PhanxChat  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 8.0.0.1
by: Phanx, Akkorian

I am no longer developing or maintaining World of Warcraft addons. I haven't played in years, and don't have the time or interest to continue working on addons for a game I don't play anymore. If you are an addon author interested in continuing one of my addons, please see https://phanx.net/addons/. If you are an addon user, sorry, but there won't be any more fixes or updates from me.
Removes chat frame clutter and adds some functionality.

Features
  • Shortens chat channel names
  • Shortens cross-realm character names and Real ID player names
  • Replaces Real ID player names and BattleTags with WoW character names
  • Enables arrow keys without the Alt key (*)
  • Enables resizing chat frames by their edges
  • Makes all channels sticky (**)
  • Makes URLs clickable for easy copying
  • Moves the input box above the chat frame
  • Sets the delay time for chat text fading
  • Stops docked chat tabs from being dragged
  • Hides the scroll, menu, and social buttons
  • Hides extra textures on chat frames
  • Hides the flashing effect on chat tabs
  • Hides channel notification messages
  • Hides repeated messages in public channels
  • Enables class colored names in all channels with a single click
  • Changes the text size in all chat frames from a single control
(*) As of Patch 5.4 using Up/Down to access previously entered chat lines without the Alt key is limited to non-secure commands only. If you need to access previously entered secure commands (like /cast or /use) you will still need to hold the Alt key.

(**) If a channel is sticky, then after talking in that channel, the chat input box will open to the same chat type again, rather than making you type “/g” or “/ra” again.
Options & Commands
  • Type “/pchat” for options, or find them in the Interface Options.
  • Type “/clear” or “/clearchat” to clear all visible chat windows.
  • Type “/clear all” or “/clearchat all” to clear all chat windows.
  • Type “/tt" or “/wt” to send a whisper to your current target.
Some additional options, such as customizing which channels are made sticky and what abbreviations are used for channel names, are available by editing the Core.lua file in a plain-text editor such as Notepad. If you break something, download a fresh copy and try again.

Please DO NOT send me PMs asking for help, reporting bugs, or requesting features. To report a bug or suggest a feature, see the instructions below. To get help, post a comment. I read and respond to every ticket and comment!
Language Support
Works in all languages. Translated into English, Deutsch, Espańol, Français, Portuguęs, Русский, 한국어, 简体中文, and 繁體中文 (partial). Add or update translations for any locale on CurseForge!
Feedback
Post a ticket or comment. If you are reporting a bug, please include directions I can follow to reproduce the bug, whether it still happens when all other addons are disabled, and the exact text of the related error message (if any) from Bugger.

The following features will never be added to PhanxChat, and requests for them will be deleted, so please just don't bother posting such requests:

  • Battle.net name shortening and coloring will no longer occasionally not work right away after logging in
  • The /tt and /wt commands will now recognize the player as a valid whisper target

  • The "Replace real names" option will continue to replace both Real ID names and BattleTags with character names.

Version 3.3.5.94

Due to file changes, you should completely uninstall your existing copy of the addon before installing this version. Removing your old saved variables is recommended, but not required.
  • Added a Shorten Player Names feature, which shortens player names by removing realm names from cross-realm players and last names from Real ID players.
  • Removed the Auto Start Chat Log feature, because I never used it.
  • Removed the Color Player Names feature, because it was just too much code and performance overhead to color the very few types of messages that the default UI doesn't already color, and also confused all the people who never read patch notes or change logs.
  • Translations are needed for all locales.
  • All existing translations for the configuration UI have been discarded, since none of them had been updated since the transition from slash commands to a GUI over a year ago. If you can provide translations for any locale, please send me a PM.
  • Additionally, several chat channels are currently only shortened in English locales, because nobody has provided translations for them. If you see a channel name that isn't shortened, please post a bug report ticket with your locale (eg. "German" or "deDE"), the English name of the channel (eg. "General"), the localized name of the channel (eg. "Allgemein"), and an appropriate short form for your locale (eg. "A").

  • Fixed a bug relating to sticky channel selection

Version 3.3.5.72
  • Updated for patch 3.3.5. NOT BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE.
  • Added an “Enable resize edges” option to add resize controls along all edges of chat frames, and remove the bottom-left-corner resize arrow. This basically just restores pre-3.3.5 chat frame resizing functionality.
  • Added a “Hide extra textures” option to hide the extra textures on chat tabs and chat edit boxes added in patch 3.3.5.
  • Removed the “Enable mousewheel scrolling” option, since this functionality is now provided by the default UI.
  • Modified the default UI's mousewheel scrolling to scroll more lines at a time, page up/down on ctrl, and top/bottom on shift.
  • Fixed a bug preventing custom short channel name formats from using the channel name in addition to the channel number.
  • Translations are needed for the new options in all locales. Also, major revisions are needed for several locales. If you can assist with translations for any locale, please send me a PM.

Blizzard changed and renamed the button in 7.1. If you open up the file named in the error and change all instances of FriendsMicroButton with QuickJoinToastButton, everything should be back to normal.

Just looked, the "Hide extra textures" checkbox was already disabled.

I checked/enabled the option and did a test, and the first extra tab shows up correctly. Unfortunately the next extra tab (so 2 people sending direct messages) was unusable because it got cut off... Only the edge of the tab and first letter of the person's name was visible, then everything beyond the side of the chat log frame was invisible.

@DPattee: Does that still happen when you disable the "hide extra textures"option?

Chat tabs hard to read

When PhanxChat is enabled the table titles for whispers and other custom channels (like from AddOns that can put text in a custom chat channel) are hard to read and make other tabs hard to read too... Disabling PhanxChat resolves the problem.

These two screenshots show the issue (/only/ PhanxChat addon is enabled)

and how it should look (PhanxChat disabled)

@Spatti: Those are the resize controls. Docked chat tabs can't be resized, which is why you only see them on the first tab's frame. To hide them, right click your chat tab and click "Lock frame" in the menu.

My main chat frame has a thick black border, how does one change that and/or add it to seperate frames?

Languages only show up in /s no other public channels so it's really not a big deal to talk in them because you'll be presumably around people who are also rping, but it's better to deal with that functionality elsewhere rather than have that button on the side. @Genji I have an addon, most people who rp use it actually called TRP3 which has a built in to change racial languages, there's also an addon called tongues which lets you understand and speak other factional languages that your character "understands" you should check them out. You might be able to use a click to bind addon to hotkey it otherwise I'm not sure tho, cheers.

For languages, I don't think there is a command, but there's also not really any reason to ever send chat messages in, for example, Taurahe instead of Orcish. The only possible use I can think of is for RP, but for RP it seems like it would be better to "soft tag" the language (eg. write "[Taurahe]" in the message itself) instead of actually sending the message in that language, so the other players don't get a chat window full of gibberish, and also so that the other players aren't limited by the game's language mapping (eg. someone could be RPing as a troll who understands the tauren language, but there's no way to make messages actually sent in Taurahe intelligible if your character is a troll).

This is probably not actually caused by PhanxChat; Blizzard is notoriously terrible at blaming the right addon. If you can reliably reproduce the problem, please:
  1. Try to reproduce it with only PhanxChat enabled.
  2. If it doesn't happen with only PhanxChat enabled, try to identify which other addon(s) cause(s) it to happen, with or without PhanxChat.
Once you have narrowed things down, you can enable taint logging to get a detailed trace of what's being tainted along the way to the error occurring, and upload your log so I can take a look. Please don't do this with all of your addons enabled; since everything an addon touches or creates is automatically tainted, a taint log with a full set of addons can easily grow to many MB very quickly, and will contain tons of irrelevant messages that make it much more difficult to identify the actual cause of a problem.

Bugger - Chat box disappears until ui reload

1x [ADDON_ACTION_BLOCKED] AddOn 'PhanxChat' tried to call the protected function 'CompactRaidFrame4:ClearAllPoints()'.
!BugGrabber\BugGrabber.lua:573: in function <!BugGrabber\BugGrabber.lua:573>
[C]:: in function 'ClearAllPoints'
FrameXML\FlowContainer.lua:157: in function 'FlowContainer_DoLayout'
FrameXML\FlowContainer.lua:17: in function 'FlowContainer_ResumeUpdates'
...actRaidFrames\Blizzard_CompactRaidFrameContainer.lua:185: in function 'CompactRaidFrameContainer_LayoutFrames'
...actRaidFrames\Blizzard_CompactRaidFrameContainer.lua:130: in function 'CompactRaidFrameContainer_TryUpdate'
...actRaidFrames\Blizzard_CompactRaidFrameContainer.lua:57: in function 'CompactRaidFrameContainer_OnEvent'
[string "*:OnEvent"]:1: in function <[string "*:OnEvent"]:1

I'm not sure what triggers this but it causes my chat box to completely disappear until I reload UI.

Still seeing chat frame border with background set to full transparant

I've got a few chat tabs, and I've gone into them all and set the background slider all the way down to the bottom, so that the background is fully transparant.

I have checked and rechecked every single tab to make sure this is set correctly. When I'm on any other frame except the "General" (i.e. primary, left-most) tab, the border rectangle is completely invisible and the chat window completely hides itself. This is what I want.

But... If I am on the General tab, even though it's background has been turned off, I can still see the frame rectangle. It's very faint, but still noticable.

Also, this rectangle only shows up when the window is unlocked, which for me is all the time. I always have my chat frame unlocked so that I can adjust it at will based on the situation at hand.

Is there a way to make this rectangle go away for all tabs? All my tabs are set the same, but the main chat tab seems to have a slightly different behavior.

Open the Core.lua file in Notepad or another plain-text editor and edit the STRING_STYLE value near the top. You can edit a few other template values nearby as well. Pay close attention to the comments for each value.

Hey Phanx, thanks for another outstanding addon.

short question about the channel shortener:

how do i make it look from

Code:
s| Hello
to

Code:
s | Hello
For certain fonts this looks just way better imo.

@Ginji:
For emotes, just type them. Typing "/wave" is faster than clicking a button and finding "/wave" in the menu and clicking on it anyway. Plus, the emote menu doesn't even show all of the available emotes, or at least it didn't the last time I looked at it some time back in the Burning Crusade.
