Gnomish Yellow Pages  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: r48beta
by: lilsparky [More]

The Gnomish Yellow Pages will monitor all chat traffic to identify people advertising trade skills. As trade skill ads are identified, they are recorded and stored for later retrieval.

type:
/gyp

to bring up a window with all information in an easy to read table.

strangers names appear in white
guildmates are displayed in green
friends are displayed in yellow

anybody in your local zone is shown in cyan

all offline players are red

the row of trade skill buttons will access the entire database of trade recipes so you can search for whatever recipe you wish. click to open whatever trade skill browser you use.

when browsing a trade skill, selecting a recipe will cause gyp to update the trade link color to light blue if that recipe is contained in that link. also any searches in the trade skill browser will be reflected in the gyp link color -- links that contain none of the recipes returned by the search will be dark yellow; normal yellow links indicate that at least one of the recipes in the browser window matches the trade link.

I've noticed no one has posted a comment for this yet, and it's been out for awhile. I guess I'll be the first.

I've been using this for some time now and I must say it is very valuable! I love the fact that I can go back and look to see who can craft something and then if I come across a quest where it requires a certain player made item (Hillsbrad cloak comes to mind), I can just go back and see who was advertising leatherworking, and then send them a message or an email. This also seems to add more to the community aspect of the game, since I actually have to find the name of the person and get in touch with them. It seems like it's less of a "HEY CRAFTER! I WANT TO BUY THIS ITEM!!!111", and more of an actual player that I'm talking to. Maybe it's just me, but I can't stand when you're in a group and people call each other by their class. "MAGE, SHEEP THIS! HEALER YOU STAY BACK!!!" That annoys me to no end.

Anyway, that was kind of a long way to say thanks I guess.

I agree completely with the OP. Not only is it a huge boon to the social crafting element of the game by being able to address queries to specific individuals by name, but it's damned convenient to be able to proactively find crafters that advertise but that aren't in a city at the time!

On a side note though, I do have a bug to report. When i activate the mod I lose the ability to "Show Offline Members" in my guild list. I can only see who's online at the time. When i deactivate just this mod it works fine.

What's weirdest is when I deactivate the mod, log in, tick the box to show offliners, log out, activate the mod and log back in again, for the first second of opening the guild list I can actually see all the names, but then I can watch the box being unticked, all the names for offliners disappearing, and once again then I can't activate the button again to get the names back.

Any chance this can be looked into? As besides this, it's a superb idea for a mod!

thanks!

gyp tries to keep tabs on where people are located using a few different methods.

first off, it uses your friends list to figure out if anybody advertising is listed there and if so, then it uses that list to figure out where people are.

next, it uses the guild list. the guild list, tho, has a toggle to show offline/online users. i figured it would be helpful to identify any advertisers in your guild -- even if they're offline. the result is that i need to modify that toggle. original complaints were that it wouldn't allow you to turn OFF that toggle, now i guess i broke it the other way! i'll figure it out eventually.

lastly, any players not in your guild or on your friends list will be put through a series of /who commands in the background. one every X seconds. this can be turned off (since it kind of messes with your ability to do /who's because of a throttling issues). this last tracker can be turned off via the interface/options panel (or the frequency can be altered to make it less intrusive).

Yeah, the updates are awesomely done, very well thought out, the guild pane issue was a bit of a pain tho, glad that can be sorted )

I have a suggestion too, not sure how easy it would be to implement though. You've called the mod Gnomish Yellow Pages, which gave me the idea. At the mo it records tradeskills, but is there any way you could, in the same way as you have tabs for each tradeskill, create tabs for group roles? If it were possible to record the people you grouped with that were actually any good for future contact, and their locations updated in the same way as the tradeskills that would be incredible.

Literally, tabs for Alchemy, Enchanting, Engineering, ........ , Tanks, Healers, DPS.

Adding the names manually ofc as and when you found people worth adding, then it really would be a yellow pages! As i said, I have no idea how hard it would be to implement, but I know that I for one don't have the space on my friends list for all the people i'd like to invite back to groups! If i could see it by role, literally tank, healer, dps, and inside that just each person's name, class, whether they're online at the moment, and if so where they are... That would make my 2009!

Just my two cents Let me know what you think of the idea, I'm intrigued to see whether it's something that's easily possible!

that's an interesting idea, but beyond the scope of this mod.

that said, i could see how the idea could work using a lot of the same basic ideas here. i just think mixing the two is confusing the purpose of the mod.

hmmm....the gnomish rolodex...

I'm questioning why Blizzard haven't implemented that sort of feature themselves? At Armory you can see which professions people have, but in-game you have to either use some mods that will keep track of shouts in chat, or spam trade yourself hopping that the crafter with particular design will be in town the same moment as you. I've ran into that problem numerous times while trying to buy some pre-TBC items for old quests.

I believe that someone at Wowhead forums posted an idea of a bulletin board in WoW where one would post his "quests" for other players to craft items for particular sum of money. In my opinion, that's a truly great which most likely will be never implemented. But if it was in game it would have saved people time spamming trade or paying ridiculous amounts of money in auction house.

I'll try your mod later today. Thanks for it.

okay, i see what the problem is. the tradelinks lib i'm including needs to updated for the latest patch.

in the meantime, you can download tradelinks directly from this site and it should correct the problem (assuming it's been updated).

aw man. what a time to release this mod. they just changed the format of the trade links which means that i have to retool a few things to get it working again....

Ill add this myself, Since post-patch GYP completly breaks most of MY tradeskills, when I attempt to craft, my window is empty, or it shows what items I can make but won't let me craft them. For some strange reason smelting is uneffected, till this is fixed I will have to delete this addon

But otherwise I did love it while it worked

r23beta should work with 3.0.8

note that i've switched to double-clicking for activation of links, whispers, and refreshing locations.
