Raid icons  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 3
by: hankthetank [More]

My custom raid icons for replacement of the original ones as seen in oUF_Hank, Tukui, ElvUi and on CNN.

For addon developers

Photoshop document + ready to use WoW texture (64x64px, 4 columns, 2 rows).

Feel free to use them in your projects. Giving credits would be nice though.

For end users

You can replace the normal ingame icons with this icon pack by following these simple steps:

  • Create this subfolder:
    Code:
    ...\World of Warcraft\Interface\TARGETINGFRAME\
  • Extract UI-RaidTargetingIcons.blp to this folder
  • Restart WoW

This will overwrite the standard icons in UI elements like unit frames or raid icon context menus. To replace the actual icons above players in the 3d environment it would be necessary to pack this into a mpq file but since this is a bit frowned upon here I'm not gonna dig into that further.

Wonderful!

They look great!

Is there a way to make them be the icons that actually appear above the targets? Mine don't seem to be.

Quote from front page:

The actual raid icons above players heads in the 3d environment are protected though and cannot be replaced. WoW will always load the blp textures from the data files in that case.

I eventually found a way to do this using the same method that people do for model changes. Please download the new version and follow the updated instructions on the front page.

So basically the mod isn't allowed just like modelchanging isn't? Not that I really care tho, but I guess people would want to know if they can safely use it or not.

I love the textures tho, might use em myself for the lulz.

I can't give you any official answer here but the policy reads as follows:

Malicious UI Modifications

We definitely want people to create their own UIs utilizing custom menu configurations, graphics, and even sounds. Anything that can be coded to modify the style and the look of the UI is fair game, as long as the modifications are done to the sanctioned internal files of the game. However, anything done to the UI to gain any sort of an unfair advantage over other players is unacceptable. If a player is found to have modified a UI so that they gain an unfair advantage in the game over others, he/she may...
- Do we use third party software? No, it's a blizzard mpq "internal file".
- Do we gain any unfair advantage here? Uhm... no?
- Is a mpq file a sanctioned file? idk

The thing is that model changes used to require an extra "launcher" if you will to load custom mpqs. And it was possible to replace camping fires with stairways for example. So do I believe this is a whole different story? Yes.

Good enough for me. Was merely meant as a question tho. I know that at a certain time Blizzard didn't allow any of the data files to be changed. I once made a sticky on the WoW EU forums about modelchanging being illegal.

But it seems they changed the policy a bit, and according to the rules you posted this should be fine.

Again, no harm was meant. Just don't want people to get banned over something stupid.

You may wanna check out Cairenn's response to a Custom Cursor guide on these forums. This information was received directly from Blizzard regarding MPQs, rather than Interface folder drop-ins.

AddOn has been placed on Hold and the author has been PMed. If the author (hankthetank) reads this, please check your PMs.

In essence, user created MPQ files of any kind are not allowed. This comes from Blizzard via Cairenn who has contacted Blizzard regarding similar issues.

The details from Cairenn's front page News post posted 24 Feb 2010:

<Snip -Z>

The second concerned a post telling people how to create and import custom mouse cursors into WoW. In talking to Blizzard about it, they said that MPQs are part of their proprietary software and as such are not to be altered or "faked" in any way (including creating your own "new" ones) [my emphasis -Z] . They fall under the following sections of the EULA and ToU:

From the EULA:

2. Additional License Limitations.
The license granted to you in Section 1 is subject to the limitations set forth in Sections 1 and 2 (collectively, the "License Limitations"). Well well... I removed the mpq from the newest release. It contains a blp texture file though. Since i cannot find any blue post that "expressly authorizes" the use of this "proprietary format" I don't know if this is ok now. But then again we would have to ban half of all addons on this page for doing so. If you want to pack this file into a mpq using the original game path for replacement of overhead icons I guess I can't stop you.

Usage of .blp graphic overrides via the Interface folder is legit and open to players. If Blizzard feels otherwise, they simply remove the ability to override that particular UI element. BLPs are fair game for players to use in AddOns or as Interface overrides provided they are not packed inside user created MPQ files.
