Summary
BetterTooltips is a lightweight attempt to add some really useful information to the standard Blizzard in-game tooltips, and was inspired by Blizzard's own in-game Game Menu Microbutton tooltip (the one with your latency, framerate, etc).
Coming in 2.0, by request:
An interface GUI, including options to toggle the gryphon hide feature and to hide extended popups during combat!!!
Look for the 2.0 update no later than January 1st, 2013, thank you for your suggestions, and thanks for using BetterToolTips!

Yes, you have a significant part in all this, too. While I really love the idea of retiring on micropayments and donations from writing addons, what I really want is your feedback. Bugs, comments, critiques, and suggestions. Keep 'em coming - anything I can do to make this addon better, let me know! It'll help me learn LUA programming and the WoW API better, and it'll get you a better addon!

Features
BetterTooltips adds the following tooltip info:
- Main Menu Bar - Dragon Hider - When you first log on to a character, BetterTooltips will clear a little screen real estate for you by hiding those pesky Blizzard dragons that bookend the Main Menu Bar.
- Social (O) Tooltip - The Social tooltip will now display the number of friends you have online, as well as the level (difficulty color coded), name (class color coded), and location (zone) of each of your friends. This list is split into Battle.net friends and local server friends (Note that Battle.net friends will show up in both lists, but will only be counted in the total number of friends online once).
- Character Info (C) Tooltip - The Character tooltip will have three new sections added to it, including a color-coded/aggerate-averaged durability percentage, your current money in gold/silver/copper, and your current tracked currencies with icon, name, and amount.
- Spellbook & Abilities (P) Tooltip - The Spellbook & Abilities tooltip now gives a summary of your professions, including both primary and all secondary professions, as well as your progress (skill points/maximum) in each.
- Guild (J) Tooltip - The Guild tooltip will now display the name of your guild and how many guildies are online, as well as the level (difficulty color coded), name (class color coded), and location (zone) of each of your guilds. NOTE: Currently working to fix a bug with the guild tooltip throwing an error prior to joining a guild, or prior to choosing a faction for Pandarens.

Before I even loaded it...
I came in here to ask if the bookend removal was a toggle-able feature, as I *use* that space for other things (a couple of addons that have a small display, like Speedy Gonzales, fits perfectly there - out of the way, and really obvious when I look for it). Add another voice for the 'please make it optional!'

The sales pitch given by the Pick of the Week got me interested in your addon, and the fact that it will display all online guildies/friends on mouseover is something I've been missing dearly ever since AuldLangSyne was abandoned (and I refuse to use brokers and similar ugly bars). However, the fact that you will also hide my gryphons, without giving me the option to toggle it, is a turn-off for me. I ticked this addon as favourite nonetheless, and will check back in a while - if you make the gryphon thing optional, then I'll instantly use this addon!

Removal of Gryphons
Just as sort of a suggestion.. I wouldn't remove the gryphons on the players bar; some people (like me) don't like having them removed.. I, thankfully know how to edit that out.. but others might not and could easily be the difference between someone using this or not! Otherwise, great add-on! I use it
