Hi, my name is Thaoky, and I'm an Altoholic

Altoholic is an Ace 3 add-on written for people who dedicate most of their time to leveling alts, and who want to have as much information as possible in one place.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

I am back in the game since 28/12/2020.

If you are upgrading from a version below 9.0.003, YOU MUST CLEAR YOUR SAVED VARIABLES !!

This means cleaning the following files in \WTF\Account\<your_account>\SavedVariables : Altoholic.lua & All DataStore*.lua

About the add-on:

The add-on has been in development since December 2007 and was officially released in late March 2008. It provides you information about your alts (bags, mails, AH, etc...) without having to reconnect them all the time.

About the author:

I was born in '76 (you do the math) and I work as a Project Manager + Software Architect + Full Stack Web Dev (yup, multiple hats) in a large multinational, so my coding time is limited, and Work > Gaming.

I live in Belgium, and obviously play on EU only.

Assistance will be provided on a best effort basis, but in any case always be polite and respectful when asking for help, I am neither a teenager, nor a punching ball. I am a cool guy with people who are cool with me. Respect that rule and we'll be fine.

2020/12/28: Due to Teelo's actions, I have reverted his changes and resumed development based on my latest version of the code. Some of his new features are temporarily not available anymore, some are gone forever. The main Shadowlands features will be back though, just be patient.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR 8.0 : As with every new expansion, many things have changed in the API, and it is REQUIRED to clear your Saved Variables for the addon.
This means cleaning the following files in \WTF\Account\<your_account>\SavedVariables : Altoholic.lua & All DataStore*.lua

There WILL be bugs if you use your old files without cleaning them first.
Some fixes to work around API changes are too time consuming, so cleaning is required. A meagre price to pay once per expansion.

If so, that's part of the explanation. The errors that popped-up in your reports below are caused by DataStore trying to find data for alts where there is none. In that specific case, the main datastore module knows about one of your alts, but there is no data in datastore_currencies for that alt, which is not supposed to happen.

I've added safeguards, and I plan to add more to prevent those cases, but until then, I would suggest leaving the datastore modules activated, they do their work silently anyway. Or if you do disable them for an alt, then really disable all of them.

The only time I've disabled altoholic at *all* is when my FPS got so low that I was desperately disabling everything and then enabling things one a time to see what was going wrong. Unfortunately, that produced no effect, because I ended up with all of them enabled again and a reasonable FPS.

The only thing I can think of is that enabling altoholic again showed datastore as enabled, without enabling all the modules. I use ACP usually, since I don't have to log out and can just reload. That has a 'disable all' button and an 'enable all' button.

Whatever. I'm just never gonna disable it again. Ever. At all. I realize that the hassle is mine, I'm not blaming you for it at all! But it's way too much hassle to re-populate the database for 20+ alts more than once an expac.

This is awfully confusing, since I *had* removed all those files before I updated to the first version for Legion.

Thank you for reading everything, I do worry sometimes I give too much info.

At this point, I think I'm just never ever going to disable altoholic again. I still don't understand why the info isn't found when it's re-enabled.

My guess is that your saved variables might not have been cleaned for 7.0. What seems to happen is that for some character, datastore_currencies does not seem to have data. Most likely because you haven't logged it on for a long time. So I did a clean install, and started adding alts back.

I started on my main - Shu'halo, linked with Eitrigg. I added all the lower level toons on Shu'halo, the ones not even in Draenor yet: 6 toons, no apparent problems. 2 horde, 1 not in a guild. 4 Alliance, all in the same guild.

I started on my other random realms:
1 toon on Moonguard, that got created and never went anywhere, still in starting zone (but has gold). No apparent problem.
1 toon that I created on Scarlet Crusade to do the Running of the Gnomes. Picked up some mail (had gotten stuff from the AH), and went into the bank. I bought one bank bag, and put one of the bags I'd gotten in email into it - that's the only bank bag I bought. Toon is in a guild. As soon as I opened Altoholic, I got this error:

The *only* thing I can think of that I did differently is that the bank was OPEN when I opened Altoholic. o.O I logged out to look at toons and realms as I was writing this, and when I logged back in, I opened altoholic which showed the characters bag inventory, and which contentedly acquired the info from the bank and the professions.

The only reliable fix would be to disable all my addons. When I then re-enabled them one at a time, I usually ended up with all of them enabled again, 30fps, and no useful information as to why this was happening. On every toon I did this, Altoholic would be blank despite the fact that I had not removed the files. What I've just poked around and found out is that, since then, THOSE characters have blank Altoholic information - 'never', 'unknown', etc. OTHER characters who had not disabled anything are fine - except the display for the characters that had disabled things is also unknown, blank, etc. I had done a clean reinstall partway through the time period of having the bad FPS days. I can do a clean reinstall again, to see if that helps, but it's awfully annoying. I'd also like to know why disabling altoholic and then re-enabling it has the effect of removing the data. Especially now as it seems I'm not getting any data back. clueless in alt land -Barleduq

Ok, I'm clearly doing something completely wrong.

I have version 7.1.001. I spent yesterday going through most of my alts and populating the addon. I open up Altoholic to populate on a new toon today, and it shows all the toons I have on these linked realms (haven't gone to other realms yet), but ALL Of them have 'unknown' under Bags and Bank, on the bag usage view which showed up by default.

I think I might start including screenshots. Next toon, another bank alt, still no currency I believe, tho I can't tell what. This time, it's only showing 1 of the 3 other-realm toons I mentioned before, and this error popped up when I first opened it to populate it from this toon. I'm deleting my list of addons.

Starting to poke around

Sorry for the delay

Second toon I logged in - it seems to be collecting data - but when I clicked the 'currency' option on the sumary page, I got this message. Mind you, it's quite possible this character *has* no currency, it's one of my bank alts.

Interestingly enough, the three toons that are showing on the linked realm are still showing the values from the Account Summary display, which I had clicked just before the Currency display....
