PhanxChat  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 8.0.0.1
by: Phanx, Akkorian

I am no longer developing or maintaining World of Warcraft addons. I haven't played in years, and don't have the time or interest to continue working on addons for a game I don't play anymore. If you are an addon author interested in continuing one of my addons, please see https://phanx.net/addons/. If you are an addon user, sorry, but there won't be any more fixes or updates from me.
Removes chat frame clutter and adds some functionality.

Features
  • Shortens chat channel names
  • Shortens cross-realm character names and Real ID player names
  • Replaces Real ID player names and BattleTags with WoW character names
  • Enables arrow keys without the Alt key (*)
  • Enables resizing chat frames by their edges
  • Makes all channels sticky (**)
  • Makes URLs clickable for easy copying
  • Moves the input box above the chat frame
  • Sets the delay time for chat text fading
  • Stops docked chat tabs from being dragged
  • Hides the scroll, menu, and social buttons
  • Hides extra textures on chat frames
  • Hides the flashing effect on chat tabs
  • Hides channel notification messages
  • Hides repeated messages in public channels
  • Enables class colored names in all channels with a single click
  • Changes the text size in all chat frames from a single control
(*) As of Patch 5.4 using Up/Down to access previously entered chat lines without the Alt key is limited to non-secure commands only. If you need to access previously entered secure commands (like /cast or /use) you will still need to hold the Alt key.

(**) If a channel is sticky, then after talking in that channel, the chat input box will open to the same chat type again, rather than making you type “/g” or “/ra” again.
Options & Commands
  • Type “/pchat” for options, or find them in the Interface Options.
  • Type “/clear” or “/clearchat” to clear all visible chat windows.
  • Type “/clear all” or “/clearchat all” to clear all chat windows.
  • Type “/tt" or “/wt” to send a whisper to your current target.
Some additional options, such as customizing which channels are made sticky and what abbreviations are used for channel names, are available by editing the Core.lua file in a plain-text editor such as Notepad. If you break something, download a fresh copy and try again.

Please DO NOT send me PMs asking for help, reporting bugs, or requesting features. To report a bug or suggest a feature, see the instructions below. To get help, post a comment. I read and respond to every ticket and comment!
Language Support
Works in all languages. Translated into English, Deutsch, Espańol, Français, Portuguęs, Русский, 한국어, 简体中文, and 繁體中文 (partial). Add or update translations for any locale on CurseForge!
Feedback
Post a ticket or comment. If you are reporting a bug, please include directions I can follow to reproduce the bug, whether it still happens when all other addons are disabled, and the exact text of the related error message (if any) from Bugger.

The following features will never be added to PhanxChat, and requests for them will be deleted, so please just don't bother posting such requests:

  • The "Replace real names" option will continue to replace both Real ID names and BattleTags with character names.

Version 3.3.5.94

Due to file changes, you should completely uninstall your existing copy of the addon before installing this version. Removing your old saved variables is recommended, but not required.
  • Added a Shorten Player Names feature, which shortens player names by removing realm names from cross-realm players and last names from Real ID players.
  • Removed the Auto Start Chat Log feature, because I never used it.
  • Removed the Color Player Names feature, because it was just too much code and performance overhead to color the very few types of messages that the default UI doesn't already color, and also confused all the people who never read patch notes or change logs.
  • Translations are needed for all locales.
  • All existing translations for the configuration UI have been discarded, since none of them had been updated since the transition from slash commands to a GUI over a year ago. If you can provide translations for any locale, please send me a PM.
  • Additionally, several chat channels are currently only shortened in English locales, because nobody has provided translations for them. If you see a channel name that isn't shortened, please post a bug report ticket with your locale (eg. "German" or "deDE"), the English name of the channel (eg. "General"), the localized name of the channel (eg. "Allgemein"), and an appropriate short form for your locale (eg. "A").

  • Fixed a bug relating to sticky channel selection

Version 3.3.5.72
  • Updated for patch 3.3.5. NOT BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE.
  • Added an “Enable resize edges” option to add resize controls along all edges of chat frames, and remove the bottom-left-corner resize arrow. This basically just restores pre-3.3.5 chat frame resizing functionality.
  • Added a “Hide extra textures” option to hide the extra textures on chat tabs and chat edit boxes added in patch 3.3.5.
  • Removed the “Enable mousewheel scrolling” option, since this functionality is now provided by the default UI.
  • Modified the default UI's mousewheel scrolling to scroll more lines at a time, page up/down on ctrl, and top/bottom on shift.
  • Fixed a bug preventing custom short channel name formats from using the channel name in addition to the channel number.
  • Translations are needed for the new options in all locales. Also, major revisions are needed for several locales. If you can assist with translations for any locale, please send me a PM.

Any chance of this getting updated? I prefer this chat mod above all others and right now its bugged out and showing numbers behind every line of chat. Like:

[Guild]Me:1: Blah Blah Blah
[Guild]You:2: Blah BLah blah
[Trade]Me:3: BLah blah blah

Nothing I can do will get it to fix, can someone please either update this mod, or hotfix it so it will stop with the numbers?

READ the replies and do as Siz suggested. That is your best bet. The mod works fine for me after doing that.

Fix for numbers next to names

Ok, I've patched this on my system. If you'd like to fix your own copy while waiting on the author to update this officially, read on. This fix enables the name coloring in chat. Siz' version just skips coloring the names.

Step 1) Open up PhanxChat.toc and change Interface from 20000 to 20100. This will make it no longer say it's out of date.

Step 2) Now open up PhanxChat.lua (if you have a different version of phanx than I do, you may need to open core.lua instead to find the lines I list below).

Step 2a) Go to line 38, which starts with
Code:
self:RegisterEvent("CHAT_MSG_SYSTEM"
Somewhere in the middle of that line, you should see
Code:
string.find(arg1, "^|Hplayer:%w+|h%[(%w+)%]|h:
Change that to
Code:
string.find(arg1, "^|Hplayer:%w+:%d+|h%[(%w+)%]|h:
(note that I added the ":%d+")

Step 2b) Go to line 100, which starts with
Code:
local n = string.gsub(
Find
Code:
|Hplayer:(.-)|h
in the middle of the line and change it to
Code:
|Hplayer:(.-):%d+|h
(again, I added the ":%d+")

Step 2c) Go to line 113, which starts with
Code:
msg = string.gsub(msg,
Find
Code:
 |Hplayer:(.-)|h
on that line and change it to
Code:
 |Hplayer:(.-):%d+|h
Step 3) Restart WoW or reload your UI.

Done!

If your line numbers don't match mine exactly, don't worry. Version differences may cause that and its no reason to worry or think the fix won't work - just find the line that matches

And finally.. this is a temporary fix. It throws away the "lineID" which is the number you are seeing, but that number is needed for some spam reporting. However, this shouldn't pose a problem since PhanxChat won't throw away the lineID unless it already knows the person, and spammers don't usually hang around...

Explanation for names that can't be clicked

Whenever you see someone who is being obnoxious/rude/trolling/spamming and yet you click on their name and don't see any menu pop up, it's because they didn't send the message.

Instead, the person on the line above them did. And then they padded their message with spaces to make it wrap to the next line and then type [FakeName]: @#^@ n00b! or something like that.

For example, I could make everyone think PhanxChat is a jerk by saying something like this in /1 (general)

Code:
> everyone having fun today? no stupid barrens chat? [PhanxChat]: stfu nub ur mom gav m3 a fr33bee l4st nite
Since it's not really from him, there's no playermenu when people click his name. A /who would only work if i was faking it from someone that is real and online. Also, if you've adjusted your font size or frame width, it easily breaks the illusion as you'll get the [PhanxChat] in the wrong place. It's a crappy trick, but it was popular way back in EQ 1.

Personally, I consider it harassment to spoof someone and should result in a warning or something.... but whatever. Now you know, try the name above the obnoxious message.

Yep, I tried to post it yesterday but I was short on time and WoWI was being really, really slow.

The number you were seeing is the line ID, and is used by the new spam reporting functions. Although the fix I've just uploaded will allow player name class coloring and bracket removal to work, if you have these features enabled, you will not be able to report spam through the new API. I'm working on a better fix, which should be ready to go by next maintenance, but in the meantime you'll have to either disable the name features or live without spam reporting.

And for some reason WoWI isn't sending me email notifications for new comments anymore... I'll try to remember to check for them more frequently.

Double string in Chat.

Hey, first off love this mod and have been using for quite a while. Just downloaded the newest version and am now getting multiple reportings of the generic WoW strings.

ex. [player] has come online. has come online.

[player] level 70 Human Warlock <Guild> - Netherstorm: Level 70 Human Warlock <Guild> - Netherstorm

Anyone else running into this issue?

Yep. I'm not going to fix it, because it's not game-breaking, and it won't be a problem in the rewritten version I'm working on. You'll just have to live with it until next week.

I'm having the same problem as Ultroman. In addition, something similar happens when I shift click on a players name for more info. It will display something like this:

[PlayerName] <Guild> [Zone]: <Guild> [Zone]

Okay, I've uploaded a preliminary fix for the visible chat line counter issue. Not sure why Blizz put the counter in there, but should be gone now. Please note that I didn't actually test in this version. I am working on a total rewrite with some new features, and just backported the counter fix from that version, which barring any further issues should be released this weekend.

Read my response to Vampira below, and Menelvalar's comment. If you turn off name coloring and name bracket removal, the numbers will go away. I have not had time to fix the problem in the last 24 hours or whatever since the patch came out. I will hopefully have time and have a fix by the end of the week.

While I enjoyed the fact that PhanxChat did exactly what I wanted, I've switched to using Prat. Prat may take slightly more time to configure, but it does everything PhanxChat does and more. Extra features can be disabled.

officer chat

I just cleared all my addons, plus all my wtf and cache folders. Put in just phanxchat. I still cant get the officer sticky to work. Any thoughts?

Oo, edit, the sticky feature works. My mistake, I was wondering about something else. Your mod use to separate guild and officer chat as well. I was capable of put officer chat in a separate window as the guild chat. I was wondering if this feature is still in? or it is not possible anymore?

Also customtimestamp hasnt been updated, do u have another recommendation?

New version up. This is a full rewrite, so it's using much less borrowed code now, and has a few new features. FuBar support is in, as is GUI configuration IF you have either of the Waterfall or Dewdrop libraries on your system. These libraries are NOT included in the PhanxChat download, due to size concerns. You may already have them if you use many other Ace2-based addons, or you can download standalone versions (just drop them in your addons folder like any other addon) from http://files.wowace.com/

eliminate1:
PhanxChat has never separated guild and officer chat. There was a request for such a feature some time ago, but it wasn't added. As for timestamps, I personally hate them, and have never used any addon to provide them. So, I can't recommend one for you. Just do a search for "timestamp" or look through the chat mod category.

Siz:
Was there any particular reason you abandoned PhanxChat?

Auctioneer issues with your mod

Phanx,
I posted this for you over on worldofwar.net, too - your mod (like !ChatBox) causes some weird errors with Auctioneer/Enchantrix when clicking on a link in trade channel (or guild/officer/group chat). if your mod is disabled, the errors go away when clicking on links.

Has something to do with the hooking into the Chat - tho I couldn't track it down to a specific line.
