MikScrollingBattleText (MoP Beta)  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 5.7.4 Beta
by: Mikord [More]

Announcements:

  • This version will NOT work on live. It is only for the Mists of Pandaria Beta.
  • There is a known issue with triggers that involve party and raid members due to a workaround I've addd for a Blizzard API bug with UnitGUID. I have reported the issue on the Official Beta bug forum.

Description:

MSBT is designed to be an extremely lightweight, efficient, and highly configurable mod that makes it easier to see combat information by scrolling the information on the screen in separate, dynamically creatable scroll areas. It is a replacement for Blizzard's Floating Combat Text and Damage output.

Features:
  • Lightweight and efficient design.
  • Scroll incoming damage/heals, outgoing damage/heals, and notifications in separate configurable scroll areas on the playing field.
  • Display cooldown completion alerts.
  • Display loot alerts with a total of how many are now in inventory.
  • Add triggers that will allow you to show notifications based on a variety of conditions.
  • Assign a sound file to play for events/triggers.
  • Dynamically create new scroll areas and assign any event/trigger to them.
  • Customize the position, size, animation style, enabled state, font style, font size, font outline, and opacity for each of the scroll areas.
  • Customize each individual event's color, font style, font size, font outline, opacity, output message, enabled state, and scroll area.
  • Set "Master Font" settings that will be inherited by all of the scroll areas and the events in them unless they are overridden at the scroll area or event level.
  • Merge AoE data into one event with cumulative damage/healing done with number of normal and crits specified.
  • Show overhealing amounts against yourself or party/raid members.
  • Color unit names according to their class (including CUSTOM_CLASS_COLORS support).
  • Color damage amounts according to damage type.
  • Show partial effects (resists, absorbs, vulnerabilities, etc) colored according to type.
  • Filter output information with a full suite of spam controls.
  • Load on demand options.
  • For mod developers:
    • Output your own scrolling messages with the MikSBT.DisplayMessage function instead of having to create your own frame and animation code. You can also use your own font by first registering it with MSBT via the MikSBT.RegisterFont function.
    • Create custom animation styles.
    • See the included API.html file for reference information.

Is there anyway to make this just show whirlwind and cleave. In the past I modified the code to only show these two. I use it as a tool to make sure i'm hitting all my targets with cleave/ww.

Barjack,

Ah, I understand you now. You were talking about just blindly adding it to the top of all files whether or not they actually use it.

I'm about to release a new version which has all of these cases handled and I did notice it resolved the taint issues as expected.

Sorry, I didn't mean to suggest that using _ is lazy but that my fix of just copy+pasting the line "local _" to the top of all the .lua files was the lazy way I fixed the taint issue as an interim measure. The less lazy way in this case being going through the individual uses of _ and checking to see whether it's a local or not in each case (probably the majority of them are local currently anyway). Personally, I use _ all the time, and select() as infrequently as possible.

Thanks for the heads up. That is probably the case since I've used _ for return values I'm not using throughout the entire addon as per the standard way to ignore return values in lua.

I'll go through and make sure all instances are handled.

I personally don't think adding a local declaration for _ is a lazy fix as there are many times when you don't need the return values and it's more efficient to use _ (particularly a local variable as you suggest) as opposed to adding the function call overhead of select() to pull them out. I'd also prefer to continue using _ for ignored return values since it is widely recognized.

I believe many MSBT files are tainting _ as a global variable. I'm not sure if this ever actually caused taint in 4.x or prior, but for whatever reason some Blizzard addons are now sometimes attempting to access _ in 5.0 which can cause taint if it was written to as a global via an addon.

Examples are in MSBTParser.lua line 690, 697, 736, etc.; also MSBTTriggers.lua line 552, 766, 841; MSBTCooldowns.lua line 447. There may very well be more, also.

It's possible that Blizzard code will rarely do this and may even be fixed in future to always correctly shadow _, but since we can't rely on it I think it's a good idea to make sure addons themselves do. As a lazy fix I've sometimes added a simple "local _" to the top of these files temporarily, but of course I leave how you want to deal with it up to you.

Anyway, thanks for the great addon.

Potential Brewmaster Tweaks

For Brewmaster Monks, I'm considering the following changes:
  • Handle Chi power like Combo Points and Holy Power (showing the number of Chi you have rather than +X Chi on gains) (Edit: Implemented in 5.7.2)
  • Suppress all Elusive Brew gains (it's super spammy) and instead create triggers for Elusive Brew x5, x10, and x15 (Edit: Implemented in 5.7.3)
  • Suppress all Power Guard gains and add trigger for Power Guard x3 (Edit: Implemented in 5.7.3)

I've tried these out and it cleans up the spam for me quite a bit. Thoughts or concerns?
