About Atlas

Atlas is an addon for World of Warcraft that includes detailed maps for every instance in the game. Originally, Blizzard neglected to include maps for instances. However, after a number of years Blizzard began to include official maps for some instances. These official maps are in the same hand-drawn style as the built-in world maps. Conversely, the Atlas maps are based on data used by the minimap, which provides a more detailed, accurate, and colorful representation. You can think of this as the difference between a street map and a satellite image.

The core of Atlas is basically an image viewer. However, it's the images that come with Atlas that make it worthwhile - a map for every instance in the game. Furthermore, while the built-in maps mark the locations of some major bosses, Atlas provides detailed and accurate information about all of the creatures, NPCs, objects, and events you'll encounter in each dungeon. General information about each zone is provided as well, including its location, level range, player limit, attenuation requirement, and associated faction. All entrances, exits, portals, and connections are labelled clearly. Because there are so many instances in the game, you can categorize them by type, level, number of players, continent, or expansion.

With Atlas installed and enabled, you will be able to view the instance maps every where, even you are not inside the instance.

After installing Atlas, you'll notice a new icon on the minimap that looks like part of a little globe (you can right-click the icon to drag it around the minimap's frame). Click this icon to open up the main Atlas window, which displays the maps and legend. You can alternatively use the slash-command "/atlas". The drop-downs at the top of the window enable you to navigate between the maps. You can also drag the Atlas window around the screen. Lock it in place with the little lock button in the upper-right corner.

At the bottom of the legend is a small text-entry field as well as Search and Reset buttons. Type part of a word or name in the box and click the Search button, and the legend's entries are reduced to only those that match your text. Note that the search is performed only on the entries for the current map, not all the entries in the database. While not so useful for instances with only a few entries like Ragefire Chasm, the search comes in handy when there are a ton of entries, like for Blackrock Depths or the AtlasMajorCities plug-in. If you want to get the whole list back, just click Reset.

Atlas also includes maps of scenarios, battlegrounds, dungeon locations, flight points, and outdoor raid bosses.

Before Installing
  • Any previous versions of Atlas including Atlas' built-in plugins must be deleted prior to installation.
  • Atlas plugins (AtlasLoot, AtlasQuest, etc.) designed for any version of Atlas prior to this one may need to be deleted as they may not be compatible.

How to Install

Configuration

Atlas has a few simple options, accessible from the Options button in the upper-right corner of the main window, or with the slash-command /atlas options. A few of the settings aren't very self-explanatory so here's some more information about them.
  • "Auto-Select Instance Map" detects the instance that you're in when you open Atlas, and then automatically switches to the appropriate map. This feature doesn't work in instances that have more than one map, like Blackrock Spire, Dire Maul, or many of the Outland instances. In this case, Atlas remembers the last map you had open.
  • "Right-Click for World Map" makes the World Map open when you right-click anywhere on the Atlas window. This is useful when you want to quickly switch from Atlas to the World Map.
  • "Clamp Window to Screen" makes it so that you can't drag the Atlas window off the edge of the screen. The rest of the options are pretty straightforward. The Reset Position button is useful if the Atlas window ever gets dragged completely off-screen and you can't get it back.

Modules and Plugins

Due to the total size of our addon is increasing bigger and bigger since we are having more and more maps, we have heard many users complaining about the download issue, and suggested us to find some workaround.
We have discussed internally our final decision is to separate our built-in plugins into individual addon packages (also individual addon projects).

Also, we have moved out the old dungeon maps and re-categorized them based on the expansion set. For example, Burning Crusade dungeon maps are now only available in another addon package.

This provide the flexibility of addon downloading. Users who don't need any specific plugin or expansion dungeon maps can decide not to download them. Or, those plugins and old dungeon maps won't get frequently updated, therefore, users who have download all the Atlas addon packages don't need to download all the packages each time when there is a new release.

Links to All Addon Packages

3rd Parties Atlas Plugins

Atlas has a built-in plugin system allowing for the easy addition of map packs. In fact, Atlas ships with four of these plugins (for battlegrounds, dungeon locations, flight points, and outdoor raid bosses). If you're interested in making your own Atlas map pack, I suggest you start with one of these four as a guide. You can contact me or post on the Atlas forums if you need help, however I suggest you do as much research as possible beforehand. Furthermore, there are several Atlas plugins that do more than simply provide additional maps.
  • AtlasLoot provides a loot table for each boss
  • AtlasQuest displays the quests associated with each instance.
  • AtlasMajorCities displays each major cities and all the NPCs, merchants, vendors, trainers info.
  • Atlas World Events - provide maps and quests information for WoW World Events. Maintained by Arith, not part of Atlas team's work.
  • Atlas Arenas - provide arenas maps. Maintained by Arith, not part of Atlas team's work.

As of 10/15/15 (patch 6.02 pre-WOD) Atlas is throwing too many errors so has been disabled. Surprised there is no update? Atlas is a STAPLE addon and ICLWI!!!

Thanks in advance!

Wow, good to know the problem is resolved.
I wasn't using quite much addons, so I never thought of it could be affected by other addon.
I think this is a good lesson learned.

Yes, all 4 of the suspect plugins/modules are showing in the game client's addons list and are checked.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Get

Sorry I should ask the question more clearly.
I meant to ask what's your game client's language. Sometimes the problem might appear in some specific language. As the development and testing usually is done in English locale, sometimes we are not able to detect the possible issue in other languages.

But anyway, I didn't get similar issue reported from other users.

AnrDaemon is trying to say the ZIP file name doesn't tell everything.

The main point is what's the folder looks like after you extract those zips. For example, is the Atlas_Battlegrounds_v1.25.01.zip being extracted like
World of Warcraft\Interface\AddOns\Atlas_Battlegrounds\
And you are able to find the TOC like
World of Warcraft\Interface\AddOns\Atlas_Battlegrounds\Atlas_Battlegrounds.toc

Also one question, are you able to see those plugins/modules showing in the game client's addons list?

Also, zip file names do not tell, what addon versions are installed in your WoW client. WoW can't read addons from Zip files. Yet.
Please install Swatter or other similar addon, and run the command
Code:
/run foo(
while ingame, then post the resulting backtrace here.
Well, I was typing in English so that would be the assumption ;-p, I wasn't being facetious, I just didn't know what you were asking for. I'm not even sure how I would choose a different language (default seems to be English, or does the addon choose the language based on server or login area?) I'm on the US server 'Lothar' in eastern Canada (EST time zone).

As for the ZIP files not showing the version, is the number in the name of the zip itself not the version of the addon?

i.e. for Atlas_Battlegrounds_v1.25.01.zip isn't v.1.25.01 the actual version of that addon? If not, then I wouldn't have given you a list of the zips, but that's what I thought that version number in the name was.

In any event here is the info you requested from the /run foo( command (I had swatter installed already from the Auctioneer addon, just had to enable it). If you want ALL the results of the backtrace let me know and I'll post it, but I pulled out just the version information it showed to make it easier to read through here:

AddOns:

Atlas, v1.25.00
AtlasArena, v1.4.02
AtlasBurningCrusade, v1.25.00
AtlasCataclysm, v1.25.00
AtlasClassicWoW, v1.25.00
AtlasScenarios, v1.25.01
AtlasWorldEvents, v3.03
AtlasWrathoftheLichKing, v1.25.00
AtlasMajorCities, vv1.5.3
AtlasMajorCitiesEnhanced, vv1.01
AtlasQuest, v4.8.4

---

Strangely, the results from foo isn't showing the 4 addons/plugins that show up in the error message window as well, but I did unzip the zip files into the 'World of Warcraft\Interface\AddOns' directory along with the ones it does show. Why would Atlas not be picking up those 4 specific ones when they are in the addons directory?

I manually looked in the TOC files for each of the 4 suspect addons and see this information for each (these versions coincide with the ones that were in the zip file names too):

Atlas_Battlegrounds:
Version: 1.25.01

Atlas_DungeonLocs:
Version: 1.25.00

Atlas_OutdoorRaids:
Version: 1.25.00

Atlas_Transportation:
Version: 1.25.01

Thanks for your valuable comment. Every comment is welcome.
Although I do think our addon info looks quite clear, I have made some minor revision.

Basically the info answered most of your questions. Atlas addon is just an image viewer. This viewer can let you view the pre-made images, so we made dungeon maps, battleground maps, scenario maps, flight point maps, etc. All these pre-made map images are static, as they are pre-made, not dynamically generated.
So since it's an image viewer, you shouldn't expect it provide those fancy features like "Go To", "Way Points", etc.

I would suggest you go for a quick try, that's the best way you will know if this is the addon you want.
WoW addons are all free and created by volunteers, we didn't ask for any money return, so it's almost no harm to install it even it turns out this is not what you want. Also, WoWInterface has a very good addon validation, there is no any addon hosted here which turns out to be harmful.

It's up to you.

I still dont know how much memory Atlas uses when running.
That's because addon memory usage is an insignificant and meaningless measure.

I still dont know how much additional memory would be used per map-module (on average), or how much would be used if I had them all loaded at once.
None. Map modules are just texture packages... yeah, with maps.

I still dont know if Atlas offers features like "Goto location" (ike Carbonite).
Atlas is just an... atlas. NOT a map addon, NOT a GPS navigator, NOT... many things. It's just an atlas. A collection of maps with notes.

I still dont know if Atlas offer "way points" (like Tomtom).
See above.

...and I still dont have a clear picture as to how Atlas handles things like Quests, Quest Givers, Quest Zones, Gathering (herbs, mining), NPCs, Enemy faction.
How Atlas can handle them?... Go figure.

These (and other) points are very important to users and I would hope that they would be touched on in the add-on introduction and list of features.
The addon introduction is rather clear, and cover addon features nearly precisely. If you didn't took the time to read it, however...

I'm not trying to knock Atlas or anyone else here. What I am saying is that Im trying to make a decision based on information that has not been made available, and thats somewhat frustrating.
How about making decisions on available information?

I hope that the features and introduction can be updated to a more comprehensive and detailed description so that we are not faced with downloading and installing... then learning features by trial and error.
They already comprehinsive and cover every available feature and even provide usage instructions.

Considering the number of WoW add-ons, that is not the best approach.
Considering your inability to read, that's not the best way to ask questions.

Thanks.

Ill check back in a week or two and hopefully there is an updated introduction available.
I don't see it happening.

Maybe a little more clear info?

Hello,

I am considering an add-on to replace my current map add-on because it will not work in some battle grounds (leaving me blind) and doesnt always work in instances (leaving me blind).

When I came across Atlas I was intrigued because of the features.

Then I browsed the forum and found that most of the comments have to do with confusion over the download size and/or installation... and I also noticed that many of those comments were not clearly communicated or even in sentences.
Just partial ideas strung together in jumbled fashion.

But on the flip-side I found that the information presented by Atlas is often somewhat vague or incomplete.

The result? Of course this results in a mess.
A confusing mess which makes it tough for a potential new user to gain the information needed to make an intelligent download/install decision.

Considering the number of WoW add-ons, that is not the best approach.

Thanks.

Ill check back in a week or two and hopefully there is an updated introduction available.
