, minimap vignettes, and mouseover targets, with an optional dynamic targeting keybinding. Once an NPC is found by one of these methods, an on screen alert is displayed and an audio alert is played.

Nameplates
Alerts will be triggered whenever a nameplate is created, if that nameplate belongs to one of the tracked NPCs. To use this feature with any reliability, the Interface->Names->Always Show Nameplates option must be turned on from the WoW Game Menu.

Dynamic Target Keybinding
NPCScan includes a key binding that will trigger a dynamically-generated targeting macro. Each time it is pressed, the key binding will trigger a /targetexact <mob name=""> for every tracked NPC in the current zone you are in, in addition to any custom NPC additions. This only attempts a search each time it is triggered; it is not a continuous search.

To access this feature, just set a keybind under the Key Bindings->AddOns->NPCScan->Targeting Macro section.

“Found” Alert
When an NPC is found, NPCScan alerts you by playing a loud and distinctive sound, making your screen pulse red, and displaying a Targeting Button for every NPC that is found.

Targeting Buttons
When clicked, the targeting button tries to target the NPC it depicts. You can also bind a key to trigger the newest button, in cases where multiple buttons are spawned.

Note: These buttons cannot be shown during combat. In the unlikely case that you do find a rare while fighting, the button or buttons will appear after you leave combat.

Options
NPCScan's main options window can be accessed from the Interface Options menu. To access the NPC list and other settings, type “/npcscan”.

New sounds can be added to the alert sound dropdown menu by installing SharedMedia.

    • Removed the rare raptors from default settings, since they no longer drop pets.
    • Removed the mostly obsolete “Search for Tamable NPCs” option.
    • Now uses ZoneIDs instead of map file names to locate tamable mobs. Consequently, The Razza now gets detected accurately in Dire Maul.

    • Rewrote the screen border flash so that it should never conflict with other mods that use it.

    • Now manages which overlays are shown by the RareSpawnOverlay and _NPCScan.Overlay addons.
    • Added four rare raptor mobs that drop non-combat pets in 3.2: Dart, Takk the Leaper, Ravasaur Matriarch, and Razormaw Matriarch.
    • No longer shows an alert button for tamable NPCs while resting (in an inn or city), although you will still need to clear the cache.

    • Added an “Unmute for alert sound” setting to play the alert sound even if WoW is muted.
    • Added an “Alert sound file” dropdown to choose which sound to play for alerts. Additional sounds can be added using SharedMedia-type addons.
    • The alert border flash now only shows when you enable “Screen Edge Flash” in the Default UI's Display Interface Options panel.
    • Now continues searching for rares in 5-man dungeons. Raid dungeons, battlegrounds, and arenas will still disable scanning, however.
  • 3.1.0.1:
    • Achievements to kill rares now have their own lists in the options window.
    • Added slash commands to add and remove NPCs from the custom tracking list: “/npcscan add <NpcID> <Name>” and “/npcscan remove <Name>
    • You can now add tamable mobs to your search list and toggle them all using a “Search for tamable NPCs” setting.
    • Found alerts for tamable mobs will note that they are tamable and may be false alarms.
    • Added an option to suppress the “already cached” log-in alert.
    • Added Gondria to the default rare list, and updated some rares that are now tamable in 3.1.

Anyhow, I spent many hours making a Custom List with possibly every rare spawn in the game, that's including all of the 1-60 ones and rare dungeon bosses such as Panzor and Meshokk. I made a video as well on how to attach this list to your characters. I just really want to spread the joy of finding rares in the old world, not only level 60+ zones.

So yeah, here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PUDlmzb-h4
I appreciate the great list from Beikon and the great addon from Saiket. Is there a way to add Beikon's list to the default addon so that we dont have to search it and download it from other sites. I've tested the list in duskwood and it found all of the rares. The manual copying of NPCScan.lua in all the saved variables works but I guess there is a global way to do this. Maybe you could add this to possible improvements with a low priority tag on it.
Thank you.

No, it search for listed mobs.

Just the way it described in README.
when you clear the cache you clear the 2 sub folders in the cache one or the cache itself?
You just delete the creaturecache.wdb file.

Skoll

Trying to get Skoll from Storm Peaks, and it doesn't say it's cached when I clean cache etc. But then suddently when I log on, it says that Skoll is cached, does this mean someone else got to him or what? Cus I'm using a /Tar Skoll macro too and he wasn't cached when I logged off.

Nothing more than what I said.
I know he's tameable.
And you're unable to make the next logical step yourself?
Sorry to ask, but what is your graduation? Like, have you finished elementary school?
What I meant was that I get a message that is something like "the following pets were cached while resting" when I'm not even in the zone.
And what is unclear in that message for you?
You were resting and your client spotted that mob - obviously, it was someone's pet. Or it's not obvious to you?

No need to be a douche, is it that time of month for you? When I saw it as someones pet it said "False alarm!", and not this. What if I haven't finished elementary school? How retarded don't you feel now.

Can you add an option to have a log or a tab in chat or database that prints out the last time/coordinates the rare spawn was detected? (Could also have an option of how many npc's have been found in the history, possibly from the last 5 to the last 20) (Also an option to display time in 24-hour or 12-hour)

For example, it could work as this:

/npcdb
Last 5 Found Mobs:
May 26, 2011 - Loque'Nahak [11:08:32] @ 71.33, 51.66 (Scholozar Basin)
May 26, 2011 - Arcturis May [11:45:51] @ 54.71, 32.11 (Orgrimmar - Pet)
May 28, 2011 - Loque'Nahak [03:30:42] @ 56.21, 43.77 (Orgrimmar - Pet)
May 30, 2011 - Skoll [21:01:03] @ 78.80, 55.54 (Storm Peaks)
June 2, 2011 - Skoll [06:38:22] @ 34.88, 67.22 (Tol Borad - Pet)

Addon recognised but non-functional

Hello, I have a problem similar to Thorgan o something on page 5, and that is that wow finds it and "loads" it despite it being out of date; but when I enter the game writing /npcscan actually does nothing but prompt the message "type /help..."
I'm using windows xp, see no errors when trying to run the addon, and double checked a thousand times the location of the mod in the folders.
Any ideas??

Custom sound issue

Hello! I have a problem with adding a custom sound. I use the SharedMedia addon you linked to and set all the files up correctly, at least I think so because they show up in the "Alert sound file" drop down menu.

But they doesn't play in-game. I've tried .wav, .mp3 (128 bitrate) and .ogg, and different lengths. Not all of the files show up, all .wav files do show up, only one of the .mp3 files and the .ogg file not at all (they're all registered in the MyMedia.lua file).

I'm going out on a limb here.... I think it's a matter of the same questions being asked before so the tolerance level is a bit low.

Don't think he's a douche for answering the question just be glad he did at all. I'm not defending anyone's behavior just throwing out a possible.
