WowLens - Player Rating

Version: 2.0003
by: Pharaunmizz [More]

Home Page

This Addon works better with our Uploader!

WowLens is an addon for World of Warcraft that allows you to rate other players on four dimensions:

  • Overall quality
  • Friendliness
  • Skill in playing the game
  • Reliability

The average ratings from you and other players are displayed back to you in tooltips, chat, and a specialized view frame and are shared with other players who use the addon. If you have friends or contacts in game who are using the same addon, WowLens can sync your ratings with theirs to see data on players you haven’t even come across yet. You might know what’s up with that PUG member BEFORE you start a long party with them!
<p>Finally, WowLens also provides an (open source) executable to upload data to a centralized server, and download the latest data set - get all the data uploaded by anyone on your server, without having to deal with in-game syncronization.

WowLens is maintained by researchers at the University of Minnesota, Carnegie Mellon University, and the University of Pittsburgh as part of a National Science Foundation supported research project.

Very neat idea for a study - I hope that at least some of your research results will be published to the public, as I am very interested in seeing how it turns out!

Both my fiance and I downloaded and installed the addon, and are using it religiously!

My only problem with it so far is that the text string after names in the chat log is so incredibly long. I would love to be able to shorten that or disable it entirely. For those of us that use this mod on a daily basis, I think a string as simple as 7/6/8/6 after someone's name would be descriptive enough, instead of including the abbreviated stat name, and then the score out of total score.

I am not certain if you are looking to change or improve the mod at all - it it working just perfectly fine as far as I can tell, and coming from someone who runs somewhere around 200 addons, I can tell you that it has no compatibility issues (even with a heavily modified tooltip, chat window, and unit frames). However, I would love to see a huge population using this mod and increasing the size of the database, and I think that by making minor improvements (such as adding the option to shorten or disable the post-name chat string), it would be a bit more appealing, especially to people with heavily modified UIs built to suit personal aesthetics =)

I do miss some of the functionality from Karma, but it is definitely a nice change of pace to have a simpler mod that forces me to rate a person - otherwise, I personally just get lazy and don't rate anyone who isn't amazing or terrible, and the extra functionality just ends up being wasted anyway. I would LOVE to see the ability to write private notes.

All in all, I love the idea of this mod and your research, and I wish you all the best of luck!

Thanks! Yea I was really pushing to get a straight 1/6/2/5 display for chat ratings, but some people here were worried it would be too ambiguous. It's really good to see that people can catch on that quickly

I personally won't be a decider on how public the research is, but I think it should be safe to say that results will be made public.

I would like to make the chat notifications either just numbers (1/2/3/4), or at least toggleable - though I will have to ask the research gurus if that would be acceptable. At the very least, when the initial study is done I will be releasing a newer version.

Critical mass for a database would be awesome.

Hello again!

I am noticing that whenever I have someone in my group with a special character in their name, when I get the popup to rate them, their name shows up as "No Target" and they are unrateable. Just got out of a group with someone named Shar, with an umlaut over the a, and was unable to rate her.

Thanks!

Ohhhh man I wonder if I missed umlaut-a. We have a whitelist of allowable characters for rating (for data transfer purposes, this protects users from overwriting data & such with fake names containing control characters). Let me go check that.

Ok so v2.0000's special character list should get at least umlaut-a:

Standard a-zA-Z + áÁàÀâÂäÄåÅæÆßçÇœŒÐðéÉèÈêÊëËíÍìÌîÎïÏñÑóÓòÒôÔöÖøØúÚùÙûÛÜýÝÿ

There might be something else going on. I'll try to recreate the error.

So I can't recreate this with a character named Shär, so I'm thinking something else is up. (Or else there's another a-umlaut maybe?)

If you're very curious, you can manually turn on debug mode like so:

/run WowLens:EnableDebug(true)

/run WowLens:EnableDebug(false) to turn it off

Well, I'll be running a ton more instances today I'm sure, so I'll keep an eye out for more umlauts

I'll give the debug mode a go and see if I can find anything useful for you - I'd like to help any way I can!

I misread Shar's name! It actually has a tilde over the A, not an umlaut :] Looked over my logs from last night, and I guess I was a little more sleepy than I thought... hehehe

Arrg there's a tilde-a character?

Going through the whole list of high ascii again >.< Sure enough, I missed it.

I'll try to push out a version with that fixed in the near future.

Updated v2.0001 for that bug fix, available on http://wowlens.cs.umn.edu/download now, pushing it to Curse / WowI atm.

I just noticed that after I've been in a party, and I'm going to rate the players,
it says that they are all on my server. Not the server they actually are on.
But that might be some error with EU\US servers, or doesnt it work cross-realm? I'm on EU English btw.

Ah I must apologize, I haven't done any EU localization at all. The addon doesn't work for cross-realm in EU at all

That's on the list of things to do. enEU is actually a problem, because your BGs have the same names, and the API lies: GetLocale() returns "enUS" even if you're on an English-speaking European server. Fun fun fun

And a cleaner fix is incoming in the next release, along with support for French & Russian servers.
