Noob Report Card

Version: 5.1.2
by: marshbum [More]

What is Noob Report Card

Noob Report Card is a tool that is geared to new players to World of Warcraft. It helps to remind new players of the various tasks that must be remembered as they begin to level their character. It is presented in a scorecard fashion with colors and on the fly update ability so the player can learn how actions they take affect their score (positive and negative).

Features

* Information presented in a "score card" fashion using colors and fill bars to get a quick read on your progress, just like reading a report card
* Tracks whether you are visting your class trainer after gaining new levels and learning new spells and abilities
* Tracks your equipment status, both durability rating and overall rating of how you are equiped (item level, quality, etc). Scoring gets harder as you change levels to represent the need to get better equipment
* Tracks your progress of professions relative to your level. Helps to ensure production and gathering professions are matched and that you are increasing your skill at a pace relative to your characters level
* Provides help text for each item that is tracked on the score card via Left Click on the status bars
* Provides detailed scoring data screens for weapons and equipment via Right Click on the appropriate status bars. This will aid in understanding how the final score is calculated. Detailed screens include Tool Tips for additional information.
* Minimap button that is used to open and close the report card, and changes it's appearance to remind you that your score has changed in some way and you need to review your scores.

Slash Commands

Typing one of the following will bring up the report card:
'/nrc' or '/noobreportcard'

Typing the following will reset the "Need to Train" flag (in case things get out of sync):
'/nrc reset'

Additional Info

Feedback can be sent to [email protected].

Version 5.1.2
*Updated for patch 4.3

Version 5.1.1
*Updated for patch 4.2

Version 5.1
*Updated for patch 4.1

Version 5.0.1
* Small bug fix for professions. Some combination of professions (like Inscription and Herbalism) were not reporting the correct skill level in Noob Report.

Version 5.0
* Changed the logic on identifying when class training is needed. No longer is based on the character's level. Noob report now scans your spellbook to know when spells need to be trained. This was a major upgrade that was needed with the release of Catacylsm.

* Changed the color coding of the status bars in Noob report so that a "black background" is used for areas that are not of concern yet. This will help you to stay focused on the bars that have a "green", "yellow" or "red" color to know how to change your score.

* Made several tweaks to the scoring system of Noob report to help players feel better about their score while working in their starting zones:
-- Tweaked the equipment quality score to make it easier to get to the max score while still in the starting zone
-- Professions are not calculated as part of your "score" now till your character is level 7
-- The max profession skill rate is now "Character level - 4 * 5". Will help to keep you from being discouraged about a low Noob Report score while skilling up your profession.

* All Noob Report status bars now allow a "right click". This way people don't think something is broken with the addon

Version 4.1.1
* Fixed an error with First Aid training
* Minimap button now opens AND closes the Noob Report panel (srry that should have been then when I added that button!)
* Increases the maximum points for professions to 525 in anticipation of Cataclysm

Version 4.1
* Added new feature of providing detailed scoring data for weapons and equipment via Right Click on the appropriate status bars.
* Updated various help text screens

Version 4.0
* Updated for support on patch 4.0.1

Version 3.1.2:
* Fixed bug with minimap icon changing at wrong times
* Added a msg to slash command to allow reset of training flag in case it gets out of sync. Type "/nrc reset"

Version 3.1:
* Updated help text to be clearer
* Changed the criteria for showing GREEN on the bars. Now only goes to GREEN when at 100%. Will make it easier to know what to focus on
* Modified help text scroll bar to always start at the top of the text

Repackaged the .zip file so that everything is already in the folder strucutre "Nrc".

Feature Suggestions

Drokk, thanks for the excellent feedback.

I am cataloging all the ideas I get on the comments here to see what I can do to keep Noob Report not just functional, but useful for the community.

I am glad to hear that even vets of the game are finding it usefull to some extent.

Trying to work on a schedule for the next round of upgrades.

Thanks

Minimap also

I know the below poster already mentioned this, but remember that some of us use a custom mini-map (Chinchilla in my case) and it may not even be round. So you need to add these options.

Hide mini-map button
Move mini-map button (rotation and radius)

Other than the mini-map button the only suggestion I have to improve this, and get more interest is to sharpen up the look.

Perhaps a transparent set of bars along the lines of Reputation Bars that will pop up when your grade changes for better or worse?

Separate the wall of help text to a pop up window as needed by having a little "?" button next to each bar?

It's a nice idea this even as a reminder for us vets of the game. Looking forward to more updates.

Version 5.0 Has Been Posted

I finally got the changes completed to accurately know when you need to train new spells. I also made several modifications in the scoring calculations so that players in the starting zones do not get discouraged early. The report card will now help you focus on the right things from levels 1 to 7, then 7 to 10, then above 10.

I did a bunch of testing but I am sure I have missed something. If you see anything, please let me know either via this web site or directly to my e-mail address listed in the description of the addon.

Thanks everyone for being patient with me on this very needed change!

Mining is the same. A level 50 character needs 250 (245 to be exact) mining skill to mine small thorium, the veins found mostly in low level 50 zones. At 5 points per level, a level 50 character should have 250 mining skill on the dot.

Loving this addon.
I choose "6 points per level" initially to keep people working hard since professions tend to get behind a lot with beginners. But you are right in that 5 per level would be a better rate for what can be made at various levels. Also, some feedback has been that "6 per level" is too ambitous and peopel get discouraged. I will incorporate this change in the next revision.

Thanks for the feedback and glad you like the addon.

(from the author) Training Changes

I relaize that the release of Cataclysm has changed when characters need to train. Right now, Noob Report is showing you have to train on "even" levels and that is not correct anymore. I am working on a fix for that as we speak.

In the meantime, you can use the slash command "/nrc reset" to reset the "need to train" indicator if it bothers you.

Stay tuned.

Awesome...

This will help when I am introducing new people to the game. If you're looking for feature suggestions... If I could whisper my friend to open this on their screen out of combat, or get whisper reports of their scores, I'd install this myself now just to familiarize myself with the score-sheet.

Finding out that a friend had been going back to Stormwind to train, even if he was in Iron Forge or Darnassus on his human priest was astonishing. If I could get updates from my noob friends without interfering with their WoW experience, other than to tell them the best spot to go to raise their collecting profession if they want to, or something like that, would be fantastic.

As is, I'll just have them install this and talk to me about it. Cheers!

Good Feedback

Ok so I tried the addon, works pretty good so far. The only two things I noticed is that it seems like the training warning gets reset when I change zones through loading, like going from Eastern Kingdom to Kalimdor, tellimg me that I need to go train when I've already done it already.

Other thing is for Skinning, the addon tells me I need to go buy a skinning knife, but I can already skin with my Gnomish Army Knife. Maybe it doesn't detect every items that can skin?

Other than that every thing seems to work perfectly fine!
Thanks for the feedback. I have also noticed the icon changing at times that surprises me, so I will look into that. On the professions, the addon is not checking to see if you have the skinning knife or pick axe yet, it's just a reminder. But good comment, I will look for those items in you bags, including the Army Knife, and remove that note if you already have the item.

Also, make sur eyou ahve version 3.1 since I made a few tweaks in that version.

Thanks again for the comments.

On the zip file structure, sorry about how it was packaged. First time uploading an addon. I will do better with the next release.

On the leveling and sending to trainer, it only indicates the need every other level. I focused on the levels 1-60 so it does not change after that. Figured by level 60 you got it down pat

Thanks
haha, so true, but there's also a lot of people who just never learn and are even a noob at lvl 80 Just glad for them that the spell ranks on the action bars get updated once you learn a new one :P

anyhow, great addon
