Designated Driver

Version: 2.4.3-0.4
by: VagrantEsha [More]

Designated Driver: An Auto-Follow on Demand Mod

If you're like my room-mate and I then you probably get distracted easily and end up standing around when you could be going somewhere. It's nice to have the ability to have a friend or a guildie drive you somewhere if you need to be going somewhere, and that's just what Designated Driver does.

It builds a list of those who can drive you based on who's in your friends list, and then someone can simply say !dd in party chat (with the exclamation mark, that's important) to have you following them (providing they're a friend, of course!) and that's all there is to it.

If you're out of range, don't worry. Designated Driver will account for that and let your friend know, so there won't be any frustrated minutes spent wondering why the mod might not be working!

Short Version: If !dd is said in party chat by someone you have in your friends list, you start following them. If you're out of following range, the mod tells them that.

2.4.3-0.4

- First version of the rewrite of Designated Driver up on WoWI.

I love this addon, it helps me and my husband heaps. One thing I am wondering though is if it might be possible to add a command to get them to STOP following as well. Like some times we run our lower lvl toons through instances and it would be nice to be able to dump them off a bit before we get to the mobs so as not to aggro everyone in the room.

Anyone out there who can add this in or tell us how we might be able to? Thanks.

I understand you not updating the mod here .. but you should at least leave a description of what it does so people don't have to switch to other sites ...

Ah.

I'm not being nasty to Questhelper here or anything, but according to what I've seen from the chat on in-game servers, and its own pages even, it causes all sorts of problems.

If you want a solution that's 100 per cent guaranteed to work with most things (I run a lot of mods myself) then I'd recommend the following, each of these can be found on this very site:

- LightHeaded
- TourGuide
- TomTom (but only if you don't have Cartographer)

These three together have served me well. I've also advised people who've joined my guild to switch from Questhelper to those three, too, and I've heard nothing but glowing commendations. Those three are made by big names in the mod community, and not just that but old names, too. Therefore almost anything they put out is pretty much golden and trustworthy.

sorry....my bad for not being clear...

I was using the mod well...but one day it jus didn't worked. Cos it was the only new add on i added, thus i tot this was the one causing my screen freezes. BUT it wasn't ... i prowl thru the mac tech forum.... the culprit was QuestHelper...

So i took out QuestHelper....then i re added DD. Now it worked fine!

Sorry for not being concise on my error.

I've been using it for a while too without issues, becuase... you know, my guild needs it. Are you sure that Designated Driver is causing the problem?

Further, I'm not sure when the problem is occuring for you. The thing is, Designated Driver does nothing related to joining or leaving parties. If you're only having problems when joining or leaving a party, then it's a bug in something else, not designated driver. DD is brought into action purely by the CHAT_MSG_PARTY and CHAT_MSG_RAID events and they have no relation to party joining/leaving mechanics. In fact, the only thing they have any relation to is catching things which are said in party or raid chat.

Of course, it could be that it happens when someone says something when you enter party chat. If that's the case, could you check that? Simply ask someone to join a party with you and not say anything. If you don't freeze up in that instance, then DD is the cause and I'll try and look into it.

Or do you mean that DD is freezing when you leave a party whilst following, so if you leave a party when following without breaking the follow, it locks up? That'd be weird since DD just calls the FollowUnit() function, it's pretty basic stuff. It's possible though, as anything is. If that's the case, I'll look into it.

The whole thing that makes me suspicious though is that those I party with have been using DD for a long while now, and I play the game a lot myself, and I've encountered no lockup errors. And that the times when you see the freezes aren't times when DD is actually doing anything. So I'm really thinking it's another mod you have that's causing these problems.

Still, if it is DD, let me know what your research turns up and I'll look into it.

DD isn't the only mod you're using, right?

Hm... perhaps disabling all of your mods and then re-enabling them one at a time and getting someone to help with joining/leaving party would tell you exactly where the problem is.

I really would like to help, but other than what I've already covered... I can't think of anything. Sorry.

Gaejin:

Nah. We're Horde. Horde knows how to party. A funny comment though, nonetheless!

Skan:

That's the way it's planned! Lazy as well as drunken too, generally speaking. And I still have a few ideas on how to improve the thing and make it even more easy to use, with little effort.

I'm thinking of making it so that the functionality that has a single person following can be triggered just by typing only part of their name, a simple string.find can do that.

And any other ideas that come to mind, do share 'em. I'm always open to suggestions!

play on their Virtual Boys
LOL this caused me to raise an eyebrow, until I googled it and found that it was a Nintendo Game Boy-ish disaster from 1995 that lasted only a year. I don't recall even hearing about it, so LOL yea... that made me pause for a few just the way it was worded... men drunk... playing on a virtual boy... a guild of priests? (yea I went there)
