Malsumis® Font Changer  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 0.9b
by: Chobaka [More]

Malsumis® WoW Font Changer v0.9b

Note: it still works (patch 6.0.3), if I am not too lazy I might update both the Windows and the Java version, using newer technologies as JavaFX and .net 4 visual sweets.

1. What is it ?

A simple program to change the default WoW Fonts(that include the main UI font, the damage font, the mail and quest log fonts, Player, NPCs, Guild names font, etc).

If people show interest in it I will continue improving and developing it.

Please comment and give feedback.

Thank you.

2. How to use it ?

If you don't want to install Java, simply extract the windows version and run Malsumis® WoW Font Changer.exe(works with Windows XP/Vista/7-tested).
Then follow the instructions shown on the screen.

If you are not using Windows OS, or you just like the Java version more and have Java installed on your PC simply extract the Cross-platform Java version and start Malsumis Font Changer.jar(works with Windows XP/Vista/7-tested, Mac(to run this on a Mac, open /Applications/Utilities/Java Preferences, and drag Java SE 6 to the top of the bottom list) and Linux-not tested). Then you should get a warning that its trying to access your file system, you should allow that.
Then follow the instructions shown on the screen.

3. Who made it and where can I get new versions from?

Atm it is only hosted on WoWInterface.com, Curse.com. I don't take any responsibility for files with the same name downloaded by a different locations!
Scoty <The Devastating Throng> @ EU-Neptulon.

*Note that the program can't access fonts in the ...\WINDOWS\Fonts folder! If you want to use a font from there, simply copy it somewhere else.

Perhaps you can expound to me the reason why I would want to download an .exe- a file that could potentially be malicious- as opposed to using one of the many addons that can change fonts in the game to do this job.

By the way, I'm not suggesting this file is, in fact, malicious. It just seems to me there are plenty potentially less risky approaches to changing in game fonts.

Why should I choose this one?

Simply because, I am not so sure that there is an addon who can change this font(also the Player, NPC, Guild names. etc.):

Don't forget that the fonts are not limited to some lib, chosen by the author of the addon, it is virtually every font in .ttf format which the user can chose.

Do you really think that file containing malicious code can be shared via WoWInterface or Curse? Before this file went live, it had been reviewed for more than 10 hours or so, by the WoWInterface moderators.

That GUI looks much better tbh.
Nice idea but I think it would be easier to simply choose a font for each section i.e.
Damage Font:
Browse:

Quest Text:
Browse:

Huge Numbers Text:
Browse:

Normal Numbers Text:
Browse:

Then a set fonts button.

You could even add
Master Font (Changes all ingame fonts to this font)
Browse:

It would save the - tick box, select font, click button, repeat for the other three fonts.
This is only a thought though. Your idea is awesome. Should save me forgetting which font does which next time I make my UI

An addon cannot do this from in-game, but you can easily do it without an addon by dropping font files into World of Warcraft\Fonts and naming them appropriately; this is the infamous "Step 2" that ClearFont has been telling users to do for years.

As it's been pointed out, it can be done, partly by addons and in other ways with user-driven approaches.

No offense intended to WoWInterface certainly, but I don't depend on websites for the safety and integrity of my machine. I depend on me.

To wit, I refuse to download or install automatic updating clients (including WoWI's) for similar reasons- and I have over 200 addons to update by hand. Frankly such clients don't have a particularly good track record as far as safety and security go.

One memorable case involved the IncGamers client- which they stored on their client server as an EXE. The server was hacked and some sort of virus was placed on it that was infecting any copies of the program handed out by the server. The sitemaster spent a good deal of time arguing with people who were pretty certain the IncGamers client was the source of the infection, insisting it was absolutely under no circumstances possible.

He was wrong, of course.

It's something that many sites are trying harder to fix, and perhaps doing better, but there's a reason that account theft rings and other hacking operations target third-party sites, and put simply it's because they don't have the budget to close a lot of the potential loopholes.

So, while I don't doubt that WoWI has the best of intentions regarding their diligence in keeping infected material off their site, it's hardly any excuse for me to drop my guard.

There is no addon which can modify files in folders other than "...\wtf" and "...\addons" folders. So no addon can do exactly, what my little program can.

Its true that you can do, what this program do, by yourself. However it is intended to speed up and simplify the process(Imagine you have twenty fonts, that you like. You want to try every single one to see how it looks in WoW. How much time will take to manually rename and copy every single one, four times?).

And I don't wanna defend my program or anything like that, if you DON'T like it, DON'T use it. Simple as!

Furthermore, no offense SkunkWerks, but do you think that after you made a skin for some other guy's addon, and you got your "Addon Author" button, you can come and /spit on other's work? If you are so "concerned" about this file, download it and scan it, send it to be tested by some antivirus labs, and come back here with facts. But without any facts, coming here and spreading rumors... its just not cool thing to do.

Fair enough. It answers the question I asked, in any case.

Intended or not, I take offense at assumptions, rumors, and twisting of the truth, particularly when it's easy to see I've done none of the things you accuse me of, and the person you paint me as here is at best, wildly inaccurate. The site gave me an "addon author" button. I didn't ask for it, nor have I ever claimed to be an authority on the subject of addons as a result of it. The title means I uploaded a file here, just as you did, nothing more than that.

In fact, the case is rather the opposite. I am no hand at coding, and have rather frequently admitted such, so you can drop contrived notions of assumed arrogance. My actual area of expertise is in graphic arts, as well as a good deal of experience with computer systems, building them, setting them up and maintaining them. I'm well versed in many aspects of securing them as well if my concerns here aren't hint enough.

As for what I have said here, I have at no time claimed that this addon was malicious. In fact, I have several times offered the disclaimer that I was not saying this at all (if you've actually read what I said rather than inferred your own meaning into it).

What I have said is that .EXE files carry a significant risk, regardless of how much the site storing them is diligent about security, and regardless of the intentions of the author of the file. This is perhaps particularly poignant given the fact that there are many addons that don't involve .EXE files that change fonts in game out there.

And all of this is absolutely true and factually backed-up, whatever you may think of that.

I asked a simple question based on what I know, and you've answered it. Shall we leave it at that, or would you like to cast more ill-informed aspersions on my character and motives?

My apologies than I am totally wrong. May be, my not so solid knowledge in English has "guided" me to some wrong conclusions. Sorry again, lets leave it that way I have no intention to make this comments a "battle of the words" area, its not the thing that they are made for.

I offer my apologies in turn if there was a misunderstanding. It wasn't intentional on my part either, I assure you.

Most Addon packages typically contain only LUA code, as I'm sure you're well aware, when I see EXEs, rather than blindly downloading them and unpacking them, I like to have an idea why they're there.

You've said this automates the process that's usually manual in other font-altering offerings, and that makes sense to me. Thanks for answering my question.

Its from SCT addon, called Emblem. I noticed its one of the fonts, which is really easy to read, it is still smooth(no pixels) when its large, and I like the view of it ;P

Am I correct in assuming that this little program just takes care of the renaming and such of the fonts in the fonts folder(much like many compilations have a fonts folder) and it doesn't actually modify anything?

It looks like a dream come true but I want to make sure I'm not going to get in trouble, you know?

Any chance you might remake the exe in java or release the source so someone can do it for you? As an exe it's not cross-platform and some of us mac users would like the font options
