Fishbringer  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 1.13-3
by: amnith [More]

Fishbringer is a lightweight addon for helping out when leveling fishing. It shows helpful information regarding how much skill is needed for the particular zones. It shows how much skill you have and how many fish you are going to need (at most) to get the next skill point.

This addon was initially written by me over a decade ago. I've tried to fix it up, make it more coherent, and also adding several quality of life changes.

Usage notes:

  • The addon supports both /fishbringer and /fb slash commands. (If Fishing Buddy is installed and loaded, /fb will not be available.)
  • Fishbringer will be automatically shown when you equip a fishing pole.
  • To move Fishbringer, hold down [Alt] and drag it to where you want it.

Commands:
  • /fishbringer show - Toggle Fishbringer's visbility.
  • /fishbringer align - Cycle through text alignments (default: right).*
  • /fishbringer count - Toggles visibility of fish count. Some people don't want to know how many fish they need, as the number will take away their joy of fishing.
  • /fishbringer reset - If I, you, or anyone else on the intertubes break the database, all addon settings and the catch counter can be reset with this command.

Please report any issues to me and I will try to fix them. If a zone is marked with 0 in skill and it is possible to fish there, please notify me.

1.13-3
- Moving Fishbringer will now persist through multiple sessions.

1.13-2
- A classic addon gets a Classic reformation.
- Rewrote many parts to mitigate the amount of facepalms from ancient code.

*10 years of tumbleweed*

3.0.2
- Added Shadowmoon Valley to zones. Fishing skill required: 280 (375 gives 100% catch rate)
- Added slash /fb if Fishing Buddy is not loaded, and resultingly an OptionalDeps to Fishing Buddy.
- Added slash /fbr.
- Minor fixes, nothing worth giving any more thought to. :)

3.0.1
- Added Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole to known fishing poles.
- Removed the slash /fb for compatibility with Fishing Buddy.

3.0
- Initial release for Wrath of the Lich King; First public release \o/
Optional Files (0)

If anyone else is curious, this seems to be under the open source BSD license.

I picked up this addon just before I put my nose to the grindstone and decided to level fishing and cooking. I've been very pleased with its minimalism and information density. It's quite elegant.

That said, there are two things I'd like to suggest, for your perusal:
  1. Make the frame "click-through" when it's locked. If you do that, I can actually move it to center screen and not worry about avoiding it.
  2. Add something like /fb goal # where you calculated the number of casts, per the cast level scale, you have left to make before fishing skill #. It may be depressing, but at least you'll be able to to see something like "600 casts to 350" and watch it count down.
Thanks again for this. I'm loving it .

EDIT: Well, I figured out how to do the clickthrough thing, but it in-elegant-izes the movement method you've set up now as without mouse interaction turned on, the enter/leave events don't fire meaning you have to have a lock toggle, as far as I can see.

Adding the goal thing would probably be fairly easy, but it would also disrupt the minimalism of the code. I might get to 450 before I care enough to make the change :|.

This should be fixed in the upcoming update. :-) Grizzly Hills requires 380 fishing, for the record.

Be that as it may, I've had the same. Leveling from 5 fishes, where Fishbringer said I needed 7 (~230 skill). I figured Fishbringer was off. However, after logging out and in again, I need 7 fishes. Seems like a Blizzard bug?

Edit: Actually, I need a varying amount of fish. Did they change that? It's 5 - 7, and not influenced by lure, at least, not that I can see.

Edit: I take it back, and I need to l2read. Missed the (at most) part.

286(+105)/375 fishing skill
9 fish needed at this level
This is not true, I only need 5 fish to level, I need 9 fish to level at level (286+105=) 391, but not at level 286!

Love your addon though ^^,

s, Fonjask
The formula for number of fish needed to skill is:
Code:
math.ceil((skill - 75)/25)
where skill > 75 or 1 otherwise.

For 286 we have:
Code:
math.ceil((286 - 75)/25) = math.ceil(211/25) = math.ceil(8.44) = 9
For 391 we have:
Code:
math.ceil((391 - 75)/25) = math.ceil(316/25) = math.ceil(12.64) = 13
Thus the addon is correct, as far as Blizzard has not made fishing easier to skill up.

GetAddOnInfo does not depend on an addon being loaded or even enabled. It isn't checking for any global object created by the addon; it's checking for the same information WoW checks for to display the addon list at the character screen.
Alright, thanks for the clarification! I'll remove the OptionalDeps the next patch, but I don't think that patch will be here before 2009 though.
