NeedToKnow: Simple, effective timer bars

Track specific buffs, debuffs, and cooldowns with bars that always appear in the same place in the same color. NeedToKnow is great for short buffs and debuffs you use a lot. For example, a rogue could show bars for Slice and Dice, Rupture, and Garrote.

  • Easy to set up
  • Works with spells, abilities, items, totems, procs, and internal cooldowns
  • Track more than one spell or ability with one bar
  • Works with Retail and Classic WoW

Other features
  • Save setups for different specializations
  • Track by name or spell ID
  • Show cast time indicator to see when to refresh buffs and debuffs before they finish
  • Make bars deplete at same rate to see which will finish first
  • Blink bars when buff or debuff missing
  • Track buffs on raid members without having to focus them

Instructions

General options are available in the Blizzard interface options menu. You can type "/needtoknow" or "/ntk" to lock/unlock the addon. To configure individual bars, right click them while unlocked. Bars work while locked. If you only see full bars that aren't changing in response to anything, they are unlocked! Just type /ntk to lock them and get them working for you.

You can enable more groups of bars by going into the Interface settings off the main menu and choosing the AddOns tab.

When entering your settings, be careful with your spelling and capitalization. Also remember that buffs and debuffs sometimes have different names than the items and abilities that apply them. The Death Knight ability Icy Touch, for example, applies a DoT called Frost Fever.

On each bar you can enter in multiple buffs/debuffs deliminated by commas. They are prioritized according to order.
i.e. "Rake, Lacerate" - If both are applied, will display Rake until it expires and then it will track Lacerate
i.e "Curse of Recklessness, Curse of Exhaustion, Curse of Shadows" - Good way to track single instance curses

If you wish to use SpellID, make sure you are using the correct one!

FAQ

Why won't NeedToKnow work for me? I set it up but the bars just sit there at full, not moving or tracking anything.
The bars only time things when the addon is locked. Type "/needtoknow" or "/ntk" to lock/unlock the addon. You can also use the buttons in the AddOns tab of the Blizzard Interface Options menu.
Why won't NeedToKnow track this buff/debuff? It works for other things.
Check your spelling and capitalization. Also remember that buffs and debuffs sometimes have different names than the items and abilities that apply them. The Death Knight ability Icy Touch, for example, applies a DoT called Frost Fever. If you're using a SpellID, make sure you have the correct one.
How do I track multiple buffs or debuffs on a single bar?
Enter the name of each buff/debuff separated by commas. They are prioritized according to order. For example, "Rake, Lacerate" will display Rake until it expires and then it will track Lacerate. "Curse of Recklessness, Curse of Exhaustion, Curse of Shadows" is a good way to track single-instance curses.
How do I get more bars?
You can enable more groups of bars by going into the Interface settings off the main menu and choosing the AddOns tab. If four groups of six bars isn't enough for you, consider another timer bar addon. Also consider rethinking your UI.
How do I get NeedToKnow to track my own DoTs but not those applied by other members of my class?
Select "Only show if cast by self" in the bar's configuration menu.

NeedToKnow vs NeedToKnow - Updated?

What is the difference between "NeedToKnow" and "NeedToKnow - Updated"? They have the same author, version number and updated date. The descriptions are a different layout, but seem to say the same thing.

There's a ticket about this feature request over at CurseForge, if you want to leave comments on how you think it should look/act. That said, it's a little out of NTK's current scope to track the GCD specifically, so I'm not sure when/if this feature would go in.

Personally, I just mash buttons until the ability fires. It's a bad habit I picked up from levelling my rogue with a "/castrandom Sinister Strike, Riposte" macro (back when macros like that worked).

Track GCD?

I love NTK and use it for all my characters! However, one thing I can't see is the ability to track Global Cooldown. On my hunter and my spellcaster characters this isn't really an issue, but on my DK it'd be nice to be able to replace the rather ghetto way I do it now (a single-button Bartender bar with a stamina scroll on it).

Is this possible, or can you suggest a better way to do it (that doesn't involve Quartz )

Permanent Icons

First off - thanks very much for this excellent addon to both of you. Having used Necrosis (on my Lock main), Fortexorcist, Quartz, and can't even remember how many other similar addons - NTK is far and away the most useful and powerful.

My only request would be to have the option to have icons remain visibile all the time. After using NTK quite a bit, it's easier to know what debuffs are missing, but having the icon remain after the bar disappears would make this much more useful in my opinion, especially if there are a large number of bars.

That's what TellMeWhen is, basically. They've diverged a bit now, though, and don't have all the same features.

Is it possible to make an internal cooldown type bar appear AFTER the relevant proc has faded?

I'm displaying my procs through another addon, but I want to overlay it with NTK bars when the procs are on cooldown (but not when they are up, which is exactly what happens now since the bar appears on buff gain).

This would also be a ghetto way to achieve what you have in ticket 39 on curseforge

This is a problem with the way DK cooldowns are implemented in WoW. As far back as WotLK beta I and others requested that DK abilities only show internal cooldowns, not rune cooldowns. It never went anywhere, so maybe it's a technical issue with the WoW client. Hopefully Blizz will change the behavior when they change the way runes work in Cataclysm.

Sorry, dude. I hate it, too.

two berserk

Hi, can you add support for procs two berserk from both hands?
- Two bars for each berserk procs.
- One bar, when two berserk procs from both hands at once.

Currently you get 4 bar groups to play with. The groups can be placed anywhere, so you could have one group with the buffs in it and another group next to it with the ICDs in it.

Hi,

Maybe I can't see the option, but can you tell me how/if I can separate the bars into different columns? In the past I used two different addons to monitor my buffs and ICD's. I like to keep them separated into two different spots on my screen because it's easier for me to monitor.

As of right now, the buffs and ICD's are stacked on top of each other in one column distinguished by color. I'd really like know how to configure it to separate the columns, if possible.

Thanks!

Great addon Kitjan, making good use of the new CD timers.

One problem I'm having though on my DK. I'd like to setup a CD timer for Death and Decay and Howling Blast. The tricky part for DK's is not only does Blizzard's UI factor in the base CD of the spell but also the time it takes for the required runes to become active, resulting in the timer bar spiking the time remaining as it tries to make it's way down.
