Civility!

Version: 1.0
by: VagrantEsha [More]

Civility, help clean up your realm!

This keeps things civil, then?

Sort of.

I created this primarily as a companion to mods like BadBoy, so that we can get all of those damned gold-spammers! Basically, it builds a list of the last 20 things you saw across everything in your General log and it provides a GUI to report on a line-by-line basis.

It can also be used to deal with truly vulgar and offensive people. If you're on an RP server, the last thing you want is people making all kinds of nasty slurs in the General channel. Civility can help you with that too by allowing you to easily pass along the information to whomever deals with these complaints.

If you've ever thought someone is annoying enough to deserve the ban-hammer, pass along the offender to Blizz and see if they agree! But please, don't report small personal attacks or frivolity, save the use of Civility for gold-spammers or people who're making serious slurs; such as racial slurs, really offensive anti-lifestyle slurs, and so on.

I've seen people like that, how do I start cleaning up my realm?

First you'll need to know how to call up the UI.

The quickest way (and the recommeded method) is to type /civil into your editbox, the slow way would be to hit escape to get to the main menu, go into Interface, then Addons, and then select Civility from the panel on the left.

The Civility GUI is really simple, there's a dropdown box containing the last 20 lines you saw, and a Register Complaint button. Simply select the offending item and hit that button!

1.0: I feel this mod has reached a milestone, in that it's achieved a level of stability to the point where (despite my efforts to break it) I haven't seen any bugs in quite some time. This milestone also implies that I'm unable to think of any relevant features to add at this time without bloating out this mod, and there's nothing left to do that wouldn't be superfluous. Thus, this mod will likely be left untouched until a new feature is desired, or until a new Warcraft patch breaks it (if that happens). As of now, this mod should be considered stable.

revision310508b: I forgot to scan Battleground chat in the past releases, I've now got that rectified in this release. (Note: This is newer than the one I accidentally uploaded on the Peek page, I got the order of zip > upload to correct place completely messed up.)

revision310508: There was a dual-line bug for channels, I hadn't noticed that until today, where I needed to report something someone had said in channel chat. <.< I also got rid of the 'blah blah reported!' text because Blizz prints their own text for that, and localised text too, so it's not necessary.

revision280508: Initial release.

Re: Voting low without commenting?

Nope. I feel the same way. Spam Sucks and wastes my time. I am trying this out. Mean People Suck and I'll be glad to report

I wish that if someone did that, they'd comment. If it's due to a bug, I can fix it. If it's due to them actually being a Judas, then the least they could do is have the good taste to tell me that they're being a Judas. But I'm more inclined to think in the case of Civility that someone is pissed at me for making it easy to report their ill-thought out actions.

Really though, if someone is being an ass in game, they deserve to get reported. Whether my Addon existed or not, they'd still get reported. My Addon makes it easier for people to report others who're being asses, sure... but that's a good thing. A very good thing.

Thank you.

I actually deleted the first comment a little earlier, before I knew there was a reply even as I'd had the tab hanging around for a bit in Fx. I was in a bit of a bad mood at the time and felt ill at ease about the comment later.

I do think though that in-game spammers and generally obnoxioiusly obtuse and offensive people (three O's that should never exist together in one sentence) should be dealt with. Every gamer out there is affected by such things, some people can be hurt by some of the stuff that goes on, and others can simply be made angry by all the pointless spam.

That's why I felt that Civility had to exist, to see if we could get the GMs on each of our respective servers to start doing something about the trash lying around. They're paying customers, I understand that, but if they'll ban for exploiting then they should ban people who're disruptive too. If Civility helps players achieve that goal, then I'm all the happier.

Anyway, back to why I was annoyed. I had rhyme and reason for creating Civility, it wasn't just a pet project, so I want to hear what people say. Of course, cowardly sniping votes don't tell me anything, nor do they tell me how I can improve my mod... and feedback is something I relish because I do want to make Civility a better mod for all the players out there.

To all those who use Civility: I hope it helps get rid of the spammy and the offensive buggers off your server, too!
