Pawn  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 2.8.11
by: VgerAN [More]

Find upgrades, do more damage, win.

Pawn helps you find upgrades for your gear and tell which of two items is better for your spec. Start with built-in advice from Ask Mr. Robot, or customize Pawn's stat weights to have it suggest items based on your favorite class guide or simulator. Pawn can help you decide whether it's better to use the cloak with 500 mastery or the one with 450 crit—whether you're just starting out, or you're an advanced player who plans out gear upgrades and regularly simulates and evaluates performance.

Getting started

If you're new to Pawn, don't worry—Pawn will automatically set itself up to give you advice based on math done by the experts at Ask Mr. Robot (or, on Classic, HawsJon). Just watch for Pawn's green arrows. If you decide you want to go further, there are a lot of ways that you can customize Pawn, by tracking multiple specs at once, importing custom stat weights, and more.

Language support

Pawn now works with all languages on both live/retail and Classic. It's possible that you might run into stats that Pawn doesn't recognize from time to time when playing on non-English clients—if you think that Pawn's not calculating something right, put an item into the Compare tab and see if it lists all of the stats there. If something's missing, let me know which item and which language, and I should be able to get it fixed!

Staying in touch

Become a fan of Vger on Facebook and get updates of new versions and stuff like that. You can also leave questions or comments there if you don't have an account on this site. (I typically respond to questions much more quickly on Facebook or Curse.)

Found a bug?

If you think you might have found a bug, just leave a comment here. In addition to a description of the problem, please make sure to include: (1) the language that you use Pawn and WoW in, (2) whether it's live/retail or Classic, (3) the specific items that don't work as expected, and (4) your class and spec if you're using the built-in (not custom) stat weights. Screenshots are usually very helpful as well.

Incompatible with...

Pawn will not work with Titan Panel Artifact Power or Combat Numbers Separator. Those addons change item tooltips and will cause Pawn to give bad advice. It's also been reported that using Pawn with TradeSkillMaster can cause the game to crash or hang.

Version 2.8.11

Classic Season of Discovery: Added support for those new hit and crit stats, again. Because Blizzard broke them in a patch.

Version 2.8.10

Classic Season of Discovery: Added support for the new Gnomeregan items with hit or crit to all attacks. Items with the new hit stat will receive points for your Hit and Hit (Spell) stats, and items with the new crit stat will receive points for your Crit and Crit (Spell) stats.

Version 2.8.9

Dragonflight: Updated stat weights for all classes and specs.
Dragonflight: Updated Pawn's scale color button to work with the new patch 10.2.5 color picker.

Version 2.8.8

Dragonflight: Removed the "Only show upgrades for my best armor type after level 27" option. After level 27, Pawn will now always stop showing items that are not the right type of armor for your class.
Classic: Fixed a bug where Pawn would suggest armor your character can't wear as upgrades.
Classic: Fixed a bug where Pawn would sometimes suggest socketing Glinting Flame Spessarite when it meant to suggest Sovereign Shadow Draenite. This bug potentially affected any time Glinting Flame Spessarite was suggested (such as in the socketing advisor popup), but didn't affect any other calculations or upgrade suggestions.

Version 2.8.7

Classic: Added support for the Classic trade skill and crafting window: hovering over the item icon in that window should now work the same as if the item were already in your bags.

Version 2.8.6

Dragonflight: More new stat weight updates, updated for patch 10.2.0.

Version 2.8.5

Dragonflight: New stat weights have been included for all classes and specs, including all evoker specs, based on the latest Ask Mr. Robot raid simulation data.

Version 2.8.4

To keep things responsive, especially on the slower Classic versions of the game, Pawn has a new system that caps how much processing power it will allow bag addons to use when calculating which items get green upgrade arrows. Roughly speaking, if the game runs at 60 FPS for you, Pawn will block bag addons from reducing that by more than 2 FPS. (This change doesn't affect you if you aren't using a custom bag addon.)

Version 2.8.3

Wrath Classic: The new gems for Content Phase 3 (Cardinal Ruby, etc.) will now show up in recommendations, and will be taken into account when determining the value of sockets on high-level gear.

Version 2.8.2

Dragonflight: Dragonflight 10.1.0 has a game bug that was causing Pawn to show the wrong information on "currently equipped" tooltips. That bug is fixed in Dragonflight 10.1.5. Pawn will stop annotating "currently equipped" tooltips until 10.1.5 launches.
Dragonflight: Added support for the 10.1.5 PTR.
Dragonflight: Added support for Augmentation Evokers. If you're using Pawn in Automatic mode (the default), you don't need to do anything extra. If you're using Pawn in Manual mode, you'll need to import your own Augmentation scale or use (shift-click) the one that comes with Pawn. (Stat weights for Augmentation aren't available yet so it's a placeholder in this version of Pawn.)

Version 2.8.1

Dragonflight: Fixed a problem that could occur when showing Pawn's version number on 10.1.0.

Version 2.8.0

Updated for Dragonflight: Embers of Neltharion (10.1.0).

I was wondering can this addon tell you about caps I have a warrior tank and want to know how a new item will effect my caps and/or how much closer it will bring me to the cap. i.e. the defense cap for warriors is 540 well I was hoping I can find something that could give me a reading something like this:
Defense Before 434/540
After 470/540
or something similar so I know if I equip that item it will increase my defense bringing me closer to the cap or could be the other way and take me farther away or even make my defense well over the cap.
This could also be done for other classes like hunters and there hit cap etc.....
If this can't or you don't want it to is there a addon you can direct me to?

Indeed I do! The final version of 1.1.6 (which is basically identical to the beta from Curse) should show up here momentarily as soon as it's approved.

I use wowMatrix to update my addons for me and it's looking here for the current version. Do you plan on updating the version here with the beta that you have posted on Curse? Thanks.

Re: feature request.

Hi! I do plan on adding something, probably in the next major Pawn update, to give you quick at-a-glance info on whether or not a new item would be an upgrade. I'll probably do it based on the best item (for each scale) that you've ever equipped in that slot, rather than simply the one currently equipped. But, I'm not completely sure yet.

The number in parentheses is indeed the unenchanted value for the same item. You can turn those off (or the enchanted values, if you only want the unenchanted values) from the Options tab. In the upper-right corner, look for "Calculate unenchanted values" and "Calculate enchanted values."

One feature that would rock, would be for Pawn to display, on a an item tooltip - the delta between the weighting of the item and the currently equipped item in the same slot.

Also, what is the number in brackets? It seems to be the unenchanted calculation for the same item, but there doesnt seem to be a way to inhibit or control whether the enchanted, unenchanted or both weightings are calculated and displayed.

I'm not aware of any bugs regarding armor penetration rating. It doesn't show up with the word "rating" in the UI, I guess, but that's what it's tracking. Is there an item that you know of that Pawn doesn't understand properly?

The Compare tab always compares items without their gems and enchantments.

Also, I am confused as to the range of points for scales. Is there a standard range to be used, or is it whatever you want the numbers to be? I can't find any reference to this question in any of the documentation.

You can make the numbers to be whatever you want. To make things easier to understand, it's greatly helpful if you set a baseline and then work from there. For me, I use a baseline of 1 normal stat or combat rating = 1 point on my scale. That's the way that the default starter scale is set up too. A lot of melee DPS scales will use a baseline of 1 attack power = 1 point, because that's a really common way of valuing melee DPS items already.

Knowing the math that's involved can be helpful in deciding which stats are most important to you, but if you already know which stats you want from items, you can probably use Pawn successfully without getting too heavy into the math. Just increase the values of those stats. If you don't want to get into the hardcore math and just want to know which items are better, you should consider using someone else's scales, which you can import directly into your copy of Pawn. You can find other scales (and stat values that you can enter manually) on the Elitist Jerks forums, or someone else has also created a forum for exchanging and discussing Pawn scales here:

I don't really understand all of the formulae and relations among the different stats and bonuses. Is it necessary to know more about such things to make good use of something like Pawn?

I suppose that's a possibility for a future version. Back when Pawn didn't have a UI and was all slash commands I think I even had a feature where you could type a number and get an item window for that item; maybe I should have kept that. You can always use a mod like AtlasLoot to browse through loot tables (it has a search feature, too), or use Wowhead or WoWDB to generate links that you can paste into chat. In addition, in case you didn't know:

1) You can right-click an item tooltip to put that item into the Compare window.

2) You can press the "]" key while hovering over an item to put it into the Compare window (or "[" to put it on the left side). If these keybindings don't work, it's possible that something else was using those keys and Pawn couldn't set them automatically; you can set them manually in the normal Key Bindings window.

Hi, I just started using this addon and I'm still understanding some of it greatness. I was wondering if you might add an option where I can type in the item number of an item in the compare feature rather then just dragging it from my bag and what not.

I've found that I just cache alot of equipment from my inspect option and when I'm looking to upgrade I go through it then. This way I can actually compare two different Shaman I have cached and see which item I really want to go after.

Good points. You're right, user-defined functions would probably not be worth the time to implement.

As for the trinkets: Sure, some effects are really complex and would be hard to convert. But then again, I don't think you should be concerned about users equipping on-kill trinkets in a boss fight, just because Pawn tells them to. Actually because they made Pawn tell them to!
I mean the same goes for evaluating +hit if you're around the cap. Once you've reached the cap, more +hit is useless, whether Pawn knows that or not.

On second thought, providing a unit to convert to just adds flexibility. Easy mode: Just assign a number.
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=37264 "Your harmful spells have a chance to strike your enemy, dealing 1168 to 1752 shadow damage." That's an example where I wouldn't want to provide a unit. If I convert it to DPS, that means I'd need to assign a value to DPS. But I don't want to do that as a caster, because it would change the value of my main hand weapon. So that's an example where I would like the unit to be optional.

Thanks for the suggestions. I fear that allowing people to supply a function is something that only a very few super-super-hardcore math lovers would take advantage of, and it would take away too much time that I could be using to add features that the general public would get more use out of. It seems that a majority of people who use Pawn don't even want the complexity of defining their own numeric stat values.

I use some functions and spreadsheets to calculate my stat values as well, but I feel that it works well enough to just periodically update my scales as my gear improves or focus changes, and that hasn't been too burdensome so far. I'm not too concerned if my value of spell power is 1.488 when it really should have been 1.502 given the new gem I put in my pants yesterday.

Allowing people to define values for things on tooltips that Pawn doesn't understand is something I'd like to look into more in the future. I'll most likely do it roughly the way you propose, where the user can define equivalent stat values for something, but I'm not sure that would even be enough. For example, Arcane Revitalizer restores 200 mana per kill, with a 10-second cooldown. In battlegrounds or soloing, this is kind of like having 25-50 mp5, but in a boss fight, that ability is not terribly useful. If you want to model that in Pawn, you'd then need to define what that ability means in terms of other stats for each of your scales, which is way more work than most people are going to go to.

Trinkets are just complicated like that. I want to make sure that if and when I do add features to cover trinkets better, I'm making decisions that are flexible enough to accommodate peoples' needs, but not so complex that nobody wants to use the feature. So... I'm still mulling things over.

The only available rating formula is linear in the stats. When rating gear for DDs, I'd argue that DPS is non-linear for every single class in the game. For a caster it might look like this
DPS = c0*(c1+[spell power])*(1+c2*[crit %])/(1+c3*[haste %])*(1+c4*[hit %])
One feature I would like to see is an optional user-supplied evaluation function per rating profile. Pawn could provide a text input field, loadstring() it, and use that function when comparing two items. The function would take the gear stats as input, and output a number. When comparing two items A and B, Pawn would build outfits using both items, compute the total stats for both outfits, then display the difference rating(stats_A)-rating(stats_B).

Another suggestion: Let's say Pawn stumbles upon something in the tooltip it can't handle, like an on-use effect. I'd like to be able to convert this into something Pawn knows.
For example I'd like to make Pawn treat "Use: Increases spell power by 346 for 20 sec. (2 Min Cooldown)" as if it were 346*20/120 = 57 spell power. No fancy stuff required like parsing the string. I just want to specify a number and a unit (spell power in this case) if the string is an exact match. (And have it saved in a SavedVar.)

Pawn 1.1.5, just posted, lets feral druids and deathknights value base armor and bonus armor separately if they so desire. I haven't done anything interesting with feral attack power in this version; if you want to use your scales on the 3.0.8 PTR you'll need to increase the value of your DPS stat, because feral attack power as an item stat doesn't exist anymore in 3.0.8.
