NPCScan  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 8.0.1.13
by: Torhal [More]

NPCScan helps you find NPCs by scanning nameplates, minimap vignettes, and mouseover targets, with an optional dynamic targeting keybinding. Once an NPC is found by one of these methods, an on screen alert is displayed and an audio alert is played.

Nameplates
Alerts will be triggered whenever a nameplate is created, if that nameplate belongs to one of the tracked NPCs. To use this feature with any reliability, the Interface->Names->Always Show Nameplates option must be turned on from the WoW Game Menu.

Dynamic Target Keybinding
NPCScan includes a key binding that will trigger a dynamically-generated targeting macro. Each time it is pressed, the key binding will trigger a /targetexact <mob name=""> for every tracked NPC in the current zone you are in, in addition to any custom NPC additions. This only attempts a search each time it is triggered; it is not a continuous search.

To access this feature, just set a keybind under the Key Bindings->AddOns->NPCScan->Targeting Macro section.

“Found” Alert
When an NPC is found, NPCScan alerts you by playing a loud and distinctive sound, making your screen pulse red, and displaying a Targeting Button for every NPC that is found.

Targeting Buttons
When clicked, the targeting button tries to target the NPC it depicts. You can also bind a key to trigger the newest button, in cases where multiple buttons are spawned.

Note: These buttons cannot be shown during combat. In the unlikely case that you do find a rare while fighting, the button or buttons will appear after you leave combat.

Options
NPCScan's main options window can be accessed from the Interface Options menu. To access the NPC list and other settings, type “/npcscan”.

New sounds can be added to the alert sound dropdown menu by installing SharedMedia.

  • 3.3.5.1:
    • Scans can now be limited to worlds (continents or instances). You can customize this for custom NPCs with an edit box next to the NPC's ID; Simply type the name of the world exactly, or select a continent name from the dropdown. If left blank, the scan will stay active no matter where you are.

    • Removed the rare raptors from default settings, since they no longer drop pets.
    • Removed the mostly obsolete “Search for Tamable NPCs” option.
    • Now uses ZoneIDs instead of map file names to locate tamable mobs. Consequently, The Razza now gets detected accurately in Dire Maul.

    • Added an “Unmute for alert sound” setting to play the alert sound even if WoW is muted.
    • Added an “Alert sound file” dropdown to choose which sound to play for alerts. Additional sounds can be added using SharedMedia-type addons.
    • The alert border flash now only shows when you enable “Screen Edge Flash” in the Default UI's Display Interface Options panel.
    • Now continues searching for rares in 5-man dungeons. Raid dungeons, battlegrounds, and arenas will still disable scanning, however.

    • Achievements to kill rares now have their own lists in the options window.
    • Added slash commands to add and remove NPCs from the custom tracking list: “/npcscan add <NpcID> <Name>” and “/npcscan remove <Name>
    • You can now add tamable mobs to your search list and toggle them all using a “Search for tamable NPCs” setting.
    • Found alerts for tamable mobs will note that they are tamable and may be false alarms.
    • Added an option to suppress the “already cached” log-in alert.
    • Added Gondria to the default rare list, and updated some rares that are now tamable in 3.1.

Re: NPCScanner: Issue with Frosbitten List

No he was not cached earlier because I cleared my cache beforehand and + this is the database that just lists them all not marks them.

Arcturis, Skoll, and Gondria do not show up on the list but Loque does.
Those three rares were added after Frostbitten, and aren't part of the achievement. I'm not sure why your custom list was empty, but it should have at least had the Time-Lost Proto Drake by default, and all three of those extra spirit beasts for hunters only.

Also, I cannot add a creatures ID into it, (when you type /npcscan and the 2 boxes come up for Creature ID, Place in the World, and Name box, the + and - are always greyed out even with correct information put into them.
As long as you fill in the NpcID and name, at least one of those buttons should have lit up. The World ID is optional. Did you accidentally put the NpcID in the World edit box? I just double checked those edit boxes and they seem to work alright for me.

Exclamation NPCScan and graphical issues

In the 4.0.0.2 release I was having graphical studdering in Dal. My framerate and latency were ok, but every step I took the textures that were passing by me lurched by in a jerking motion. I noticed If I hovered over the quest log the tool tip was flashing very rapidly, like around 30Hz. When I disabled _NPCScan it cleared up immediately. I see that you have released two versions since then but I did not see any related changes in the log, and I am assuming the issue is still there until I get a chance to update and load into WoW.

I'm not sure what would cause that, but if somehow _NPCScan was throwing lots of errors that might explain graphical stuttering. If you enable Lua errors and they're _NPCScan-related, could you post the first one you see here please?

The download should have included all of those parts in an "_NPCScan" folder, which you'll need to install by hand. Here's a guide by WoWInterface on where to place addon folders.

There is an easier alternative to that, though. Addons don't have any installer you can run, but WoWInterface has published a tool called MMOUI Minion that can do the installing for you. I haven't ever used it, but I think you just give it the addon's name and it finds and installs everything for you. It can even auto-update all your addons.

Hope that helps.

All three of the mobs in Sholazar are tamable, so be extra careful to clear them from your cache every time you go hunting for them. If you want _NPCScan.Overlay to show their paths even when _NPCScan isn't looking for them, you can enable the "Always show all paths" option in your "/overlay" menu.

I was just curious if there was a way to toggle npcscan off in Cities and BG's? Every day I have to clear my cache because Skoll or loque was "Found" but I've never seen them.. only the pet form. Seems like somewhat of a fix is to just turn it off in populated areas.

I've always had issues with this too. I forget to clear the cache before logging in and, when I do remember, it's a pain to drill down through the folders to delete that one file. Which is why I made a batch file to do it for me. A batch file is a plain text file that gives a series of commands to to your computer. All you have to do is open up any text editor (e.g. notepad) and put in:

c:
cd\
cd\World of Warcraft\Cache\WDB\enUS
del creatu~1.wdb

Then save it as "delcache.bat" (or whatever you want so long as it ends in .bat) to your desktop. "c:" should be whatever drive letter you have WoW installed to and "cd\World of Warcraft\Cache\WDB\enUS" should be whatever path you have WoW installed to.
What this does is tell it to go to the "C" drive, change directories to the root directory, change directories to the WoW cache directory where the file is located, and then deletes the file. The file name looks funny cause that's how it looks to DOS and this is using Windows' built in DOS emulator.
I added

cd\World of Warcraft\
launcher.exe

to mine so that it would delete the file and then immediately launch WoW.

WoW would cache pets in town even if you didn't have _NPCScan installed; It's part of how the game works, and I doubt we'll ever be able to turn it off. The best _NPCScan can do is simply hide the flashy alert buttons when in town.

that's an idea. I use Win7 so what would that be for the path
C:\Users\Public\Games\World of Warcraft\Cache\WDB\enUS?
with the launch thing and everything? I'd def use this for my hunter looking for her first spirit beast.

\Users\Public\Games\World of Warcraft\Cache\WDB\enUS is indeed the correct path for Windows 7. (My roommate uses Windows 7 so I looked on his pc.) So for win7 users the file would look like:

c:
cd\
cd\Users\Public\Games\World of Warcraft\Cache\WDB\enUS
del creatu~1.wdb
cd\Users\Public\Games\World of Warcraft
launcher.exe

I tested on my roommates pc and it worked fine.
Btw, if you do the launcher bit, it leaves the dos box open. You can ignore it or close it immediately. Doesn't matter as it just sits there doing nothing and will close when the launcher closes.

Question Sound in Background

I have music and ambient sounds checked off, and the rest of the soundoptions are checked on.

But can I hear the warning sound alt-tabbed ?

Since the flapping of my drakes wings stops whenever I alt-tab to desktop or forum I'm not sure and wanted to ask.

( I did check all the posts, sorry if I overlooked this question but I could not find it between the previous pages )

You'll first need to make sure "Sound in Background" is enabled in your sound options window, and then you have to set your "Display Mode" to either "Windowed" or "Windowed (Fullscreen)" in your video options. Those two options should get things working.
