Altoholic  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 10.2.007
by: Thaoky [More]

Hi, my name is Thaoky, and I'm an Altoholic

Altoholic is an Ace 3 add-on written for people who dedicate most of their time to leveling alts, and who want to have as much information as possible in one place.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

I am back in the game since 28/12/2020.

If you are upgrading from a version below 9.0.003, YOU MUST CLEAR YOUR SAVED VARIABLES !!

This means cleaning the following files in \WTF\Account\<your_account>\SavedVariables : Altoholic.lua & All DataStore*.lua

About the add-on:

The add-on has been in development since December 2007 and was officially released in late March 2008. It provides you information about your alts (bags, mails, AH, etc...) without having to reconnect them all the time.

Supporting development:

You might not know this, but add-ons do not write themselves.
If you want to help development, or simply show your appreciation, use one of the following ways:

About the author:

I was born in '76 (you do the math) and I work as a Project Manager + Software Architect + Full Stack Web Dev (yup, multiple hats) in a large multinational, so my coding time is limited, and Work > Gaming.

I live in Belgium, and obviously play on EU only.

Assistance will be provided on a best effort basis, but in any case always be polite and respectful when asking for help, I am neither a teenager, nor a punching ball. I am a cool guy with people who are cool with me. Respect that rule and we'll be fine.

Availability:

2020/12/28: I am back in the game.

Current Issues:

2020/12/28: Due to Teelo's actions, I have reverted his changes and resumed development based on my latest version of the code. Some of his new features are temporarily not available anymore, some are gone forever. The main Shadowlands features will be back though, just be patient.

Credits:
  • I'd like to thank my guild, Odysseüs on EU-Marécages de Zangar, for assisting me since the earliest phases, thanks guys for everything you've done
  • Thanks to the all the people who have supported the add-on since 2008, and also all those of you who came on board later.
  • Thanks to all the guys who have helped with code/translations/bug tracking.. and well, project support in general, especially during my long absences. Such projects can be long and tedious, it is good to not feel alone

Join the #altoholic IRC channel on Freenode : irc://irc.freenode.net:6667/

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR 8.0 : As with every new expansion, many things have changed in the API, and it is REQUIRED to clear your Saved Variables for the addon.
This means cleaning the following files in \WTF\Account\<your_account>\SavedVariables : Altoholic.lua & All DataStore*.lua

There WILL be bugs if you use your old files without cleaning them first.
Some fixes to work around API changes are too time consuming, so cleaning is required. A meagre price to pay once per expansion.

How to support Altoholic's development :

- Use the donate button either on Curse or on WoW Interface
- Support me on Patreon : https://www.patreon.com/Thaoky , the page is still being setup, it might take a few days before it can be used, I still need a banner.
- Make a gift from my amazon's wish list : http://amzn.eu/7xWdnbZ

If you like the addon, consider supporting it, this has been the long term effort and commitment of a single person. #OneManArmy

Well, unfortunately I don't really know where else to report things other than the named addon, or addons if I can find them in the reported trace.
Blizzard bug tracker of course. Oh, sorry, they don't have a bug tracker... seems, like you're squared...

O.o that's rather strange, but, well... let's call it a bit slow. Try reducing gfx settings and see if it gets any better.

If you mean the graphics settings on the wow client, they're already low. I think the only thing I have off 'low' is sparkles on items like herbs and stuff.

Display is windowed (because I really do need to be able to swap out to other things sometimes.)
Graphics slider is set to low
textures are resoluton: low, filtering: bilinear, projected: disabled
Environment is fair, fair, fair
Effects are shadow quality: low, liquid detail: low, sunshafts: disabled, particle densit: good, SSAO: disabled
Under Advanced: triple buffering: disabled, reduce input lag: disabled, hardware cursor: enabled, api: directx9
max foreground fps slider is set under the e in foreground. max background fps is halfway between the M aand the left edge.

If you mean fussing with the nvidia config on my machine, it may need more explicit instructions. I looked at it, and didn't see anything that was explicitly 'make your graphics llower' type of setting.

I do appreciate the help - perhaps we should take this off the Altoholic page?

I'm afraid, I can't help you any further without sitting in front of your box. Given my 15 years experience in tech support, I'd rather refrain from guesswork, than try and confuse someone, or damage his/her equipment even further.
I would only recount my graphics settings, in case they would be helpful:
Windowed mode, 1x multisampling, enabled VSync (usually it'll lower framerate, but will save some system resources as well, which othervise would've been spent on calculating new frame, that wouldn't be fully displayed.)
Texture resolution: Low, Filtering: Biliner, Projected textures: disabled.
View distance: Good, Environment details: Low (this, as well as groun clutter, is really a CPU eater, especially in Cata and MoP zones), Ground clutter: Low. (Aside from being a CPU eater, it'll help with some quests and achievements, when there's little to no ground clutter.)
Shadows: Low, Liquid details: Fair (if you have a gfx card, that can handle pixel shaders, the difference in Low and Fair here is only visual, and Low looks terrible), sunshafts: disabled, Particle density: Good (fishing pools, yep.), SSAO: Disabled.
Advanced gfx:
Triple Buffering: Enabled. You may want to experiment with this settings, though.
Reduce input lag: Disabled.
Hardware cursor: Enabled. (Honestly, 99,999% modern video cards don't have any issues with hardware cursor.)
gfx API: I don't have choice, as I'm using Windows XP.

Thumbs up BoA items

Is there any chance a specific BoA filter could be added? With all the new blues added in mists it's getting harder to keep track of which alt has what!

Thanks for this lifesaving addon.

Still missing recipes?

I'm reinstalling altoholic in the hopes of getting rid of errors (as suggested by someone on a forum thread I started). One of the things I have been feeling the lack of is the recipe list for cooking, first aid, and other professions. I Noticed, last night, that a search for 'dark iron' was picking up that two of my toons can smelt it, which is not a usual trainer thing, so I'm somewhat confused that I'm not picking up recipes in other professions.

ETA: For at least some of the toons, I had to open the profession pane two or three times - at least once, across three login - before there was even a count of recipes showing in the skills section off the starting window. First aid tended to show up on one opening, cooking it would take two, and some primary professions would be two and some would need three. It did not seem correlated to how many recipes there were.

I'm just glad I found a way to make this work again. Hopefully the other errors will stop also. (Tho I've already had two pop during this reinstall/repopulate process.)

So far, there's only BoA weapon, one trinket, and one necklace. I don't have an issue tracking it across my ten toons.

Sadly, I can only add my voice to this isse.
Any tradeskill, that has sub-categories, missing them in altoholic.

Altoholic ... meh, check the page 4 of comments, we've had related discussion here already.

It depends on the amount of recipes learned. Altoholic (rather, DataStore) need to query information for every item involved in every crafts, but WoW servers throttling this information, so it not always propagated by the first reading.

Speaking of your "script ran too long" issues, did you made suggested adjustment I mentioned on page 2 (should be towards the end of page).

If you're keeping track of all of these in your head, you're a much better player than I am!

It's really simple. Your character either have one or not. Keeping track is not something I do. (And yes, bar the Umbrella and Jade Infused Blade, I have them all. Those obtainable in game, I mean.)

Parsing Recipe Levels from Tooltips not working

I recently noticed that Altoholic incorrectly shows some recipes as learnable by another character (the character has Cooking at 160, yet some recipes that require Cooking 175 were green).

Digging in the source I noticed that the function GetRecipeLevel (in Altoholic.lua) just looks for something numeric and matches on "Use: Restores XX health", giving a completely wrong value.
It seems that the order of lines in the tooltip has changed (probably in one of the last WoW patches); the "Requires Cooking (175)" which was formerly at the beginning of the tooltip is now at the end.

I fixed this problem by changing the pattern in string.find to "%(%d+%)" (so it's only searching for numbers in brackets); but I'm not sure whether this works for all recipes.
For some strange and unknown reason, the second time I hover over a recipe, the link passed to GerRecipeLevel is completely missing the "Requires ..." line, causing the function to fail. I've added a "return 0" to the end of the function, which prevents the addon from causing errors and seems to be working for now -- but this is probably just a quick&dirty fix.

btw: the "..\AddOns\Altoholic\Tooltip.lua line 337: attempt to compare number with nil" error which sometimes comes up is also caused by GetReipeLevel failing to parse the tooltip and returing "nil" -- the "return 0" also fixes this problem.

I've been having an annoying thing recently with altoholic, the character tab only shows one icon in the pane on the left, where it used to have a whole range of icons. I was wondering what might cause this, or if there is a dependency that may be bugged?

It was chnaged since... well, some long time since. Use top icons to manipulate views.
Pro tip: all comparison grids moved to the "Grids" tab.

I did, thanks... for what it's worth 'Grids' is somewhat ambiguous title. Oh, and there is still the 'ranged' slot in the Eqipment Grids.

- Updated both Achievements & Grids tabs to show 11 characters per realm.
- Support for tabards is back.

Do not expect too many changes as I am not playing the game anymore; I don't want to start a debate, but dailies litterally killed the fun for me.

I do intend to keep supporting the addon when new patches/expansions hit (my subscription is still active).
