Hi, my name is Thaoky, and I'm an Altoholic

Altoholic is an Ace 3 add-on written for people who dedicate most of their time to leveling alts, and who want to have as much information as possible in one place.


IMPORTANT NOTE:

I am back in the game since 28/12/2020.

If you are upgrading from a version below 9.0.003, YOU MUST CLEAR YOUR SAVED VARIABLES !!

This means cleaning the following files in \WTF\Account\<your_account>\SavedVariables : Altoholic.lua & All DataStore*.lua



About the add-on:

The add-on has been in development since December 2007 and was officially released in late March 2008. It provides you information about your alts (bags, mails, AH, etc...) without having to reconnect them all the time.

About the author:

I was born in '76 (you do the math) and I work as a Project Manager + Software Architect + Full Stack Web Dev (yup, multiple hats) in a large multinational, so my coding time is limited, and Work > Gaming.

I live in Belgium, and obviously play on EU only.

Assistance will be provided on a best effort basis, but in any case always be polite and respectful when asking for help, I am neither a teenager, nor a punching ball. I am a cool guy with people who are cool with me. Respect that rule and we'll be fine.

2020/12/28: Due to Teelo's actions, I have reverted his changes and resumed development based on my latest version of the code. Some of his new features are temporarily not available anymore, some are gone forever. The main Shadowlands features will be back though, just be patient.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR 8.0 : As with every new expansion, many things have changed in the API, and it is REQUIRED to clear your Saved Variables for the addon.
This means cleaning the following files in \WTF\Account\<your_account>\SavedVariables : Altoholic.lua & All DataStore*.lua

There WILL be bugs if you use your old files without cleaning them first.
Some fixes to work around API changes are too time consuming, so cleaning is required. A meagre price to pay once per expansion.

- Fixed an issue where sorting the bags while the merchant frame is opened would trigger a slow down (Thanks Belazor !)

Hi,

I went ahead and deleted my cache wdb folder and all Blizzard folders within The interface/addons folder. I then deleted all reference to Altoholic form all folders in saved Var. I then proceeded to remove all blizzard files from WTF folder including savedvariables.lua etc. I then downloaded a fresh copy even though it is exactly the same still did it anyway especially after all the other stuff thought it would be nice and easy anyway.

Any yes for what ever reason I now have Altoholic on my Fubar please don't ask why all I know is that I have basically reset WOW to a new install and something at some stage must have become corrupt and effected your addon and no other addon which is really weird. Who really cares it works and thanks for all your help and patience and a great addon.

Hope you can work away around the mailbox issue with Beancounter and other Auction House addons for recording purposes as what I have done is disabled the addon for my auctioneer toons only and therefore still get full use so doing well.

Hope you have a great time at WWI wish I could go but am to disabled and in Australia doesn't help so if you can tell us what you thought etc that would be appreciated heaps.

I'm glad it's working now, I could not think of any reason why it didn't want to appear, normally a full cleanup of the WTF folder should have been enough, but anyway .. :/

About the WWI, it was great, the D3 anouncement was amazing, seeing a guy come up on stage with a guitar and play the first notes of the Diablo theme was a great idea from Blizzard. I had a chance to put my hands on WotLK, but there's really not much you can do in 20 minutes, so I made some sightseeing. The machine I was on didn't allow me to play the DK, but I'm not worried, I'll test it in the beta

I also tested SC2, all 3 races, and they feel great, it still feels as magic as SC1, and the devs have shown us some cool techniques that will bring a lot to the gameplay. I guess we'll still be playing blizzard games in 5 years

Thanks for letting me know appreciate it would have been great to go and see. Glad Diablo3 coming out some time in the late future lol love Diable.

Also thanks for the feed back on WotLK ashame you couldn't play a Death knight hope I get to be a beta participant but knowing my luck hope in hell lol.

Not a big Starcraft fan but lots of mates are but must admit it sounds food doesn't it.

PS: You have any time frame in regard to the AH mail box issue or is it on the back burner as low priority just curios not pushing just so you know. As I said all toons except one using it and that my auctioning toon so no reall biggy but would like the full functionality.

I'm almost done with the GUI update, so I think I should start looking into this by the end of the week. In the meantime, one thing you can try is something I had mentioned in an earlier post.

It seems that the issue was related to the mailbox, and that apparently BeanCounter was expecting mails to be unread, and Altoholic marks them read by default in order to read the body of a mail, but if you don't need this feature, you can disable the option "scan mail body" since it's not required to read attachments. It might be worth giving it a try if you haven't already.

Hi,

Your idea worked perfectly. As soon as I disabled "Scan Mail Body (Mark as Read)" it all works perfectly. However what are the consequences of disabling this part of your addon will impact something else as ussually disabling something like that has a cause and effect problem or maybe in this case not. What ever the case its working great and I am thrilled that it is makes life so much easier thanks heaps. If you think this is all that needs doing then maybe a little note for people so they are aware and don't bother you if they use auction mods to make sure to disable that part of the addon. Just a suggestion.

The way it works is simple. Whenever a mail is read, I can decide to only check attachments or to include the body of a mail as well. If for instance you have a mail like this:

"Hi, blablabla ..."
Attached gold: 10G
Attached items: 3

There will be 3 entries in the addon for the attachments, 1 for the gold, and 1 for the mail text (gold+text are sometimes combined if I remember correctly). If you disable this option, you will simply not get the mail text. All the rest will works normally.

The reason why this is configurable is that the API function that reads the body of a mail marks it "as read", which is disturbing for some users, and obviously for some other addons as well.

I'll add tooltips to most options soon, it will be more obvious.

Hi Thaoky, just thought I'd follow up with the errors I reported. I still get that error (and a few more), but after some testing of various scenarios, I'm pretty sure something's messed up on my end (probably with my SV file). Anyway, just for completeness (and so I don't spam this page a with wall of bug traces), I'm going to list those errors in the same bug report just in case you want to take a look.

Well, apparently that wasn't it. Fresh SV file, logged into a bunch of toons, then went and created my new rogue, and got it again.

I forgot to copy it before I quit, but I do know it was the 1512 line error from BuildCharacterInfoTable, and originated with the ToggleUI-OnClick thing (since it happened when I hit the minimap button). It still showed my bank toon on another server (only alt I've logged in on that isn't on my main's server), if that helps any.

Well, if you tell me that you still see an alt that isn't supposed to be there after cleaning the SV file, then I guess you deleted the wrong SV file ..

In earlier versions, I was registering an SV file per character, which was basically useless (it was there since the beginning, I wasn't sure if I'd need it or not back then), so are you sure you're not deleting this one ?

If you're deleting in WTF/account/your_account/savedvariables/Altoholic.lua, you're deleting the right one. Be sure to delete Altoholic.lua.bak as well.

If you're deleting in WTF/account/your_account/savedvariables/YOUR_REALM/character/Altoholic.lua, you're not.

Anyway, as I made a few changes in my version to change the GUI, and part of these changes should reduce the risk of such error, which I really think is due to a corrupt SV file. Let me know how things turn out.

I only have the one SV file (plus backup) in the WTF/Account/{ACCOUNT}/SavedVariables directory.

When the error occurs, I can't see any data for any characters on the current realm, but a valid alt still appears from another realm. All inventory data shows up properly; only items in the character area are missing.

I'm going to experiment a bit, starting with replacing the color return from line 1512 with a static color.

I agree that it's probably a bad SV file; I just can't figure out what's corrupting it, since it happens after a "fresh start". I also can't find a predictable pattern to reproduce it yet, which makes it even more frustrating.

If I can't discover any more useful information, I'll just wait until the next version arrives to see what happens.

Edit: Argh, I probably should have mentioned this before, but I use Altoholic without externals. Maybe there's something wrong with one of the libraries on wowace?

Can you please try a simple thing ?

Edit Altoholic.lua in the addon's directory, and change line 1512 from :

return self.ClassInfo[ self.Classes[class] ].color

to :

return Altoholic.ClassInfo[ Altoholic.Classes[class] ].color


I fell upon a similar problem yesterday, and it seems that under certain conditions, the self pointer is not valid anymore. It definitely fixed the problem on my side.

edit: if it still doesn't work, I just uploaded the latest version from files.wowace.com

Hehe, I had just updated before checking back here. Looks like that change is in the latest version, so I'll test it and let you know if anything comes up.

Also, thanks for the great support you provide. I know it takes time away from other things (namely playing the game), so it's very much appreciated!

Edit: Working well so far. Two little things I noticed:
  1. If I change the option to display max rested XP as 150%, the change doesn't show in the "Summary" panel until I close and reopen the window.
  2. It seems Altoholic calculates rested XP with the assumption that the character is logged out in an inn. (At least that's my guess, since the values are about 4x what they should be.)

Yes indeed, I've been playing a bit less lately, not too much of a problem since I've reached my goal (9x70), I'll grind some more money for wotlk (target: 20k gold, currently 14.5k), but other than that, I'm only raiding or doing some heroics.

1) I'll have to make a test, it's probably nothing more than a missing refresh, should be fixed quickly.

2) It was the case in the earliest versions, I assumed the character was logged out at an inn, but this has been implemented and tested quite a while ago, maybe the recent changes impacted it. Can you give me an example of wrong data ? (current xp, current rest xp as reported by another addon, like x-perl, current level)

If you want to remove the bank of "guild name 1", just remove that part. I think I'll implement a possibility to delete a bank from the gui soon.
