Have you ever been in a group and had someone randomly drop dead? Have you ever asked that person what killed them, only to get a response of "uhhh" or "RNG man" back? If you want to know the real story behind the death, then Obituary is the mod that you want.
The goal of the mod is to notify you instantly when someone dies, and tell you what exactly killed them. You can choose to see only a quick summary of a death, and/or a full detailed report. The detailed report gives you enough information that the mod is also useful for post-wipe analysis.
The summary report will show some quick info about the death, such as:
Timewasted was killed by RandomMob1 (melee swing for X, [Bad Spell] for Y), RandomMob2 (melee swing for Z)
The detailed report goes a bit deeper than the summary report. It will show you damage, heals, and timestamps relative to time of death. In order to minimize the amount of spam generated during combat, it will print a short chat link. When you click on that chat link, the detailed report will be displayed inside a tooltip for you. If you want to show that report to the rest of the raid, all you have to do is shift+click the link.
The mod lets you control what types of deaths are shown, and under what circumstances. You can display deaths for players, pets, and NPCs. You can display them in the open world, battlegrounds, arenas, party and raid instances.
Current known issue(s):
None.
New in version 1.0.3:
Replaced tracking "Players" deaths with "Players in group" and "Players not in group". Previously "Players" only allowed tracking for players that were in your group.
Added an option to purge stored detailed report information. Doing this will render all current Obituary chat links inactive, but will free up the memory used to store the report information.
Added tracking for damage that was resisted/blocked/absorbed. Currently this information is only displayed in detailed reports.
Made summary reports automatically split into multiple messages when needed. It will only split messages when the output is non-local (sending to party, raid, etc).
Added an error message when clicking on an Obituary chat link when you have no information stored for that death. Previously it would just silently fail, but now with the option to purge stored information, it will tell you that there's nothing available to display.
General memory management cleanups. Older versions were terrible at allowing unused memory to be garage collected.
Optional Files - Obituary
Sorry, there are currently no optional files available.
Any chance of putting in 'Yell' and "raid warning" as default channels?
I'm kinda the death tracker in my guild and this would help greatly to keep me from having to switch back and forth between party and raid defaults depending on which type of instance I'm in.
In the meantime I'm pretty sure I've figured out how to manually put them into the .lua.
I've been a bit busy with other things lately, so haven't been following this too much.
Yes, it's possible to output to any chat tab that the mod thinks isn't a combat log. /obit config, Reporting --> Summary Report or Detailed Report --> Chat Frame. If you have multiple chat tabs and it's still only listing General, then that's something I'd need to try to fix.
As for the report spamming... meh. I agree that the spam can be incredibly annoying from time to time, but I was never really happy with any of the throttling ideas that I could come up with. I finally ended up just adding the detailed reports and accepting that I'd get 10-25 lines of spam on every wipe.
Also, I'm no longer playing WoW any more, so updates that aren't simple bug fixes are somewhat difficult. I have a friend that said he doesn't mind being a guinea pig for my completely untested updates, but it's not an ideal situation for me.
One feature this addon lacks is throttling in the case of a forced wipe. If there are more than 6 deaths within 10 seconds, pause public channel output. This allows it to be useful to use to report to /raid or /o chat without spamming them.

BA is a bit unique in that it removes a percentage of a player's maximum health, and I have absolutely no idea what combat event would be used for a mechanic like this.
None.
As far as I know it's a server-side script which isn't reported to the combat log. aka: You're out of luck. :X

I have a new version that is hopefully nearing the end of the beta cycle which, among other things, will improve memory usage. Providing no ugly bugs pop up, I hope to have the new version out in a day or two.
Also, I'm looking for a combat log for Vaelastrasz in Blackwing Lair. I've been told that Obituary doesn't handle death by Burning Adrenaline. BA is a bit unique in that it removes a percentage of a player's maximum health, and I have absolutely no idea what combat event would be used for a mechanic like this.
