NeedToKnow: Simple, effective timer bars

Track specific buffs, debuffs, and cooldowns with bars that always appear in the same place in the same color. NeedToKnow is great for short buffs and debuffs you use a lot. For example, a rogue could show bars for Slice and Dice, Rupture, and Garrote.

  • Easy to set up
  • Works with spells, abilities, items, totems, procs, and internal cooldowns
  • Track more than one spell or ability with one bar
  • Works with Retail and Classic WoW

Other features
  • Save setups for different specializations
  • Track by name or spell ID
  • Show cast time indicator to see when to refresh buffs and debuffs before they finish
  • Make bars deplete at same rate to see which will finish first
  • Blink bars when buff or debuff missing
  • Track buffs on raid members without having to focus them

Instructions

General options are available in the Blizzard interface options menu. You can type "/needtoknow" or "/ntk" to lock/unlock the addon. To configure individual bars, right click them while unlocked. Bars work while locked. If you only see full bars that aren't changing in response to anything, they are unlocked! Just type /ntk to lock them and get them working for you.

You can enable more groups of bars by going into the Interface settings off the main menu and choosing the AddOns tab.

When entering your settings, be careful with your spelling and capitalization. Also remember that buffs and debuffs sometimes have different names than the items and abilities that apply them. The Death Knight ability Icy Touch, for example, applies a DoT called Frost Fever.

On each bar you can enter in multiple buffs/debuffs deliminated by commas. They are prioritized according to order.
i.e. "Rake, Lacerate" - If both are applied, will display Rake until it expires and then it will track Lacerate
i.e "Curse of Recklessness, Curse of Exhaustion, Curse of Shadows" - Good way to track single instance curses

If you wish to use SpellID, make sure you are using the correct one!

FAQ

Why won't NeedToKnow work for me? I set it up but the bars just sit there at full, not moving or tracking anything.
The bars only time things when the addon is locked. Type "/needtoknow" or "/ntk" to lock/unlock the addon. You can also use the buttons in the AddOns tab of the Blizzard Interface Options menu.
Why won't NeedToKnow track this buff/debuff? It works for other things.
Check your spelling and capitalization. Also remember that buffs and debuffs sometimes have different names than the items and abilities that apply them. The Death Knight ability Icy Touch, for example, applies a DoT called Frost Fever. If you're using a SpellID, make sure you have the correct one.
How do I track multiple buffs or debuffs on a single bar?
Enter the name of each buff/debuff separated by commas. They are prioritized according to order. For example, "Rake, Lacerate" will display Rake until it expires and then it will track Lacerate. "Curse of Recklessness, Curse of Exhaustion, Curse of Shadows" is a good way to track single-instance curses.
How do I get more bars?
You can enable more groups of bars by going into the Interface settings off the main menu and choosing the AddOns tab. If four groups of six bars isn't enough for you, consider another timer bar addon. Also consider rethinking your UI.
How do I get NeedToKnow to track my own DoTs but not those applied by other members of my class?
Select "Only show if cast by self" in the bar's configuration menu.

Internal Cooldown starts a bar when an aura is applied to the player and the bar lasts for a time you have to type in. Spell Cooldown will also usable items (like your trinket), but you type in the name of the trinket and not the buff.

I can't get this addon to work

How do you assign a buff to a bar? I've been trying to get this addon to work for over a week and I haven't had any luck. I understand how to change the settings for cooldown and such, but I've had no luck assigning a buff from a spell, or a trinket to a bar. I've heard great things about this addon, but so far it's the most frustrating addon I have ever used.

I'm wanting to track:
Arcane Power
Mirror Image
Icy Veins
Presence of Mind
Shard of the Crystal Heart (trinket)
Talisman of Resurgence (trinket)

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: I can't get this addon to work

Icy Veins
Presence of Mind
Shard of the Crystal Heart (trinket)
Talisman of Resurgence (trinket)
You found that you can right click a bar to get options for it, right? Let's take Icy Veins for example. Start by choosing the "Clear Settings" option at the bottom (this is just so I know where you're starting from.) Then:
  • "Choose buff/debuff to time" and type Icy Veins into the box that appears.
That's it, the defaults of everything else are correct for a self buff like that.

If you want to watch the cooldown of Icy Veins, then
  • "Choose buff/debuff to time" and type Icy Veins into the box that appears.
  • "Bar Type" -> "Spell Cooldown"

Item usage (like your trinkets) is also treated as a spell. So:
  • "Choose buff/debuff to time" and type in Talisman of Resurgence
  • "Bar Type" -> "Spell Cooldown"

Then type /ntk to switch from Config mode to Play mode (the bars should disappear until you get those buffs again.)

NeedToKnow can't tell which buff corresponds to which weapon. There's also no good way to track the internal cooldown of the first weapon to proc. However, what you can do is turn on "sum stacks from all casters", and your berserker bar will distinguish when only one or both are active with a nice bar-in-bar display.

Are you actually sure this works? I can't get it to show if I have 1 or 2 berserk procs even if I do this. I have tried messing around with it a lot and I just can't figure out if it can actually track it. I have the newest version of NTK, just downloaded it from curse.
The 2 berserk's are "identical" spells/buff on me, but they are not "stacks" of buffs. Anyways - could there be some other setting I need to switch off or something similiar in order for NTK to show berserking's seperately/show if there are 1 or 2?

Yes, you need to enable "Buff Settings" -> "Sum stacks from all casters"

Thanks for a great mod.

Everything over on the PTR seems to be working fine, except it doesn't seem to be picking up on the new Elemental Shaman talent 'Lava Surge' which has a 20% chance to reset the cooldown of Lava Burst on each Flame Shock tick.

The cooldown bar is working fine normally, but won't jump to zero when Lava Surge procs.

Glad you like it This problem was reported over on Curse.com as well, but I haven't been able to get into the PTR/Beta yet. I suggest opening a ticket for it (link is in the addon description). That kind of cooldown tracking works in live, so hopefully it can be made to work in 4.x.

Only if Blizzard changes the way the UNIT_AURA event works. I feel is currently too expensive to do the kind of tracking you're talking about.

This was exactly what I had done in the first place. The only thing that happens is it will show the time left on the first berserk and then when it expires it shows the time left on the 2nd. It does not give me any kind of indication that I have 2 berserk's up.

My settings for the specific bar is:

Buff to time: Berserk
Bar type: Buff
Buff settings: Sum stacks from all casters
Time format: Fractional of seconds
Show: Aura name, stack count, Time remaining, spark

I have 2 grps of bars to track different buffs etc.

I cannot no matter how I try to juggle with it, get it to show if I have 1 or 2 berserk buff active on me.
You say I should be able to - which make me think that there must be something wrong here. I have tried with both spell ID and buff name btw.

and thank you for making the best debuff/buff tracking mod around

Huh! Sounds like a bug; it should be showing "Berserk (2)" (showing that you have two stacks of Berserk) when you have both stacks. Open a ticket if you like, I'll look into it (along with some other bugs) this evening.
